Robotic Fabrication is beginning to be leveraged towards customizable production methods in Architecture. However, typical building and construction processes require an incredible amount of process knowledge, dexterity,and craftsmanship, making purely automated workflows unrealistic in the building industry. The introduction of collaborative robotics to construction processes could be more viable for implementation, where intelligent task tradeoffs, background computational processing, and informative user interfaces facilitate collaborative construction between man and robot. This class discusses the possibilities and challenges for Human Robot collaboration in Architecture, as well as a set of tools in generative design, interprocess communication, and user interfaces which enable it.

A presented study, “Collaborative Robotic Workbench,” developed for the Kuka Innovation Award, 2018, was a live demonstration where construction tasks were exchanged between a builder and a collaborative robot towards the construction of a generatively designed nonstandard wooden system. In this case, an augmented Reality interface deployed in the Microsoft Hololens gave builders direct access to robotic control and superimposed digital information, enabling them to directly interact with the robot on construction tasks. This workbench consisted of additional components: a background computational engine and server for path planning and managing construction tasks, and an online webplatform developed with Forge which updated the construction process in realtime for remote visualization and diagnostics. This course will explain in detail the computation and communication protocols utilized in the project, with a more in depth focus on how Forge APIs were utilized for a custom webplatform and interface.
