Every major general contractor wants to embrace digital construction in the right way. This class will explain how VINCI Construction France-a general contractor employing 22,000 people in France that started its move to Building Information Modeling (BIM) almost a decade ago-has perfected its preconstruction approach, and how it is bridging the BIM gap to the job site. This course will detail the strategy designed by VINCI to preconstruct Revit models that can be useful for job-site purposes, and how custom tools and interfaces have been developed to ensure the right communication between the BIM preconstruction team and the work-front team. The main goal of this class is to show how digital construction can be a reality, and look at how it affects quality, productivity, and innovation for the industry.

Often a subcontractor or supplier is drawing a system in 3D and then printing off PDFs for review and approval. How can we use these models more effectively to save review time and limit errors such as embed locations or enclosure details. Using PDFs can be time consuming and error prone when coordinating between trades. This workshop will show some tips and tricks for using models for structural steel, concrete, curtain wall, and other trades for shop-drawing review and coordination. These models aren't typically included in the clash detection process like the MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) trades. However, by bringing them into the process, we can coordinate in the office and then easily provide to the field crews via BIM 360 Glue software and BIM 360 Field software, ensuring that the latest information gets out to the field crews for everything from embed placement to anchor bolts to proper enclosure details. Any quality-control items can then be tracked and tied to the model, creating a set of lessons learned for future projects.

"If you want the same result, do the same thing. If you want something different, do something different." These words from the speaker’s leadership hit home when first heard as a young virtual design and construction (VDC) engineer after grinding through the first coordination project. After hitting road blocks with communicating issues in the coordination process, losing information in too many repositories, wasting time running back and forth to the trailer, and not having the data to learn what to do different, the speaker and team have created smarter workflows and processes to better plan, do, check, and perform their efforts.

Encouraged by Autodesk University Las Vegas 2017’s motto to do “More, Better, With Less,” and knowing the alarming numbers of people around the world who still don’t have homes to live in—especially in countries such as Brazil, which unfortunately still struggles with social problems and poverty—this real Brazilian case will show how we can use technology to change the future. This project used Autodesk products such as Revit software (to design and to extract information), Navisworks software (to check collisions and plan the 4D construction sequence), and BIM 360 Field software (to monitor building processes). With a high-level multidisciplinary team, we were able to assemble a house live at the biggest construction fair in Brazil in a total of 23 work hours. With the spare hour, our team decided to have a classic Brazilian BBQ. The house was assembled—not built—in 24 hours, because most of the components had been prebuilt by the industry, much like how a car is assembled.

Drawing Production is a process in which BIM Models should be used to generate drawings from the model including (General Plans, Plan & Profiles, Setting out, X- sections …etc). the current industry focus is always on the upstream Model Authoring process without much attention on what should be generated out of this model. And that’s where the problems start to arise. In this Session, you will learn how to unlock the full potential of Autodesk Civil 3D to tackle most of the drawing production challenges. We will focus on transportation and utilities sheet types and aim to demonstrate how to minimize the drawing production process time by around 90% of its current common status through demonstrating a BIM based approach, new features and workarounds.

In this session, we'll examine how many in the construction industry are moving away from paper and traditional quality assurance, quality control, and collaboration methods in favor of common data environment solutions such as BIM 360 Docs software. We'll cover what exactly BIM 360 Docs software is, and how it works as a cloud-based program and a mobile app. We'll not only look at the benefits, but also at the current drawbacks of working with this workflow. Hear how JE Dunn Construction teamed with Autodesk Consulting utilizing Forge platform-based APIs to develop integration between JE Dunn’s SharePoint-based Dunn Dashboard and BIM 360 Document Management. Learn how the document sync integration has enabled construction documents to be easily accessible to the construction professionals at the jobsite and maintained JE Dunn’s Dunn Dashboard as the single source of truth for all project documents. This BIM 360 Document Management-based integration is built on top of the project automation that was developed for JE Dunn ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) and further has enabled the extension of the firm’s construction-based data and document flows into the construction ecosystem.

Data is spread over different providers, so you often need to around to take advantage of each web service. Using the Forge Data Management API you can access the storage structure, download and upload files from A360 Team, BIM 360 Docs and Fusion Team. And this allows integration with other providers using apps and programming. This class will cover the basics to create your own storage provider integration and show samples with Box, Google Drive and Dropbox.

Do you know where your components are during the construction phase of your project? Will your components be delivered late to the site, posing a risk of late delivery? What do you do if a component has an issue when delivered to the site? Excitech have been working with MACE Group (main contractor) to develop a workflow so the building materials can be tracked during the fabrication, manufacturing, delivery, installation, and commission process. Using Revit design elements, a workflow has been established that firstly goes through BIM 360 Glue software so the coordination and layout of the element can be verified during the preconstruction process. Then the information is linked into BIM 360 Field software where the manufacturing elements can be tracked from procurement through to commissioning. The data can finally round-trip through to the Navisworks platform for a visual representation of the component status.
