In this class, we start with an overview of how simulation can be used during the complete design process. Simulation enables our customers to stand out from their competition because they can be more innovative and get to market faster while ensuring product quality. We cover several tools, including Autodesk® Force Effect™ and Dynamic Simulation in Inventor® 3D CAD software. We look at sloshing by performing a CFD analysis with Autodesk® Simulation CFD software, and we use Autodesk® Simulation Mechanical software to analyze vibrations.

More connection speed, more reaction time—interoperability plays a vital role in our daily design collaborations that help with flexible production lines and reduced integration costs. Many industrial machinery and manufacturing industries have realized the benefits of using both 2D and 3D CAD software together—and the list of reasons is long, including better collaboration and increased efficiency, to name a few. In those cases, it’s important that your data remains fully associative. In all such scenarios, AutoCAD Mechanical software provides a feature called Inventor Link that enables you to link Inventor assembly (.iam) and part (.ipt) documents to a drawing file and display the 3D model in model space. Then, you can generate 2D drawings of the 3D model in paper space and annotate them. This class aims to show how you can use Inventor Link in AutoCAD Mechanical for increased efficiency, reduced time, and better collaboration.

This class will outline the real case study of virtual reality (VR) technology adoption by Tenova, an industrial machinery company for mining and metals, supported by Autodesk Consulting. After a brief introduction to Tenova and the project’s background, attendees will see activities run by Autodesk Consulting and Tenova to lead to the adoption of a tailored process for using VR for design review and visualization. The audience will see the workflow implemented, and they’ll learn the process to use 3ds Max software and 3ds Max Interactive to navigate a Filmbox file with Live Viewer. This class will look at how Alias software and VRED software enable the design and visualization of heavy machinery and equipment.

This case study explores how the Inventor Configurator Automation, Integration, & Customization Project streamlines design workflows by automating the generation of 3D models, 2D drawing sheets, and related outputs. Traditionally, designers manually created models and drawings, a process that was time-consuming and prone to human error. By using Automation, Integration, & Customization, the system processes user-provided XML data, integrates with BIM 360 software for file management, and uses the Autodesk Platform Services Design Automation, Integration, & Customization API to generate and manage outputs in the cloud. This innovation enhances efficiency, reduces errors, and provides quick access to essential design outputs.

Fusion 360 software now offers a simple workflow for programming industrial robot arms. Anyone familiar with post-processing machine code from Fusion 360 can now create robot code in the same way. During this lab, users will use the manufacturing space from Fusion 360 to generate robot native code that can drive industrial robot arms. First, we will show a generic robot workflow within Fusion 360 that will post with the ABB post processor. Then, we will cover exporting code into a virtual robot simulator, ABB RobotStudio, for validation. We’ll then pivot to recordings at Autodesk Technology Centers, explaining calibration of various coordinate systems localizing the robot arm and robot operation for milling applications. We’ll introduce other applications that participants can use with this workflow, such as welding and additive. Finally, we will share various case studies from Autodesk Technology Center residents and customers utilizing Fusion 360 for industrial robots.

Industrial robots have come a long way from the simple pick-and-place operations on production lines and they are now being introduced into an increasing number of applications. Their versatility, large working volume, robustness, and high repeatability, along with their low relative cost makes them well suited to the repetitive and destructive environments of production facilities.Industrial robot technology has evolved significantly with new methodologies as well as new capabilities. Robots were traditionally programmed by teaching the robot every point required for a process. With modern software programming tools, the path generation can be completed offline, away from the shop floor. Full virtual simulation allows any issues to be picked up before the process is run on the real cell. This has resulted in significantly reduced programming times and therefore an increase in the complexity of the tasks that can be achieved while removing the programming task from the critical path of a new robot install. However, the software resources available only solve half the issue. Industrial robot hardware has inherent errors that limit the applications they can complete. These include inaccurate methods for identifying coordinate systems and work offsets, error stacking from the robot joints, response to applied forces and axis reversals. This talk aims to look at the software and hardware solutions that can reduce or completely remove these sources of error for applications such as milling, polishing, and non-contact metrology.

Generative design is often seen as an alien parts generator. In this session, we will share how we incorporated this design exploration method into our traditional design process, and how we applied the method on a very typical welded parts assembly of an automatic tools changer on a CNC machine tool. With no specific expectations, as we believed it was already fully optimized, we achieved almost 20% of mass reduction, positively impacting the overall machine precision. And as a side benefit—we got really good-looking parts. You'll learn which selection method we used to identify potential parts for generative design and how we defined the success criteria. We'll cover the whole process, from multiple designs exploration up to production and installation itself. We'll also discuss our generative design rollout plan.

Industrial robots are suitable for an extremely wide range of fabrication and construction processes. Commonly used in automotive production and other high-volume production, robots are now implemented in the production of architectural components, low-volume production, and academia. The potential of the Industrial Robotic manipulator makes for an appealing tool for shops, design firms, and fabricators who want numerical control capability but do not have the means to invest in many specialized computer numerical control (CNC) tools. As the cost of hardware drops, designers have more access to these tools; but perceived hurdles limit the diffusion of manipulators in many settings. This course provides a pragmatic intro to the Industrial Robot as a tool that supports many numerically controlled activities. The course will provide details of the procurement, requisite tooling, safety, installation, and calibration.
