Elevate your design and manufacturing processes with Autodesk Fusion
Copying and pasting sketches in Autodesk Fusion is a simple but powerful way to speed up design work, reuse geometry, and maintain consistency across parts and designs. Whether you’re duplicating part outlines, transferring sketch geometry to a new plane, or reusing reference features, Fusion provides several reliable ways to copy sketches—within a design or across files.
This post reflects the current Fusion experience, including recent interface updates and supported workflows.
Before you copy: understand the active sketch
In Autodesk Fusion, sketch geometry can only be pasted into an active sketch—meaning the sketch you’re currently editing. If no sketch is active, paste options won’t appear.
To activate a sketch:
- Double‑click it in the timeline, or
- Right‑click it in the browser and select Edit Sketch
This distinction remains one of the most common reasons copying “doesn’t work,” especially for newer users.
How to copy sketch geometry
You can copy entire sketches or selected sketch entities.
Common ways to copy:
- Select sketch geometry in the canvas, then:
- Right‑click → Copy
- Or use Ctrl+C / Cmd+C
- Select multiple sketch entities across one or more sketches using window selection or modifier keys
Fusion copies the geometry—not sketch constraints or dimensions—allowing flexibility when pasting into new contexts.
How to paste a sketch
Paste into the same sketch
- Edit the sketch
- Paste using Ctrl+V / Cmd+V or right‑click → Paste
- Position the copied geometry as needed
Paste into a new sketch or plane
- Create or activate a new sketch on a plane or planar face
- Paste the sketch geometry
- Adjust position or orientation as needed
Fusion does not allow sketch geometry to exist outside of a sketch environment, which is why pasting only works when a sketch is active.
Copying sketches between designs
To reuse sketches across design files, Fusion supports multiple approaches:
- Copy and paste sketch entities between open designs (active sketch required)
- Insert > Derive to reference a sketch from another design
- Save sketch as DXF and insert it into a new design
Each method serves a different purpose depending on whether you want a live reference or independent geometry.
When copying isn’t the best option
For repeated or symmetric geometry, Fusion’s parametric tools are often better than copy‑paste:
- Rectangular or circular patterns
- Mirror
- Offset
- Project or Include Geometry
These tools maintain relationships and are easier to update later in the design process.

Frequently asked questions
To copy and paste a sketch in Autodesk Fusion, select the sketch geometry, copy it to the clipboard, activate the destination sketch, and then paste the geometry. Fusion only allows pasting into an active sketch.
If Paste is unavailable, it usually means no sketch is active. Fusion requires an active sketch before pasted geometry can be placed.
Yes. Create or activate a sketch on the desired plane, then paste the copied sketch geometry into that active sketch.
Copied sketch geometry includes constraints and dimensions where possible, but behavior may change depending on the destination sketch and references. Always review constraints after pasting.
Not always. For repeated geometry, Fusion’s pattern tools are usually more robust. Copy and paste works best for one‑off reuse or early‑stage iteration.
Yes, but the destination component must be active and contain an active sketch. For parametric relationships across components, projection or derive workflows may be more appropriate.
