Removing the Barriers: New Approaches for Industrial Design Students
Using examples from recent student work at San Jose State University, this session will present a case study on how the introduction of CAD earlier in design workflow benefitted students with little or no design abilities. It will explore how students were able to ramp up quickly and remove the barriers to entry for learning the industrial design process. Incorporating Fusion 360 in the industrial design curriculum at San Jose State University was pivotal in expanding product development workflows in other emerging technologies that improved students' industrial design development success. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), and 3D printing make it possible to maintain continuity in design development and evaluation conversations, while also reducing environmental impact through more sustainable, iterative practice

A Practical Guide for Generative Design in Product and Industrial Design

Generative design is a powerful tool that requires technical knowledge that doesn’t necessarily align with how designers work. This class will explore four key strategies for integrating generative design into product and industrial design: 1) Understanding best practices for setting up a generative design study, and determining how much modeling work is needed prior to running the study. 2) Obtaining outcomes that align with the design’s original vision. It’s common to see designers grow frustrated as they run several studies that create shapes that are unusable as actual components of a product. 3) Understanding in practical terms details related to forces, constraints, and other technical information that is not commonly used in product design, and that might affect the effectiveness of the generative outcomes. 4) Understanding how to best merge generative design geometry with other components that have been modeled directly in Fusion 360 software.

An Introduction to Alias for Product (Industrial) Design
This session will be an introduction to the world of Alias product design, concept modeling, and detailed surface modeling. We’ll look at how automation can speed up the design process—allowing faster and more informed design making, as well creating shareable and reusable IP across the design pipeline. Experience-based decision making is becoming more important, and we’ll look at trends and offer insights into how this can help industrial and product designers gather customers insights. Disparate tools need cross-team and cross-function collaboration, making the designers of tomorrow even more efficient. Making decisions faster (with confidence) across teams and geographies is key. We believe that the future of design will start with the customer, and how we ensure that connection works (as well as enterprise-wide integration) in a seamless manner.

Autodesk Fusion 360 Deep Dive: Freeform, Parametric, and AI in Industrial Design
Industrial and product design require strong sets of approaches, from organic shapes for inspiration to precise parametric models for manufacturability—and even enhancements driven by artificial intelligence (AI). Combining these workflows can be complex and limit innovation. This session will explore efficient workflows in Autodesk Fusion 360 software that maximize the design process, using an office task chair as a case study. The seat and backrest use Freeform (T-Splines) for organic modeling, while the base and pivot mechanism employ parametric modeling for precision. Generative Design is used in the legs and frame by setting material and structural criteria, allowing AI to generate novel forms. Finally, geometric patterns enhance appearance and reduce material use. You’ll learn how to integrate these techniques seamlessly, saving time while maintaining design intent.

Educating Industrial Designers for the Digital Age
With the advent of ways to visualize ideas, develop design solutions, and rapidly prototype using digital software technologies, traditional ways of teaching industrial design in the classroom environment are lately being questioned by educators, employers, and students. The intent of this class is to present a curriculum model for teaching industrial design using digital software technologies as and where applicable. We will cover courses demonstrating the incorporation of digital software technologies for ideation, modeling, project management, drafting, prototyping, analysis, and injection mold design. Successful integration of this curricular effort into the discipline of industrial design is important for bridging the gap between education and industry expectations. Select academics and industry professionals will join us in a panel format to share their reactions to the curriculum model as well as to provide insights, experiences, and validations.

SJSU Case Study: Industrial Design + Mechanical engineering Collaboration

The world is changing and becoming more collaborative, and the lines between fields are constantly blurring. Design, business, and engineering in industry do not happen in a vacuum independent of each other. So why would we approach education in these fields as if they do? How do you introduce innovative software features and technologies into a product development process without stifling creativity and innovation? How can we maximize the power of AI and feature-rich software such as Fusion 360 software to help solve problems in design? We explore these questions and more in the San Jose State University classrooms, as we experiment in the SJSU/Autodesk Kreative Kitchen. The Kreative Kitchen is an innovative, multidisciplinary, educational pilot model dedicated to exploring how we can maximize the benefits of diverse fields in a collaborative academic environment that mimics industry.

AI-Driven Industrial Design in AEC: Exploring Robot Retrofitting Applications in Historic Town Heritage Conservation
A cross-industry technology fusion! We used Autodesk Generative Design software to create an adaptive connector bracket for robot-operated 3D scans of ancient structures. ReCap software and Dynamo helped us study traditional construction methods and enrich our restoration efforts. This report covers our process in Autodesk Fusion 360 software, including entering design parameters and extracting constraints from the historical site. It explains how we turned the bracket's requirements into criteria for rapid iteration and selection, quickly finding the best solution. It also explains how ReCap processed robot-collected point cloud data to investigate architectural principles and features of ancient buildings in Southern China. Finally, it describes how Dynamo converted these insights into automated building information modeling (BIM) scripting, bridging historical knowledge with modern technology for efficient restoration practices.

Photo-geometry for Projection Mapping.
In this instructional demo - we will use Autodesk Recap to create a 3d model from a series of photographs, Autodesk Maya to re-topologies that model and generate a UV Map to then use NOTCH VFX to generate real-time content and Disguise to remap that video content back onto the original object using digital projectors. The demonstration object will be chosen as relevant to an industrial design or fabrication process to also show how this technique can be used in creative fabrication. This demonstration will last approx 1 hour.

Machines of Adventure: Using Alias to Create Models for an Art Book
In this class, experienced Alias industrial design software users, concept artists, illustrators, and designers learn the powerful Alias techniques used to create an art book of fantasy vehicles, airplanes, bikes, spaceships, and mysterious expeditions. Power Alias user Michal Jelinek shares his story about how he created the art for the book. He explains how the creative modeling process differs in entertainment versus product design. He also discusses how to capitalize on polygonal modeling expertise in Alias, as well as how to use the Alias dynamic shape modeling tools and hybrid modeling capability. Finally, he shows how to prepare Alias concept models for rapid prototyping.

Alias and VRED Instruction Methodology from Auburn University
In the spring of 2024, the legendary Jeff Smith connected Associate Professor Bush from Auburn University with an OEM partner to explore what it would look like to team a group of graduate industrial design students with a seasoned digital vehicle designer. Through this interaction emerged a five-week section in Alias AutoStudio software and a five-week section in VRED software, using the Auburn instructor's background in surface modeling with the OEM partner's background in SubD and mesh modeling. This proposal compares the CAD instruction methodology that has been implemented at Auburn University for the past three years with the experimental, collaborative approach with the OEM. We will highlight the changes in student outcomes, as well as the implications of knowing SubD/hybrid modeling moving into the design profession.
