What was a job of core software developers is getting mainstream every day with easier programming languages (Visual & Text) and more and more engineers finding ways to achieve complex results using automation. Automation thinking for Civil Engineers is a basic level discussion on how to think in Automation terms. This topic covers how we can spot opportunities, how we, designers can ideate and what it takes to become an Automator. It talks about the questions designers should ask themselves, how to structure your automations, how to validate its scalability among other topics.

In this class, we’ll demonstrate how to use automation for transportation, land development, and pipe networks workflows in Civil 3D software through Dynamo and Python. The class will introduce Dynamo for Civil 3D capabilities, focusing on the implementation of computational design for infrastructures. We will cover how to expand the possible workflows through Python scripting to use the AutoCAD and Civil 3D APIs.

We do discuss workflows, but this class focuses mainly on setting up the tools that are needed to perform the workflows.

But what we're talking about is architects and civil engineers playing together, specifically when it comes to coordinating Revit and AutoCAD Civil 3D data on the same project. This class is directed at both Revit and Civil 3D software users. That's right, architects and civil engineers in the same room. We work in both Revit and Civil 3D, showing you proper importing and exporting of data, so it lands in the correct place automatically. We teach you how to ask for the correct data, as well as a good understanding of one another's software. We cover how to create good topo in Revit, and how that compares to topos in Civil 3D. The tools for smooth collaboration exist in both Revit and Civil 3D, and there's just a communication breakdown preventing truly streamlined BIM workflow between the 2 disciplines. This class will demonstrate the unique form of civil engineering that is done at Walt Disney Imagineering and how AutoCAD Civil 3D software has helped to create the complex infrastructures that are a part of Disney's theme parks and resorts. The modeling engines in Civil 3D are taken to the limit to meet the immense design requirements. With drawing data containing over tens of thousands of model objects, built to real-world specs and spanning multiple projects, the “I” in Building Information Modeling (BIM) has taken on a whole new meaning: Intelligence. In this class, we will focus on a project-specific journey and see how the age-old profession of civil engineering uses the capabilities of Civil 3D to meet these unique demands.

The presentation will provide an in-depth discussion of effective practices regarding how to combine foundation designs in Revit Structure Suite software with civil-site designers in AutoCAD Civil 3D software to ultimately collaborate with architects in Revit Architecture software. The discussion will give guidelines on where utility modeling for building should transition from Revit MEP software above grade to AutoCAD Civil 3D software below grade and how to use Navisworks project review software in this review process. Key concept to review will be the difference between local coordinate systems that building designers work in as compared to the state plane coordinate system that civil engineers typically use. The discussion will then consider the new American Institute of Architects' BIM Protocol Exhibit E202 that defines the Level Of Detail (LOD) in models on a scale of 100 to 500. The presenter will demonstrate these LOD concepts with case studies from projects in 3 different project phases: design, construction, and facilities management.

Learn how to reduce time and improve the quality of surface models in Civil 3D software using geographic information system (GIS) data. The Autodesk and Esri partnership has spurred advances in surface modeling that fuel collaboration between civil engineers and GIS professionals. Newly developed tools simplify the processing of triangular irregular network (TIN) surfaces originating from Civil 3D and formation of complementary terrain data sets within ArcGIS Pro. Surface model data propagated into ArcGIS web feature layers then establishes both a system of record and an avenue for two-way synchronization extending into Civil 3D. As large point cloud data sets become ubiquitous in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) community, open-source libraries and software dedicated to manipulating these data sets are valuable tools for civil engineers and those in the geospatial community. For civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, multidisciplinary firms, and many others, the question of primary authoring software can be a complicated one. Should it be Civil 3D software? Should it be Revit software? Or is there a need for both? This industry talk will discuss and evaluate the criteria for how to decide the most appropriate software for a range of project types. We’ll also consider what sort of project may be best served by using both software platforms, and we’ll cover the challenges and some suggestions of best practices involved in executing such a project. Join us as we share what we’ve learned while navigating this intersection of these two platforms.

Civil engineers have used 3D model-based design for over 2 decades, so the line between CADD and BIM is not clear. Using examples drawn from real bridge, tunnel, highway and transit projects, we discuss how to differentiate between CADD and BIM. We find a place for analytical models, introduce terminology, such as level of development (LOD), and identify how goals, processes, products, and applications differ through the project lifecycle. We also make sense of CADD Standards, construction plans, and 3D deliverables in the context of a BIM workflow that manages liability. We document our discussion in a Venn diagram that helps to communicate what BIM means for infrastructure.
