Follow us on our journey as we work toward building an owner’s vision into one of the most inventive aquariums in the country. We will show how BIM engineers can successfully work with owners, architects, general contractors, and subcontractors during the preconstruction phase of any project in order to coordinate scheduling and procurement, reduce requests for information, improve construction sequencing, and much more. This couldn’t be possible if BIM Engineers didn't use multiple Autodesk, Inc., products, and we will demonstrate how these products’ interoperability enabled us to successfully coordinate with the entire Project Team from inception to completion. These products combined enabled us to create a construction model that was not only used for coordination of all trades, but was also used to generate constructability drawings for the field. Watch as we demonstrate how to successfully create these drawings, and we’ll also show how a unique collaborative process and Autodesk products can improve any project’s return on investments.

As the horizontal construction world continues to catch up with the all-encompassing contractors, we will once again dive into the use of 3D heavy civil construction models and the workflow associated with them. We will cover the benefits of using a 3D model, starting at the bid and going through construction and lastly as-builts. Shown through the eyes of a contractor, we will share both field and office experiences while displaying project examples. We will discuss creating models for bidding, procuring field data to support 3D models (including unmanned aerial vehicles and laser scanning), using AutoCAD Civil 3D software to build excavation models for quantification and automated machine guidance, modeling to determine means and methods, utilizing the 3D model in the field for stake less layout, and using clash in Navisworks software. We will also cover virtual design coordination with owners and subcontractors, decreased turnaround time on requests for information / change orders, safety benefits, point clouds, and fabrication plans.

The presentation will cover the use of 3D models on a construction site and the workflow that starts at bidding and goes through construction and final as-builts, all from the perspective of a contractor. Professional presenters will share both field and office experiences while displaying project examples. They will discuss importing PDFs, importing CAD files for bidding, using contractor surveying to support 3D models, using AutoCAD Civil 3D software to build excavation models for quantification and automated machine guidance (AMG), modeling to determine means and methods, using the model for collaborative design with owners and subcontractors, using AMG for increased safety, and utilizing the 3D model in the field for layout and the collection of additional as-built data. Other areas we will cover include using clash in Navisworks project review software, decreasing turnaround time on change orders and requests for information, gaining safety benefits, developing fabrication plans from the models, and performing stockpile modeling using an unmanned aerial vehicle.

Construction and engineering professionals get hands-on training on how to transition from a LOD 300 to LOD 350 model for enhanced construction utilization. This lab and panel discussion demonstrates how to take full advantage of Revit Structure software models using parts and assembly tools, rebar, parameter strategies, and advanced families to extend BIM into construction using Navisworks® Manage software to schedule, estimate, and use the Revit Structure model for shop drawings. We discuss the value of the engineering model and potential for contractors to use it in planning, sequencing, animation, location, detailed shop drawings, fabrication, and estimation. This lab features a Tilt-Up construction project example.

On rail infrastructure projects, consultants provide tunnel ring models for entire alignment, created using a two-point adaptive family based on the track center point via Dynamo. But these models lack detailed tunnel features—segmentation and dimple holes. Coordination with stakeholders requires complete tunnel models with segmentation and dimple holes. We must develop this detailed model to accurately place services brackets along the tunnel. The ring comprises eight segments, including a key segment with a varying location. A family of these segments, with a rotation parameter set by the tunnel's center point, is essential. Our process involves deriving the tunnel's center from track center points using geometric translations. Dynamo makes placement points for adaptive components. The angle of rotation is recorded on the site for the key segment in XYZ, and we develop construction model using that data. This construction model aids subcontractor in accurate service modeling.

Collaborative construction methodologies are ever changing as design, trade, and contracting partners develop more-efficient and more-effective ways to deliver projects to customers. As part of bridging the gap to true collaboration, teams need to overcome barriers and find a balance between contracts and true partnership. One large component of working together to design and construct buildings is managing the intelligent model. Traditionally, there are multiple intelligent models in a variety of platforms that each partner creates to execute their design or construction work. This method results in wasteful efforts, as designers and contractors redesign and rework the model for coordination and fabrication for their scope of work. The One Model approach is an integrated design process that eliminates this redundancy and creates a different level of collaboration by utilizing Revit software and the BIM 360 platform.

As roadway construction technology advances, bridging design data to construction requirements becomes critical. Optimizing point codes in digital delivery modeling offers numerous benefits. We'll explore crafting subassemblies to unveil corridor point codes for feature line development and transitions. By employing these subassemblies, we'll demonstrate corridor visualization using point and link code styles for design analysis and surface creation. Additionally, we'll develop tailored code sets for diverse digital delivery needs like IFC, exporting attribute-rich data from corridor codes. Lastly, we'll optimize point code organization for feature lines extraction, aiding survey construction modeling and design verification.

Capitalizing on Revit software for the field is the key to fully implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM) and virtual design and construction (VDC) in the construction industry. By examining some landmark projects—such the Miami All Aboard Station, Hard Rock Hollywood, and other projects—attendees will learn the importance of fully modeling outside conditions, cranes, formwork, and other construction-related activities to understand constructability and how this impacts costs and schedules. Bringing the models to the field does not stop at coordination, and by correctly modeling how work is placed and utilizing parameters, modelers can provide extremely detailed quantities and approaches to the field and estimating at a subcontractor level. This class will also demonstrate the importance of estimators getting involved in the modeling process. Back with examples from landmark projects, the course will show how a model-based takeoff methodology is more accurate and more efficient than are traditional estimation methods. Revit software delivers a range of valuable toolsets for those contractors and subcontractors who want to further enhance their construction modeling workflows and explore opportunities in prefabrication. When coupled with BIM 360 software, Revit provides an integrated solution, letting teams connect design and fabrication with site execution and delivery. This session will cover a detailed workflow on the advantages of Autodesk’s Revit Assembly and Part features (including the Structural Precast Extension) for the development of coordinated shop drawings. Beyond design, attendees will also learn about extending this workflow, taking fabrication models to the field using BIM 360 for quality control and material tracking. With the integration of Revit and BIM 360, we will also explore the benefits this provides in connecting disparate data sources to provide transparency and real-time project control through the use of business intelligence and model-based reporting.

This presentation aims to demonstrate the ease of the Autodesk Construction Cloud setup and what an administrator (Qatar Rail) needs to do in order to set up and manage Autodesk Construction Cloud to address increased requirements and responsibilities, as well as additional interface between each civil design-and-build project and system integrator. We will showcase the process of how Qatar Rail selected the preferred Autodesk Construction Cloud setup option, showing the pros and cons of each. And we will demonstrate management of the megadata within a cloud-based environment. We’ll also examine the establishment of a BIM policy that mandates BIM use on all future projects. And we'll cover the challenges associated with BIM implementation. Furthermore, you’ll learn how BIM can be an enabler for Construction Modeling. And you’ll see how it’s used for the operation and maintenance of Qatar Rail assets.

The MEP industry has been evolving from multiple angles and looks to continue in this direction over the next few years. A key issue to be addressed is the connection between design and construction, and specifically how to increase productivity between design modeling and construction modeling. This gap is already starting to be bridged by some, but for the majority, it continues to be an issue. Industry leader The Hill Group will talk about how they’ve tackled some of these issues on past projects, how owner demand is influencing a change in business practice, and what the industry might need to do to prepare itself for an inevitable restructuring.

Every morning, the PCL Construction team that’s building the 11-acre, 516-room JW Marriott Bonnet Creek hotel in Orlando, Florida, starts with the same routine: reviewing a high-resolution map of the site (captured by one of the firm’s daily drone flights) to effectively plan and coordinate the day’s work. A couple of years ago, using up-to-date drone maps for daily site and logistics planning was unheard of. Now, PCL project teams can’t live without them. This use case is part of a larger trend: drone data, once confined to the VDC team, has become a “must have” resource for entire project teams, owners, and more. In fact, on this JW Marriott project alone, there are more than 50 stakeholders regularly viewing their drone maps and models. In this session, PCL’s JW Marriott project team—Matthew Dodge, project manager; and Kevin Johnson, construction modeling specialist—will share the impact that drone data has had on this project and how other contractors can do the same.

Laser scanning and point clouds are quickly becoming essential tools in the engineering/design/construction workflow. This class will examine a real-world scenario that will show you how to achieve typically needed workflows from within Plant Design Suite 2015 software and Kubit PointSense Plant software. It will also show how to create intelligent piping models, including catalog piping and structural design, tie-in point extraction, clash reporting, isometrics, and equipment all from point clouds. This class will give you a solid foundation for how to turn your laser scanning into accurate construction drawings.

With the advancement in pre-construction technology and enhancements in the Model Coordination product on Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), we can now take a massive step toward delivering fully coordinated construction models. This will ensure the quality of construction and reduce the wastage of construction materials. The key factor in delivering fully coordinated construction models is a closed-loop clash management system that allows stakeholders to identify and address potential clashes early in the project lifecycle. This results in reduced risks of delays and cost overruns, thus increasing project efficiency and enhancing project quality. In this lab, you will learn about automated clash detection using Model Coordination. You will get hands-on experience with the "closed-loop" end-to-end issue management system, supported by notifications so the users can be notified when you create clash issues. Finally, you will learn how to close the loop by resolving the clashes and changing the issue status to reflect the clash resolution.

Most building design projects live in two worlds: everything inside the building, and everything outside the building. The two worlds come together only after an excessive amount of swearing and hours of unnecessary time spent. But does it have to be that way? Absolutely not. Coordinating Revit software and Civil 3D software, even in the cloud, doesn't have to require a degree in theoretical physics, and this session, co-presented by a Revit specialist and a Civil 3D specialist, is where you can learn how. You will gain an understanding of the expectations for each platform and learn how to configure them. With coordinated model locations in place, we'll define effective practices for exchanging data between Revit and Civil 3D through BIM 360 software. Using the full potential of each coordinated design model, you will learn how to assemble your project in the context of its surroundings using InfraWorks software, and you'll learn how to generate a virtual reality (VR) scene.

This class will cover basic use of Dynamo software with Revit software for model information analysis when starting from scratch. The workflow that we'll use can help you understand in a practical way how to analyze your model information. Revit models hold a lot of information and a lot of ways to change it. The practice of modifying everything is also the weak point for construction, cost, and management. Fortunately, Dynamo can help us to review the information, check that everything is coherent with the construction needs, and have some filters that can assure model quality. We'll cover basic Dynamo topics, such as selection, extraction, and lists, and we'll link with Microsoft Excel documents, sort, group, extract and insert parameters, and visualize them on the model. And we'll review some Dynamo examples of scripts used for some projects.
