Now that the Cloud exposes lots of new features and technologies, how do you migrate your code and your knowledge? This class will review what you need to refresh your .NET expertise and get ready to leverage Autodesk Forge, Cloud connected apps and web-based apps.

AutoCAD Web (https://web.autocad.com) officially launched in March 2018. It’s the culmination of years of work to refactor and port the AutoCAD desktop code for the browser. As a result, AutoCAD Web shares all the C++ code that is responsible for the core, in-canvas drafting experiences with AutoCAD desktop. This includes the APIs, too. This talk is about the applications and extensions that you can build with AutoCAD Web, and our plans for the future.

The Reality Capture Group at Autodesk, Inc., is working on new ways to use laser scans or photos through the ReCap software technology to acquire, manipulate, and analyze real-world data. This class will focus on how to programmatically access the ReCap software web API (application programming interface) from a Microsoft .NET desktop application, and also how to access it from Android and iOS mobile apps. We will start with a quick overview of basic photogrammetry concepts and image parameters. We will follow with a brief introduction to REST-based web services, and we will explore how to authenticate with the Autodesk server using the OAuth protocol. We will then expose in detail the capabilities of the ReCap software web API and show you how to define a photo scene and create a dense 3D mesh from multiple pictures. We will also introduce the most effective practices to access and work with the API through examples in .NET, Android, and iOS apps.

A long-awaited design automation for Revit (DA4R) has finally arrived! Currently, DA4R is available to general public as a beta. Using DA4R, you can create, edit, and extract Revit models through the Revit API without having the Revit desktop environment. For example, you can create a model automatically by entering parameters, check if certain design criteria are met and create a report, and automatically modify the model. It is also possible to extract model data which was not possible with Forge Model Derivative API only. In this session, we will introduce DA4R to those who have experience writing Revit add-ins and are interested in learning Forge. You will learn how to convert your existing Revit add-ins to run in the cloud, and get started with leveraging Forge services (for example, integrating with viewer and BIM 360).

While companies try to adapt BIM 360 software to their projects and integrate with their existing workflow, one of the challenges is setting up projects in scale. While using a product’s web user interface may be enough for a few projects, tasks involved in setting up projects—such as adding users and building a standard folder structure with appropriate user permissions—can easily become time-consuming, tedious, error-prone manual labor. In this class, we will show you a tool that helps you set up projects in bulk by importing from CSV files. The tool consists of a collection of commands that you can run in combination. The features include: creating projects, populating users and company, setting up services, adding users to projects, and creating folders with user permissions. The tool is a desktop application written in .NET using Forge APIs. For those who wish to further customize the tool to integrate with their enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, we will share the source code and explain implementation detail.

This class will demonstrate how to explore the Dynamo API through Visual Studio and C#. Learn how to navigate the core libraries, understanding the difference between methods and properties within classes, and how to build simple commands. Much like the Revit API, understanding the application of the Dynamo API can open up further opportunities for future development. Finally, learn about some of the potential use cases of its application and see some real world examples of this.

AutoLISP is a very powerful programming language, but it doesn't offer the same knockout punch that VB.NET/C# does when combined with the AutoCAD .NET API. This class will explore the fundamentals of VB.NET and examine how you can use it to enhance existing AutoLISP routines. During this class, you will learn how to create basic commands for AutoCAD software, and discover functions that you can use with your existing AutoLISP routines. We will show examples of how to work with AutoCAD objects, get input from the user, create a basic form, and pass values between AutoLISP and .NET, plus other general programming concepts. For this class, you should know some AutoLISP, but it will be a beginner-level class for VB.NET and the AutoCAD .NET API.

This class will discuss using the 3ds Max software development kit (SDK) for automating common tasks within 3ds Max software. We will spend time discussing the .NET API and the Python environments, and we’ll compare them both. The Python SDK is using a newer API called MaxPlus, but it is not fully exposing the C++ API. While .NET API is exposing most of the C++ API, it can sometimes be more difficult to work with. We will compare them and show techniques for automating common tasks, and creating user interfaces to control your tools. This session features 3ds Max. AIA Approved

The Model Derivative API is not just meant for translating files to a viewing file format (the 'SVF' file ) and loading the model for viewing. In this class, we will provide you with deeper understanding of the Model Derivative API, it's feature set and capabilities. We will cover the range of file formats that are available for translation; how to extract metadata from a model; and how geometry can be extracted from model data for developing a variety of custom Forge applications. This will be followed by demonstrating a use case developed by one of our Forge customers. The class will show side by side samples of C# and Node.js.

Expand your horizons and learn to develop in Microsoft Visual Studio and Microsoft .NET. Most of us know how to customize in LISP, so as a way to ease into .NET, this class will focus on developing .NET functions that are exposed to LISP. Even if you are a LISP programmer who has been scared to make the jump—come on in, the water's fine. The topics covered in this class are also covered in the new forum called AUGI Bridging the Gap, so you will have a place to hang out afterward and craft your skills.

In this lecture, I’ll demonstrate how you can capitalize on this revolution using your existing .NET skills. This session features Forge. AIA Approved

This lab will explain the process of accessing Python inside of Dynamo, a powerful way to talk to the Revit API and allow for greater degrees of functionality that out-of-the-box Dynamo and community driven packages may lack. It will cover the core basics of the Python language such as syntax, what the IDE colours mean, how and when to indent (And what it means if you don't), what object types are and how to cast them to another type as well as covering looping? one of the most powerful features that Python has available. It will discuss the potential pitfalls that you run into when accessing Python from Dynamo such as data typologies and wrapping, before diving deeper into external resources: How to access the contents of an external .dll, how Dynamo specifically talks to external and internal resources, how we can retain a 'lightness of touch' by only importing targeted methods before looking at how we interaction with the Revit document through transactions and specific Dynamo casts. It will cover the limitations of the Python Node in Dynamo, such as list interaction and a lack of a real intellisense, before working through a couple of examples of Revit API calls that are not present in out-of-the-box Dynamo.

This class will introduce the Forge platform from the perspective of an early adopter – starting with business aspects, paradigm shift, cloud concepts, and the future of Autodesk cloud platform strategy. We will cover some of the technical challenges with web programming from the perspective of someone migrating from a desktop programming environment to the cloud, and discuss how to overcome them. We will then walk through some simple yet representative code samples helping you to get started with the Forge platform through the Viewer, Model Derivative API and Design Automation APIs. When we look back 10 years, we can easily identify how much we've learned and how much growth we've experienced. If only we knew 10 years ago what we know now, how much better would we be? This session hopes to provide the top lessons learned over the last 10 years of .NET development for AutoCAD software.

AutoCAD use grips showed with selected entity not only to provide visual hints of the entity, such start/end/center points, or mid/tangent points or vertices, but also more importantly provide shortcuts to various operations against the entity, such as stretch/move/rotation/scale. Other AutoCAD verticals (C3D/ARCH/MEP…) use custom grips with AEC entities extensively. Fortunately, with .NET API, we can add custom grip to AutoCAD entity for our own specialized operation against selected entity. This instruction shows a few practical examples of using custom grips.

This hands-on lab will be a beginner's introduction to the C# programming language and how this can be used with the Autodesk software APIs to develop custom tools. Using examples from the Revit and Navisworks APIs we will run through what an API is and how to use it. This will include how to set up and write the first lines of code, where to get references, and how Autodesk add-ins work, as well as providing some examples. This class will also introduce you to some additional resources you can use to develop your knowledge further.
