Revit software customization via the Revit API has continued to grow in popularity over the last several years. Because of the complexity of Revit software and the extensiveness of the Revit API, new Revit software add-in developers often run into similar problems and repeatedly ask questions of the customer support or on social media and forums. This course collects many of the most-frequently asked questions and most-likely encountered problems into a single presentation. In this lecture you will see common solutions to typical problems, discover often repeated Dos and Don’ts, and learn recommended approaches to developing and structuring Revit software add-ins. For each topic we will review the mistakes or roadblocks developers typically stumble upon and show the recommended solution while illustrating the answers with useful examples you can borrow from or modify. SOFiSTiK, a development partner of Autodesk, builds its structural analysis application upon Revit software, providing a workflow that's fully integrated in building information modeling (BIM), from modeling to design and detailing. Structural engineers can analyze buildings in Revit, allowing them to be in constant connection with the intelligent model. In seismic regions, everyday structural engineers have to deal with rigorous and time-consuming rebar detailing to comply with code requirements for seismic design and local rebar detailing standards. Historically, this task was done in 2D detailing software like AutoCAD software, but today the industry is based on the BIM (Building Information Modeling) environment, and it's necessary to create rebar elements inside the Revit model. This class will show you how this approach was accomplished, continuing with a class presented at Autodesk University 2017-“BLD124825-Automatic Rebar Detailing of Wall-Based Buildings Using Dynamo and ETABS.” At that time, development was done in Dynamo, but to reach the desired productivity, the solution was migrated 100% to the Revit API. For a while, MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) disciplines in general, and electrical in particular, have been somewhat behind architecture and structure disciplines when it comes to utilizing BIM (Building Information Modeling) capabilities; hence, electrical engineers usually used BIM software as a drafting tool while keeping the same old calculation sheets and process. The purpose of this class is to give a detailed approach on how electrical analysis and workflow can be embedded successfully in BIM software, to motivate MEP and electrical engineers to take the design process to the next levels—not just by the integration between analysis software, but by preparing a full workflow. The lecture will describe embedding electrical analysis using Revit software, Revit API, and simple database; following electrical design tasks such as feeder sizing and protection sizing; explaining how Revit is used as the main tool and central platform for the electrical design process; and also making the electrical and MEP engineers think of the next level.

Traditionally, firms have developed and deployed Revit Add-ins using C# to implement Automation, Integration, & Customizations and custom capabilities in Revit. Autodesk now offers the  Automation, Integration, & Customization API, part of the Autodesk Platform Service (APS), which provides access to the Automation, Integration, & Customization capabilities of Autodesk’s core products, including the Revit API. This session will assist developers in transitioning from the Revit API to the Automation, Integration, & Customization API. The Automation, Integration, & Customization API introduces a new workflow that allows developers to access the full Revit DB API without needing a Revit desktop installation. This enables seamless creation, extraction, and modification of Revit data. This workflow facilitates the creation of custom Revit families, data extraction, and more, without the need to open Revit models. We outline from start to finish how to convert a Revit Add-in to Design Automation, Integration, & Customization. This includes using Postman, managing References, Access Tokens, AppBundles, publishing, and running WorkItems.

Revit intelligent models provide great metrics and the tools to manage them for most standard customer needs. However, in some specific workflows (for example, estimating and construction planning), despite the precise physical model, using original elements and/or parts, some crucial and accurate metrics may not be available via standard parameters and tools. In this class, the presenter will share many such examples and Revit API solutions for each, gained throughout his extensive career in the Autodesk DevCon and Consulting Divisions. Most specifically, he will present some findings gained during the last 3 years of intensive collaboration with Vinci Construction, together with their BIM developers. Solutions and some sample code will be provided for areas from specific small tasks (more-precise material takeoff from layered walls, metrics for all parts, metrics for “gross” walls, and so on) to more-extensive solution frameworks, such as custom parameters development and management based on custom abstract API classes.

This technical instruction will demonstrate how to eliminate tedious manual duct takeoffs by developing a Revit add-in that automatically extracts duct information and calculates external static pressure. MEP engineers currently waste hours manually measuring ducts and entering data into spreadsheets for ESP calculations. The session will look at using the Revit API to capture duct parameters directly from the model, apply the same calculation logic as traditional spreadsheets, and integrate an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot to handle multiple Automation, Integration, & Customization tasks. Ever wanted to learn to use the Revit application programming interface? Programming in Revit software seems like a scary thing, but it doesn’t have to be. We will present on how to start using the Revit API using free tools. This class will guide attendees who use Revit but have never tried to access the API to accomplish simple tasks. Using element Filters, Transactions, and User Interface will be the main focus. This will give each attendee a basic understanding and road map to creating their own scripts for Revit. We will use the following software: Revit, RevitPythonShell, Revit Lookup, and pyRevit. Attendees will need basic understanding of Revit and entry-level understanding of Python.

Did you know you can get your keynote data from a database or your company wiki, or that you can share links across multiple users without complicated setups with mapped network drives? This class will teach Revit API users how to use the external resource service to manage linked models and other external data. You will learn how to easily create references to Revit software, DWG™ software, or Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) models that are provided by a Revit plug-in. This can give you more control over how to manage and control access to links. For example, in a work-shared environment, users with different machine setups can still access the same linked data. (Or not access it!) You will also learn how to customize your keynote data and avoid using a keynote file entirely if you wish. We'll also go over some tips and tricks for using links, including some enhancements made in Revit 2018 software.

Over the past few releases of Revit software, the API around Revit software structural elements and workflows has been significantly extended and augmented with additional capabilities such as structural code checking. These extensions enable developers and Building Information Modeling (BIM) experts to connect distinct tools (including loads and boundary condition preparation; structural analysis calculations; results analysis; code checking; and the creation, modification, and numbering of rebars) into a more interconnected workflow for structural engineers. This course will cover the use of Revit software structural tools and their corresponding APIs as a part of an overall BIM Solution for structural engineering calculations. It will include example workflows that developers may learn from and extend. We will illustrate simple concepts with code examples, and we will demonstrate live advanced techniques.
