The mass timber industry is on the rise, and with it comes unique challenges on the jobsite. As many projects move to a hybrid of steel and wood, we need to be able to provide products that can be easily used and understood early in the design process. With Informed Design we can predefine structural members—from columns to beams to preassembled trusses—that can be added at the beginning of the design process. We can provide flexibility for our customers by giving them specific parameters they can change while still allowing the design to be easy to manufacture. With our push to implement lean manufacturing principles, these designs allow us to scale our business and increase profitability while providing a great experience for our customers.

The country’s leading mechanical contractors were some of the earliest adopters of Building Information Modeling (BIM) due to the vast potential for off-site prefabrication. Nearly ten years after its first BIM project, J.C. Cannistraro is sharing some lessons learned from modeling, fabricating, and building some of the most high-profile hospital and biotech projects in the Northeast. Using primarily Autodesk® Navisworks® and Autodesk® Fabrication software, we will explain how we use collaborative thinking, Lean methodology, and BIM tools throughout the preconstruction and construction phases to maximize the efficiency of delivery and installation on every project.

This hands-on lab teaches how to use Inventor software to simplify workflows, data processing, and proprietary designs using the Inventor Simplification feature. Simplification, previously available from Autodesk Labs as a technology preview, is now included with Inventor 2014. The Simplification tool is leaner than Shrink Wrap, yet it produces well-derived components. Intelligent referencing can and will assist in the heavy upper loads for large assemblies. Combinations of iParts and iAssemblies are also included. The lab begins with a short lecture discussing preparation for Simplification, then transitions into workflow layout methodology. We end with Inventor modeling. You will learn best practices for using components and assemblies to reduce time spent (productivity) and to increase drawing information.

Traditionally, design decisions are made and solutions are developed before understanding the potential outcomes of those decisions. We then validate the solutions, revise decisions, and redesign, creating massive waste in the process. This is the paradox of design. Design optimization techniques and technology (APIs, visual programming, and simulation tools) can help break this paradox by simulating many options and the potential outcomes—informing decisions rather than simply validating them after the fact. This technology will change how we design, much like the advent of Building Information Modeling (BIM) did a decade ago. Therefore, it is critical to understand the fundamental changes to the design process that will be necessary to capitalize on this new technology. This round-table discussion will explore the paradox of design, as well as the challenges of design optimization, lean design processes, simulation technology, and computational design.

CSCEC 8 is the major subsidiary of CSCEC, with more than $40 billion in annual contracts. There are approximately 3,000 Building Information Modeling (BIM) engineers in CSCEC 8 who are dealing with BIM-related business. This class will show you how to use BIM technology (especially Autodesk, Inc., Solutions) to strengthen the construction management capabilities for general contractors in China, and we will share the real BIM values with megaproject experiences. The samples will be CTF Tianjin Financial Center (580 meters in height), Shanghai New International Expo Center (140 million square meters), and ICON Cloud (a landmark in west China). The following values that we may introduce include BIM for planning, site management, quantity takeoff, 4D/5D simulation, BIM+RFID (Radio Frequency Identification and Detection), laser scanning, fabrication, and BIM 360 software, and so on.

This class will focus on how companies can use innovative DED (directed energy deposition) additive processes in their businesses to respond faster, produce more efficiently, and produce parts they couldn't have through traditional manufacturing techniques. We'll be focusing primarily on PowerMill 2019 software's support for additive/hybrid manufacturing processes, and the Diversified Machine Systems (DMS) Hybrid Machining Center that combines 5-axis additive and 5-axis subtractive machining. You'll learn which industries have lead the way in adopting these technologies and how they've implemented them, which applications in your shop could benefit from DED hybrid technology, how to most effectively plan for hybrid processes, and how to best utilize the new Additive tools in PowerMill.
