In this course you will study and implement techniques for modeling and rendering high-resolution tiling textures in 3ds Max software for design visualization, simulation, and games. Starting with a highly detailed model, you will set up a camera and lighting rig using mental ray software for rendering. Additionally, we will set up the rig to produce a tiling texture without perspective using the mental ray software Production Shaders. Then using render passes and render layers, you will produce albedo, diffuse, normal, specular, mask, and ambient occlusion images suitable for a physically based rendering workflow used in modern rendering and game engines.

In this class, we examine a creature modeling and detailing workflow using Autodesk® Mudbox® and Maya® software. Topics covered include concept techniques in SketchBook® Pro software, creating freely in Autodesk® Mudbox® without the worry of the underlying topology, and new retopology techniques that allow for the creation of an animation and rig-ready mesh. The class also takes an in-depth look at the processes of sculpting, detailing, and painting to bring our creature look and style to life.

By using Mudbox early in the ideation phase, designers can explore more options, and then reuse and refine their design concepts within Autodesk® Alias®. This class will walk you through how to prepare and deploy your Inventor software and Fusion 360 software 3D models into bespoke applications for the HTC Vive and the Microsoft HoloLens. Creating and deploying interactions on the HTC Vive and the HoloLens is more like game development than engineering, and that can be a tough barrier to cross for those who don't have a computer science background. You will leave this class with an understanding of how to create and deploy interactive environments that let you walk around your Inventor and Fusion 360 3D models as if they were really there. We'll also cover how to optimize your designs in 3ds Max software for maximum performance, and we'll cover some of the limitations of the hardware. If you've ever wanted to see a full-scale 3D rendering of your designs that you can walk around in and mark up, then this is the class for you!

The success of a new product launch relies heavily on the ability of molding thermoplastic parts within specified tolerances and successfully assembling them into a functional product. Building a mold with the correct mold-shrinkage values is crucial for a given plastic material. Currently, a toolmaker guesses the shrinkage value from the range published by a material supplier before cutting steel. Thus, choosing one value at the mid-point of the range results in a part with vastly different shrinkage values in the flow, cross-flow, and transverse directions. Subsequently, many compromises may have to be made in order to qualify the part and approve the tool before routine production. We have been working with Moldflow software to improve and fine-tune the material testing and plastic-part simulation in order to predict accurate shrinkage values to eliminate the guesswork and make more-educated decisions before ordering tools. This session features Moldflow Insight and Moldflow.

Take your first steps into the world of machine learning. Learn how a neural network can be used to dramatically speed up the removal of noise in ray traced images. In this lab you will learn about noise in rendered images, use a network trained to denoise sample images, and iterate and modify parameters improving the quality of the denoiser. By the end of the lab, you will have the tools and the knowledge to build your own AI accelerated denoiser.

This session will take a look at the Alias road map, research areas, and the latest tool developments in Alias software.

This class will start exploring the basics of the Forge platform through a simple yet representative workflow sample. We’ll first introduce you to the basics of model translations and metadata extractions, jumping then into custom viewer extensions. We’re going to walk you through real-time data sharing aimed at augmenting model usability. We’ll show you how to set up a Socket.IO web framework for multiuser collaboration sessions. At this stage, we’re able to deep dive into data-sharing processes between different environments. We’ll set up a bidirectional link between the Forge Viewer and a real-time crowd simulation made in Unity game engine. On the web side, we’re going to visualize the results and interact with the running simulation agents directly from our web app. At the end, we’ll use these interactions as a source for data mining and business intelligence insights. Through custom charts, we’ll design a dashboard to enable better-informed, data-driven design.

Inspired by the gaming industry, Royal HaskoningDHV introduced augmented reality (AR) to engineering consultancy by bringing to life the firm’s projects through Microsoft HoloLens showcases. An early example is Heerlen Railway Station (see https://bit.ly/2xySKFw). Aspiring to stay at the forefront of digital engineering, we since developed various AR applications to let both engineering consultants and relevant stakeholders truly interact with holograms. Highlights include shared-view solutions to work from different locations, holographic libraries from which to select objects and solutions, and synchronization solutions to push designs back to Revit software. Our industry talk will aim to provide an inspiring vision on the digital future of architecture, engineering, and construction; the role of AR in realizing digital twins; and valuable lessons from our AR applications development agenda.

With nearly everything you need to make an animated film, Maya Entertainment Creation Suite software enables animators and directors to do some real guerrilla filmmaking. This class will walk you through some of the techniques we are employing to bring the feature film Dog Eat Dog to life on a budget of less than $1 million. From timesaving rigging techniques to at-your-desk facial motion capture, we are bringing our entire bag of tricks to bear in our quest to release quality animation on a grassroots budget.

In this class, Neil shows his pipeline for shading and texturing environments, props, and hard surface characters—everything from organic plant life to buildings and hard surface robots. These techniques can be used to texture any high resolution object, whether for VFX and animated films, videogame cinematics, or even architectural work. He discusses shaders as well as all of the available methods for applying textures to your models. The class also covers pattern creation methods, from procedurals and hand-painted textures to photo manipulation. Focus is on efficiently shading thousands of individual objects without the need to spend a lot of time UV mapping everything (although UV mapping is discussed). Although Neil demos all of this using 3ds Max® software, Autodesk® Mudbox® software, Chaos Group's V-Ray®, and Adobe® Photoshop, the principles discussed can be applied to your paint application and renderer of choice.
