The Revit 2015 software release introduced the ability to link Industry Foundation Class (IFC) files to the Revit software IFC .NET open source code. This ability enables the Revit software API users who are familiar with IFC to make their own customized versions of not only the exporter and associated user interface, but also the importer. This class will start with a technical overview of the IFC format, including the concepts of schemas and Model View Definitions (MVDs) and how they are used in Revit software. We will then cover the major design concepts for the .NET code, particularly the linker, with the intention of understanding how to make simple modifications to the open source. This class is intended for users who have a decent knowledge of IFC but want to know more about the inner workings of the format and how Revit software implements IFC. The class will look at, but not emphasize, Revit 2015 software IFC open source .NET code and the associated Revit software API.

IFC is a lot like ghosts: some believe it is real, and some believe it is against basic laws of nature. This class will make you believe in ghosts. IFC is real, it's there and, if you're a non-US Revit software user, chances are that sooner or later you will be forced to work with it. More and more countries are mandating the use of IFC as a deliverable in government projects. And from there, more and more commercial parties will do the same. For those of us working on such projects, IFC is very real. This class focuses on a practical understanding of IFC and how to work with it in Revit: (1) creating mapping tables for import and export of IFC files, (2) using the available options to override these settings on an instance basis, (3) using and modifying the Open Source Sourceforge IFC Exporter, including how to map parameters to IFC properties and how to create and organize custom data in your IFC file, and (5) modeling tips and tricks for a proper export.

Location—where work happens—is critical for designing, constructing, and managing assets in the built world. This includes locating assets on the ground, defining logical locations for specific work, and locating the definitive digital record expressing the asset. Arcadis, Esri, and Autodesk have been collaborating on techniques to simplify and standardize these concepts, with practical results. This study will help building information modeling (BIM) professionals use shared coordinates between Civil 3D files and Revit software, use Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) 4x3 properties to define IFC locations, and share these locations with geographic information system (GIS) professionals and stakeholders. We'll examine a practical example from a light rail BlueSky project that includes Civil 3D, Revit, and IFC files for ground, alignment, rail, and architectural elements.

Exchanging data from Revit software to other applications is very often a file-based and time-consuming task. In our case, it's typically based on an IFC export from Revit. This IFC file is then imported into another application and the result is imported into Revit by an add-in that reads a text or Excel file. We’ve addressed these challenges with the Autodesk Forge Data Exchange API, exchanging only the necessary subset of data. This API is still in beta and there are two possible cases that we may demonstrate on Autodesk University. The first one is to use the Autodesk Forge Data Exchange API to automatically get the analytical model from Revit, open it in a structural analysis application, do the analysis there, and then send the result automatically back to Revit. The results can then be used to create structural reinforcement and to suggest changes to the model. The other case is based on sending properties data back and forth between Revit and applications that handle building specifications, prices, and sustainability data.

This session will look at a process with an in-house tool developed among other things with Autodesk Platform Services technologies allowing users to inject a Revit /IFC model into Power BI in just minutes, in order to visualize and exploit the data for different use cases (engineering and site work team). In this session, we'll view and export Bill of Quantities, check the data (automatic coloration depending of the value of the data), link to another database as an SOA (schedule of accommodation) to compare with the model and track it, and link to the schedule of the project to do a "4D."

This class will teach Revit API users how to use the external resource service to manage linked models and other external data. You will learn how to easily create references to Revit software, DWG™ software, or Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) models that are provided by a Revit plug-in. This can give you more control over how to manage and control access to links. For example, in a work-shared environment, users with different machine setups can still access the same linked data. (Or not access it!) You will also learn how to customize your keynote data and avoid using a keynote file entirely if you wish. We'll also go over some tips and tricks for using links, including some enhancements made in Revit 2018 software.
