In the design industry collaboration is always at the forefront of our minds. How can we better coordinate data between multi-disciplinary teams? What is the data normally isolated by Civil 3D could be linked to a Revit site model? With the integration of Civil 3D and Revit, the gates between multi-disciplinary silos, become freer and more open. Gone are the days of having to import Civil backgrounds into you model and “clean” that data up for use, only to have repeat that process when drawings are revised. By linking Civil 3D directly to Revit, you gain the benefits or a “live” link to seamlessly update data. In this session we will gain an understanding of how to link Civil 3D to Revit, analyze the data from Civil 3D to create specific views, incorporate Revit Site models into existing workflows, recognize the collaboration benefits within multi-disciplinary environment, and how to export Revit data back to Civil 3D to form a complete integration loop.

In this class you will learn how to prepare Civil 3D Data for use in InfraWorks, and InfraWorks Data in Civil 3D. You will learn what Objects translate between each program, and what does not. You will also learn how to get a Civil 3D corridor into InfraWorks for use in your Model.

Managing geotechnical data in Civil 3D software has been a challenge throughout the years. Autodesk has introduced the Geotechnical Modeler extension for Civil 3D 2022. With this free extension you can export subsurface data from gINT or other methods and create CSV files that will import directly into Civil 3D. This data will enable you to display your borehole sticks in plan view or on a profile, and even export them for 3D use in InfraWorks software. We’ll review the workflow of how to manage your data with a local database, then import that data into an existing Civil 3D project. Then we’ll focus on creating stratum surfaces and subsurface profiles from that data. We’ll also review the sample files and the config file, manipulating them to change the styles of our boreholes—including hatch patterns at a certain scale. The end result will be a dynamically linked drawing containing geotechnical data completely compatible with your Civil 3D design.

In this class, you will learn how to connect your Civil 3D models into the Dynamo environment using C# programming language and the Zero Touch interface. Learn how to connect to a running Civil 3D application using the Civil 3D COM API, and create customized nodes for common Civil 3D object types. We will then import the Zero Touch library into Dynamo Studio, where we will apply the new nodes into a Dynamo canvas and extract Civil 3D model data for analysis or construction. Finally, we will investigate how we can transfer data from within Dynamo back into our current Civil 3D model objects. This session is intended for those wishing to extend their Civil 3D customization skills, capitalizing on the power of the Dynamo interface.

Dynamo is already popular with architects and engineers using Revit software to design buildings, but if you’re an engineer who primarily works in the horizontal infrastructure space, Dynamo may be very new to you. In this class, we’ll focus on the Dynamo add-in for Civil 3D 2020. We’ll explore the import of AutoCAD and Civil 3D objects, the types of geometry you can create, and the functions you can apply. Discover the meaning and application behind the terms “nodes,” “connectors,” “code blocks,” and “lists.” Learn how to easily create a visual script to automate a repetitive task in your daily workflow, and how to apply that script to your design. Finally, join the Dynamo open-source community, where you can contribute to improving Dynamo for Civil 3D!

The possibility to make anything can be overwhelming. Sometimes you just need a picture, a plan, or a push in the right direction. If you don’t know where to start in Dynamo for Civil 3D software, but you’re eager to know what can and cannot be easily automated, then this class is for you. In this class, we’ll walk through the specific steps of creating at least three scripts in Dynamo for Civil 3D. These scripts will automate some of the mundane tasks you do in each of your designs. From placing a legend on multiple sheets, changing text to all upper case, turning on and off layers, adjusting line types of your design based on the type of plan sheet you are creating, or inserting trees at a specific interval along an alignment—Dynamo can do it! At the end of this class, you’ll understand the basics, and you’ll have a few time-saving tools to use within your own projects, and the knowledge of how they were created.

Corridors are a crucial aspect of many Civil 3D models, but they can sometimes be time consuming to create, modify, and manage. This class will explore how Dynamo for Civil 3D can be used to improve efficiency in all aspects of corridor design and management. This class will cover workflows for corridor creation, corridor geometry manipulation, subassembly management, quantification, and style management. We'll explore how to use the Python node to interact with corridors using the Civil 3D .NET API, expanding upon the functionality of existing nodes. Learn how to best use Dynamo to streamline your workflows and processes when working with corridors in Civil 3D.

Learn about taking conceptual designs in InfraWorks 360 software and bringing them into AutoCAD Civil 3D software for final design. We’ll take a detailed look at how InfraWorks software models our design, and exactly what form that takes when brought into AutoCAD Civil 3D software. We’ll also cover an example of taking a near-final design in AutoCAD Civil 3D software and bringing it into InfraWorks software for detailed visualization.

This session will provide hands-on instruction in the use of the Grading Optimization extension in Civil 3D software. We'll explore the product features and put the software to use on a commercial/retail development project. The instruction will use many of the included grading objects (i.e., building pads, curbs, drain lines, ponds, and more) to quickly develop a proposed surface, and import the results back to Civil 3D.

In this class, you will learn how Civil 3D software and 3ds Max software are used in conjunction to develop roadway animations and photo simulations. We will go through how corridors are made and how they are brought into 3ds Max for finishing work using Civil View in 3ds Max.

In this class, we will pull back the curtains on the Civil 3D Pipe Network API using C# programming language within Microsoft Visual Studio. Learn how to enhance the design and production capabilities of Civil 3D software's gravity pipe networks. Basic knowledge of Visual Studio, C#, and Civil 3D gravity pipe networks are prerequisites for this class.

Moving from a MicroStation to a Civil 3D platform is a shift. We will review the data presented to senior leadership, arming them with information to make the switch. Not all projects are equal; hence, we will discuss the types of projects that are suitable for the change. Equally, teaching data management, BIM principles, and Civil 3D is key to a successful platform migration. We will cover the pedagogical theory and techniques used to empower users with new skills. In this class, you’ll learn how to use Civil 3D software and Dynamo to model and analyze roadway drainage culverts. Learn how to create dynamic 3D culvert models by using information directly from your Civil 3D design corridor, using a combination of standard Dynamo nodes and custom Python scripts to analyze and optimize the desired culvert size. Finally, we’ll investigate how to take the Dynamo 3D model back into Civil 3D and Revit software for documentation purposes. This session is intended for those wishing to begin their Civil 3D and Dynamo automation journey using the power of the Dynamo interface.

This year marks the first anniversary of Collaboration for Civil 3D on BIM 360 software. During this roundtable discussion, the Civil 3D community will share ideas and techniques for a smooth transition to BIM 360 so that others may benefit from the successes and failures of the past year. You will have the opportunity to ask direct and specific questions to those who have embraced the platform, and hear what impact the global pandemic of COVID-19 has had on collaboration efforts. You will also have an opportunity to provide the ideas or workflows you discovered. The goal is to have seasoned Collaboration for Civil 3D users share their successes, failures, knowledge, and advice with those that have not yet made the transition or are considering integrating Collaboration for Civil 3D into their firms.

In an early design phase, a parametric Civil 3D model of a tunnel was setup using the subassembly composer. Where Civil 3D is strong in linear oriented design, Revit is strong in placing object-oriented elements. With the CivilConnection package for Dynamo it is possible to setup and change a Revit model based on the corridor and feature lines from the civil 3D model. Where the Civil 3D Model follows the curved alignment as much as possible, it is necessary to work towards a more implementation-ready model in Revit during designing. We constantly look for optimizations. Without computational modeling, quickly processing new design insights is a time-consuming job and no longer of this time.
