    Description

This session's speaker loves technical drawings. Bold outlines, crisp details, precise lettering—he loves it all. But is technical drawing dead? It's said that we live in the age of the paperless office—can this be true? This class was so popular at AU2022 that we ran it twice, and we still had to turn people away! Let's continue the discussion. In this activity-based roundtable, we'll ask the big questions about the future of technical drawing. How did we develop the technical drawing? Why? What have we learned that we should keep? What place do technical drawings hold in the world of digital prototyping and building information modeling (BIM) projects? How will we communicate design intent in the future? How many people got caught out when we moved from hand drawing to CAD? Will we be next? Maybe technical drawings aren't yet dead, but how must design collaboration and communication adapt to meet our future needs? Join us to review technical drawings past and present, and prepare yourself for the future

    Key Learnings

    • Think about why technical drawings are the way they are, and where the rules came from.
    • Discuss what a technical drawing is for and what it needs to do.
    • Consider what might replace the drawing. What has been tried so far? What succeeded (and what didn't!)?
    • Consider what the future could bring. What would a world look like without technical drawings?
