This presentation will explore using a combination of LiDAR (light detection and ranging)-derived existing models and proposed Building Information Modeling (BIM) modeling. Topics to be covered include an introduction to 3D laser scanning, using ReCap software to exploit LiDAR data to obtain as-built or existing conditions, bringing the point clouds into InfraWorks software and 3ds Max software for preliminary and conceptual design, generation of BIM design for AutoCAD Civil 3D software, and blending LiDAR data with proposed design in AutoCAD Civil 3D software. We will demonstrate how to avoid potential construction issues by combining these technologies to virtually construct the project. We will also discuss integrating industry innovations, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and automatic machine grading (AMG).

This class is designed for the surveyor, engineer, or planner who is interested in finding out more about incorporating the use of LiDAR data into their project lifecycle using products from Infrastructure Design Suite Ultimate 2014. The class focuses on the key workflow processes for incorporating LiDAR data from data collection and review to planning and design. With the addition of ReCap™ software to the 2014 design suites, the ability to process and review LiDAR data has been incorporated into our project workflow. In this class, we begin by reviewing and editing a sample LiDAR dataset in ReCap. Next, we see how the data can be incorporated into planning stage visualization using InfraWorks™ software. Following InfraWorks, we see how the LiDAR data can be incorporated into AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software and used for creating existing ground models for the basis of design using Infrastructure Design Suite Ultimate.

This class will discuss how reality capture BIM (Building Information Modeling) was utilized at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) by multiple architects, engineers, construction managers, construction engineers, and building owners. The class will discuss how the owners and AEC teams worked together to effectively utilize BIM and reality capture data. We’ll explore what various workflows yielded the most success within Revit software, Civil 3D software, ReCap software, and BIM 360 software.

Southern California Edison (SCE) uses light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-equipped aircraft to identify overhead lines with clearances that don't comply with local and federal requirements. This involves many utilities, including transmission, distribution, and telecommunications. In this class we will discuss how infractions are solved using a 4-step approach: identify, evaluate, design, and remediation. The LiDAR results show opportunities where man-made encroachments occur, as well as revealing environmental encroachments that involve vegetation management. We will look back at lessons learned to date, and we'll take a look forward at the future of advanced surveying and design systems. This all happens within the framework of SCE's enterprise level workflow management system.

The opportunity to capitalize on InfraWorks software as the palette to combine many disparate data sets together is never more evident or valuable than the ability to pull Esri geographic information system (GIS) data from readily available sources and combine that with mobile mapping data that is captured for asset inventory or design survey projects to build a comprehensive data set using all the best available sources. This class will demonstrate how to pull utility and sign information from separate GIS databases into InfraWorks, then pull in mobile mapping data from the same area, and combine the 2 for asset verification and change management. From there, full feature extraction will be completed on the LIDAR (light detecting and ranging) point cloud, with these attributed features stored back in the appropriate GIS databases.

We will cover the workflow used to scan an object with a LiDAR scanner on your mobile device, and introduce it to Revit software using ReCap software. This point cloud will be used as the base of your model. During the session, we will do a live preview of how the process is done, going step by step until we generate a file that we can import and use in Revit.

This class will examine opportunities to collect data using Leica static scanners, backpack scanners, and mobile mappers, and how to extract intelligence from these point clouds using InfraWorks software and ReCap software.

This case study will explore the first-ever commercial drone operations permitted within the rim of the Grand Canyon, and how the imagery captured was used to inform a critical water infrastructure project. Grand Canyon National Park, in Northern Arizona, is considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It encompasses an impressive 278 miles of the Colorado River and adjacent uplands and averages more than 10 miles wide. To support work to modernize the Grand Canyon Water System—which serves thousands of residents and millions of annual visitors—we used drones, surveying, and LiDAR technology to acquire high-resolution orthomosaic images and point clouds. In this digital transformation success story, we also employed Autodesk tools such as AutoCAD Civil, ReCap, Revit, and other Autodesk products.

Can 2D wiring drawings and 3D mesh models play together? This class will explore the possibilities of using iPhone/iPad Pro LiDAR to create mesh models of substation assets in the field. In this case study, working with a utility customer, we scanned their substation wiring panels with an iPad and iPhone Pro. Next, we created mesh models in a ReCap Photo environment and connected it to its 2D drawings in AutoCAD Electrical software. Finally, we attached it as part of a lifecycle in Vault software. Capturing this data could allow engineers and designers to see the actual wiring in a model with their 2D wiring drawing. This can also allow snapshots of how the rack was wired at that point in time. We’ll go over the process of retrieving the data, the differences in hardware, exploring the advantages and shortcomings of the data retrieved and how we may further the process as the technology improves.

This interview-style industry talk will take a deep dive into how Saunders Construction implements and delivers scanning technology. Matt Hamann, integrated services manager at Saunders, will lead us through his real-world experiences with LIDAR (light detection and ranging) workflows and processes. Saunders has been providing and utilizing high-definition laser scanning for the last few years over a wide variety of project types with many different needs. The main distinguishing factor setting Saunders apart in the laser scanning community is the firm's ability to deliver data that is highly valuable and immediately useful to the clients as well as job-site teams. By taking the time to clearly identify the client's goals of the scans, Saunders can formulate a plan and provide a proposal of services to reach the end goal. The end deliverable will be outlined clearly, including point cloud accuracy, training time, and the provision of technical assistance as needed.

Wales, Alaska, is the most westerly inhabited village in North America. Having easy access to the site is not feasible if you should happen to forget what it looks like—not to mention that it’s covered in snow for 75% of the year. So let’s build a road over 10 miles of permafrost with the use of 12,000 acres of LiDAR (light detection and ranging) data. Using InfraWorks 360 software, we’ll work in 4D and adjust the road location over the permafrost. Then we’ll use InfraWorks 360 Hydrology to determine the watersheds and culvert locations, and size them for us. This session features InfraWorks 360 and AutoCAD Civil 3D.

This talk will demonstrate a streamlined geographic information system (GIS) / mapping workflow developed by CaseIntel Corporation and Autodesk, Inc., for electric utilities to support a highly automated design, build, operate, and maintain workflow. This process uses AutoCAD 360 web app, ReCap software, and LiDAR (light detection and ranging) scanning in the field; AutoCAD Map 3D software and CaseIntel NetGIS for electric utility mapping; InfraWorks 360 software and Infrastructure Map Server software for visualization; and AutoCAD Utility Design software for designing new services.

This case study of the Alamo Master Plan in San Antonio, Texas, reviews the use of LIDAR (light detection and ranging) and photogrammetry in the creation of a computer model. The model was used for both documentation in Revit software and visualization in 3ds Max software, and it documented 3 square kilometers of dense urban environment in less than 6 weeks. At Autodesk University 2018, we unveiled our innovative approach to deploying high-definition 3D laser scanning on cast-in-place concrete projects in San Francisco the day prior to concrete placement, analyzing the 3D point cloud against the BIM, and delivering a highly detailed report of deviations the following morning that the construction team could use to rectify any out-of-tolerance elements prior to concrete placement. The result was the highest quality ever achieved on CIP projects. The logical next step was to look inward at our process, software, and hardware for efficiency and quality gains, then look outward for other solutions. We deployed, tested, and analyzed the data from the following reality capture solutions in our quest to see if there truly is one tool that rules them all. We’ll compare the results from each unit and suggest the appropriate application for each.
