Direct modeling is an extremely powerful tool in Fusion 360 software. The use of features that follow natural gestures and movements (i.e., pull, twist, stretch) empowers users to fully immerse in a modeling experience that provides enjoyment, exploration, and a sense of “flow.” Direct modeling can also bypass steps such as setting planes, sketches, and other 3D commands, which could get in the way of modeling workflows. While direct modeling is typically associated with T-Splines via the Sculpt environment, it is possible to also use it in parametric settings. This presentation will illustrate the power of direct modeling in both environments in Fusion 360 software with the use of simple yet effective workflows and design examples.

In this class, you will learn how to best identify parts for redesign. You will receive a few examples and then see in Fusion 360 software how to redesign the parts keeping design-for-manufacturing (DFM) rules for metal additive manufacturing (AM) in mind. The goal is to redesign the parts using simple operations in Fusion 360 to see that you don't need an organic topology optimized part to get an economical use case. You’ll learn the limits of metal AM and when it is definitely not smart to use this technology.

Solar energy is clean and limitless, and the operational costs are close to nothing once you’ve installed a solar panel as no fuel is needed to create a considerable amount of energy. And a single kerosene wick burns an estimated 80 liters of fuel, producing more than 250 kilograms of carbon dioxide per year. To help people living in remote places with limited access to electricity, we made a low-cost solar light bulb as a replacement to a harmful kerosene lamp. We will share the technical workflow while creating the solar lamp inside the Fusion 360 Electronics and Modeling workspace, demonstrating an effective ECAD—MCAD collaboration.

In this demo, we will walk through a simplified example of capturing real-time manufacturing data (cutting temperatures) from a hobby-class computer numerical control (CNC) router as it machines aluminum, visualizing that data on the visual model of the part being manufactured. Cutting tool and workpiece temperatures are direct indications of cutting efficiency and tool health. Mapping temperatures can help validate and suggest adjustments to feeds, speeds, and depth of cut to achieve the nominal chip load. While this is far from an industrial solution, this demo will show the power of IoT manufacturing within a simplified context to explore the utility and promise of cloud-based manufacturing solutions, built with Forge.

Micromachining is a notoriously demanding process that requires precision beyond levels that most machine shops are comfortable with. However, any shop can take on micromachining jobs with the right cutting tools, machines, accessories, and some knowledge on the differences between traditional machining and the nuances that micromachining brings with it. In this session, we will dive into strategies for successful micromachining, covering both micromilling and microturning applications. We will talk about cutting-tool selection and how it can differ from traditional machining standards, how miniature tooling reacts differently in the cut than larger tooling, and ways that you can take your machines to the next level with high-speed spindles and accessories.

Fusion 360 software is a complete product-design tool that enables users to go from concept to production with integrated CAD, CAM, and CAE technology. We hear that a lot, but in reality, what does it actually mean? Is it the Swiss Army knife of design software? Can it do everything? This class will take attendees through the complete design and manufacturing process, from initial concept scribbles all the way through to generating files for 3D printing and toolpaths for a computer numerical control (CNC) job. We'll kick off with bringing some drawings into the Fusion 360 environment and using them as template. Then we will move on to some basic simulations, carrying out a design change and generating some communication visuals with custom materials. Finally, we'll hit up the Manufacture workspace to generate some toolpaths for CNC machining and potentially fire up a CNC machine (using Fusion Team to share tool libraries).

As engineers, we solve problems by evaluating inputs, outputs, and boundary conditions. Engineers have attempted to solve problems surrounding the effects of global poverty since it has existed, but often neglect important historical and political inputs. Neglecting these inputs has resulted in growing global inequalities in terms of wealth, human rights, and livelihood. One factor leading to these disparities is how we go about measuring progress toward a more equitable world. How can engineering help effectively measure global inequalities and give justice to vulnerable people who have been and continue to be excluded and exploited, all while bearing the brunt of the ecological impact of climate change? In this class, we will discuss better ways of measuring inequalities, designing for environmental justice, and bringing the industry’s attention to these systemic and historical realities which are often ignored by practitioners.

In this instructional demo, we’ll show how Fusion 360 Electronics software can be maximized with Fusion 360 strong modeling tools to produce a distortion-effect pedal end to end. We'll discuss the design of the effect in detail, as well as how having an integrated workflow between electronics and mechanical tooling simplifies and expedites the design process. Throughout the demo, we will be highlighting the specific features in Fusion 360 that enabled us to go from idea to completed prototype.

Often times, we hear from users that they don't really understand how to get started with Generative Design in Fusion 360. Questions like these regularly come up: What types of problems is it good for? What knowledge do I need to get started? How do I get access? How much will it cost? We would like to take this opportunity to help set up a strong foundation for how best to get started with Generative Design in Fusion 360. We will provide answers to these questions and many more during this session. You should expect to leave this session with a clear understanding of how to put Generative Design into action on your first project.

Last year we did a class (“How to Use Fusion 360 and Inventor for Effective Designs”) where we linked Fusion 360 files with Inventor using Desktop Connector. The most requested addition to that was to link those files into Vault software, so this year we’ll go through some of the different configurations for how we can load and manage these Fusion 360 files in Vault. Some of the things we will look at include creating the connection and adding the files, as well as managing the files; and we’ll also discuss version and revisions of the files in Vault.

Drawing templates, when used to create drawings in Fusion 360 software, can both accelerate the time it takes to complete your mechanical engineering documentation, and ensure your drawings consistently represent your business and project standards. We will start by creating a new title block, with fields that can be automatically populated with information from the design, project, and your profile. We will add this to a new template, then walk through other options for customizing the template for your specific office and business needs. We will then show the power of "placeholder" elements in your template, and demonstrate how they can help remove much of the tedium of creating a new drawing from scratch.

Choosing which software tool to use isn't always easy. Understanding which tool is best for the job is critical when developing new designs. Additionally, not understanding how tools work together can cause unnecessary rework, project delays, and unsatisfactory design performance. This instructional demonstration will help you understand how Inventor software, Fusion 360 software, and AutoCAD software work as independent design tools as well as in connected workflows.

Fusion 360 software is a cloud-powered CAD, CAM, and CAE tool, and it is the primary software for the instruction of degree apprentices at the AMRC Training Centre, part of the University of Sheffield. With rising student numbers, it was becoming increasingly difficult to provide detailed and timely feedback to students as they learned the basics of Fusion 360. In this session, Joe Palmer will present a bespoke feedback tool that has been coded in Python and implemented using the Fusion 360 API. This tool provides instantaneous feedback to students about the quality of their CAD models by assessing key model metrics. These metrics enable a complete picture of model quality to be determined by the script without any input from course tutors. This has empowered tutors to spend more time on valuable activities within the classroom. We will discuss a background of the Fusion 360 API, the tool's development process, and details of the scoring algorithm. We will also present a road map for future development.

In this class, we'll use the case study of designing a lab power supply. This is a common tool in electronics and by working through its design, we'll highlight how the electronics workspace, e-cooling simulation, and mechanical modeling can all be capitalized on to simplify and expedite the production of this product. As we go through the case study, we'll clearly demonstrate the benefits of having all of these tools in one application—namely, faster product development with fewer rework cycles.
