“Design thinking” has become a common business term in recent years. You may have heard it on one of your teams, or from a designer, marketer, or engineer. As an industrial designer, I am often asked about it. Many people are not familiar with industrial design, but they know design thinking is part of what we do. This class will be a hands-on introduction to design thinking. I will center it on a team-based, timed design challenge. There will be a project brief and teams will be selected at random. First, we will benchmark the specific industry and establish a target audience to investigate the business direction. The main section of this workshop will be to develop and present a product pitch for a specific product. Part of this event will be the critique of ideas. Key to the successful implementation of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning is the development and implementation of innovative strategies that will support students in thinking across disciplines. This class highlights how the “design thinking” process, a methodology that has been successfully applied in business and multiple fields of design, can serve as a powerful tool for operationalizing STEAM learning in secondary education by promoting 21st-century skills related to creativity, critical analysis, collaboration, communication, and content mastery. The class will draw connections between design thinking and new research in the area of cognition and learning that challenge traditional educational policies and practices. Examples from the Digital STEAM workshop will be used to illustrate the potential of technology enhanced design thinking to support the successful integration of STEAM learning in secondary education.

The demand for medical devices is rapidly growing with a forecast of global annual sales to reach nearly US$800 billion by 2030. But a one-size-fits-all approach in surgery often results in major complications such as infection, delayed or incomplete healing, and revision surgeries that contribute to diminishing clinical outcomes. A new approach with design thinking is now necessary to help solve these challenges. Researchers at University of Birmingham, Autodesk, Manufacturing Technology Centre (UK), and the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust have developed a novel design framework to create personalized knee implants from a CT scan using generative design for treating arthritis. This class will showcase how generative design can be implemented in an all-encompassing digital workflow to explore customized devices and make a positive impact to improve patient outcomes. The team will also discuss the fabrication of functional prototypes using cutting-edge manufacturing, post-processing, and validation techniques.

Reducing energy use and carbon emissions from buildings is essential for solving the global climate crisis. Although the earth's atmosphere just exceeded the critical threshold of 400 ppm of carbon in the atmosphere, many of today's architects and engineers are not equipped to tackle this problem with sound building science and useful energy analysis. This is true for both graduating students and practicing professionals. In response to this need, the Autodesk education team, sustainability team, and product teams are working together to deliver a suite of educational programs. Hear from the people creating these programs and the people using them, and learn how they can help you, your classroom, and your firm.

Understanding building data and its application to design thinking requires seeing beyond analytical information. Placing simulation data—the analytics—requires placing the data within a context capable of informing designers, building collaboration with the design team, and educating project stakeholders. Capitalizing on virtual reality (VR) to visualize energy use, daylighting, solar radiation, wind, and relevant design options lets decisions be made with context and an understanding of cause and effect. This class will establish a strategic and replicable workflow methodology to build relevant building simulations (energy, sun, wind) in the design discovery phase, and visualize that data in a VR space with respect to multiple design strategies. Once in VR, the simulation data can then be used to educate the design team, clients, or students to help build an understanding of the role that analytics can play in forming design strategies.

This course will present a series of "how to" and "how come" case studies on using Forma to expand contextual understanding of architectural design. Where Revit excels at designing with the building envelop in, Forma excels at connecting building design to a broader context. Specifically, this is where working with Forma opens a new mode of architectural exploration with an emphasis on outcome-based design thinking. Forma allows the construction and analysis of a series of complex site-based issues: topography and existing conditions, environmental factors, infrastructure, and geographic data (GIS). This is then combined with multiple design proposals to study impact on energy, accessibility and circulation, embodied carbon, and the visceral connection between the building and site that can only be resolved through iterative, simulated explorations.

Urban slums are growing at a blistering pace. One billion people live in urban slums today, and 2 billion people will do so by 2030. These areas aren't getting bigger; they're just getting more and more crowded. Delivering basic services, such as sanitation, can be extremely challenging. At the same time, typical solutions that we've traditionally used to solve these challenges, such as sewer systems, are expensive to implement and maintain. Governments are at a loss over what to do. But there is hope. In this session, Sanergy and Splash will discuss how Autodesk technologies (including Fusion 360 and AutoCAD 360) and design thinking have been critical in tackling the sanitation challenge in urban slums in Kenya and Haiti to provide residents with access to clean, safe toilets and hand washing, and to safely remove waste from the environment and convert it into valuable end products, such as fertilizer and energy.

In this session, we'll use an interactive design-thinking approach to tackle this problem: How do you elevate both your tech staff and your tech stack to drive productivity and profitability across a digitally transformed project lifecycle? We'll consider the "What If" scenarios: What if we flip and elevate our perspective? What if, in addition to considering information as knowledge, knowledge is considered information and this big data is compiled, managed, and analyzed as an IT tool? What if we consider knowledge management as a productivity enhancement tool that integrates with any existing learning technology and acts as a catalyst to elevate technology adoption? What if we adopt AI power to augment human input and get faster at developing custom workflow training to develop industry skills and solve real-world challenges? We will identify insights into team engagement and productivity with a direct relationship to competitiveness, project planning, profitability, and ROI.

More and more complex assets are delivered with a digital model that has undeniable importance in the CapEx (capital expenditure) phase. However, a basic question arises for a pharmaceutical leader like GSK: What are the business and manufacturing benefits that can be derived from this smart digital representation of assets, and how? Through "design thinking" tools and an agile approach, we answer this question by focusing on making daily life easier for the shop floor teams. The basic principle focuses on the "spatial contextualization" of information through a 3D or 2D model to support team decision making and team collaboration. The bottom line: The information contextualization enables a prioritization of daily activities and eliminates time previously spent searching for the right information or any asset component. We will share the four phases of this pharma 4.0 digital innovation project: exploration, prototyping, showcasing, and implementation in an interactive storytelling format.

Learning to connect these pieces quickly and efficiently in the architectural, 3D sketch-style environment of FormIt enables quick iteration opening new modes of design thinking. This session will illustrate a process that we're teaching architecture design students: first, how to quickly build design context (both from data acquisition sites and the creation of custom models) of buildings and topography; second, how to develop predesign simulations to inform decisions and create a baseline for building performance; and, finally, how to develop formal strategies by using parametric processes with Dynamo software connecting design ideas and simulation data. In closing, the session will cover predesign visualization beyond FormIt, pushing the file to prototyping and virtual reality.

Design-centric curriculum (DCC) is an alternative learning pathway that was established 2 years ago at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in response to the increasing demand from the industry for engineering graduates who are able to think creatively, define problems, and work across disciplines in a multidisciplinary team. Design-thinking as a technique to develop innovative solutions to a set of problems defined by the students forms the backbone of the curriculum. This alternative curriculum consists of students working in a team on a multi-year, multidisciplinary project that is the main learning vehicle in DCC and is aimed at developing certain desired traits in our students. We will cover the types of formative and summative assessment that were developed by the DCC team to assess the achievement of our students, and we will share with the audience our philosophy, methodology, and experience in the development of the assessment method that was adopted.

India annually produces 01 million tech graduates, but many are considered unemployable due to a lack of skills in comparison to their academic knowledge. Integration of design and making skills can solve this problem with tools like Fusion 360, which is freely available to schools. Fusion 360 synergizes design and manufacturing, enabling students to bring their creative ideas to fruition. However, a heavy content-based curriculum in graduation limits this integration. Established in 2014 at MNIT Jaipur, Autodesk CAM Society is a student-driven club dedicated to teaching and learning manufacturing technology beyond the scope of the curriculum. Their goal is to enhance design & manufacturing skills at an early stage. In one decade, the Society has helped thousands of graduates not only with placement in core companies but also with startups, patent filing, publishing research papers, and winning student competitions. After graduating from their respective university courses, BAC founders Neill and Ian Briggs set up their own design/engineering consultancy, with Neill leading engineering activities and Ian heading up the design elements. The company was commissioned to work on major automotive projects with the likes of Porsche, Mercedes, Smart, AMG, Maybach, Ford and Bentley, but they also gained valuable experience with smaller brands, too. Over time, Ian and Neill would identify a gap in the market that they believed simply had to be filled – a single-seater, road-legal vehicle that focuses purely on the person behind the wheel and is totally uncompromised.
