I’ve had over 22 years of experience running a successful profitable company and I’ve experienced 3 major market crashes, so I know that staying in business is very challenging. Without the proper planning and know-how, most businesses will not survive. Talented artists create most companies in our industry. Unfortunately most will struggle and go out of business because of their lack of business knowledge. In my roundtable I would like to address some key items most companies will experience along the way, including business planning; marketing; how to be profitable; when to say no; and expanding markets. We will also discuss defining your company/industry; growing a company and how to structure that growth; developing client relationships; and knowing what to expect during key milestones in your business and how to react and plan for them. I have always said, “I may have the best renderers in the industry, but it’s my business knowledge that will keep my company going.”

This will be a discussion about the impact an owner representative and client advocate—who is also a virtual design and construction (VDC) manager—employed specifically for engagement, collaboration, and leadership can have on a project team. We will discuss and evaluate the implementation of Autodesk Construction Cloud and VDC processes for internal engineering in a large manufacturing company. We will explore outcomes for project performance. And we'll look at the real implications for architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) teams when there is an active VDC manager acting on behalf of the client needs in context of traditional design and construction project workflows.

The speaker’s vision of providing a client with a complete, live, and sustainable facilities management (FM) solution was realized. Happy FM team, happy owners. Then the unthinkable happened: Autodesk changed the Document Management software. Chaos reigned! Cats and dogs living together! The speaker was in rebuild mode, and it had to be done fast. The new BIM 360 Document Management is often perceived in one of a couple of ways: complex and clumsy or more controllable and manageable. At first, the speaker saw it the first way, and was tired and worn out. Then the speaker went into rebuild mode for a weekend and came up with a leaner solution that capitalized on the new BIM 360 Docs system and BIM 360 Ops software. Come on a journey and learn to capitalize on this technology, bending the software systems to your needs—then layer in some cool new tech to make even stronger environments. We’ll look at BIM 360 Document Management, BIM 360 Ops, and the Matterport scanning system, and we’ll dip into a little Forge programming along the way.

Everybody seems to be talking about the gender gap at work, but nobody seems to know what to do about it. Gender diversity is a complex issue and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Most corporate diversity strategies to date have focused on supporting women through programs like mentorship and women’s leadership conferences. This approach sounds good in theory, but it places the responsibility solely on women. The truth is that women are not holding themselves back from leadership; the latest research confirms that workplace culture is preventing women from achieving equality. Things will never change unless all genders take part in finding a solution. In this interactive session, we’ll talk about how all genders can get involved, and how to use the concept of sponsorship (not mentorship) to accelerate women into leadership positions.

Consistency in design and drafting are very important for maintaining and sharing drawings internally and externally in AutoCAD. The CAD Standards Manager can help you check, correct, and maintain standards within your company. At the end of this class, you’ll be able to configure template files for standards, attach those standards files to a drawing to check consistency, use the batch checker to create a violation report, and understand how to use the powerful layer translator. Let’s investigate these tools together to help provide a more efficient approach to producing and checking design drawings for consistency and standards.

In the longer term, engineering software is being integrated with project delivery tools for schedule, cost, and asset information to deliver a consistent 6D experience for our clients.

This course will cover multiple project case studies from Perkins+Will concerning how virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) were integrated into the design and presentation processes. Each project case study will break down a unique application and strategy using 2D panoramas, VR, and AR within the project. The class will walk through the modeling, software, and hardware workflows involved in creating design content. The demonstration will also cover accessibility techniques in order to be able to deliver these types of presentations to large crowds, regardless of technical skill level. We will examine difficulties, pitfalls, and successes, as well as insight into how well the client reacted and was engaged in the resulting presentation. In addition, all attendees will have the opportunity to experience the case studies in VR.

This class will analyze data from the FlexLM License Manager to create a live license dashboard using an open-source set of tools. We’ll use Business Intelligence platforms (BI) and MY SQL to identify the demand and consumption of licenses per application, group of applications, and users per design team. The interactive dashboard will provide valuable statistics of the license usage per software, which help to predict the license consumption for future projects.
