Expanding Render Capacity without Extra Cost

Expanding Render Capacity without Extra Cost

Customer challenge

Rising Sun Pictures (RSP), based in South Australia, is an award-winning visual effects studio. Known for its incredible VFX work, RSP has produced groundbreaking work for more than 150 Hollywood blockbusters and series productions including some of the most popular and awarded films of the past two decades. RSP has been using Arnold as its primary production renderer. RSP owns a combination of Arnold and traditional RLM licenses. Due to increased project demand, RSP needed a scalable solution.

Project goals

The priority project goals were identified as follows: 1) Expand render capacity, and 2) Identify areas within the current production workflow where cost-saving practices could be implemented without loss of operational efficiency.

Solution

Following initial consultations to review RSP’s business needs and current status, STORM FX quickly came up with a solution to increase rendering capacity at no extra cost by keeping the traditional RLM licenses, and switching their Maya licenses to the Autodesk Media & Entertainment Collection, which includes Maya, 3ds Max, MotionBuilder, Mudbox and 5 Arnold licenses with each Collection subscription. This allowed RSP to expand their Arnold footprint without extra cost or a loss of efficiency.

Business outcome

STORM FX managed to deliver an optimal solution that expands RSP’s render capacity, enabling more artists to work on the same project and creatively saving money.

Conclusion

STORM FX’s deep knowledge on all aspects of Autodesk products and the customer’s background was the key to the success of this project.

Scale up Shotgun Usage at a Reduced Cost

Flying Bark Productions is an internationally recognised Australian animation studio. Known for its high-quality children’s animated entertainment productions, Flying Bark has produced some of the world’s most popular films and TV shows like Maya the Bee, Blinky Bill, 100% Wolf, and much more. With hundreds of artists working collaboratively on multiple projects at the same time, Flying Bark has been using Autodesk Shotgun as their production management tool to allocate tasks, track progress and deadlines, share assets and review. It is an invaluable tool for the studio. When Shotgun was first implemented, the studio chose the monthly subscription option and it was transacted in US dollars via their credit card. While they’re pleased with the software, the extra fees associated with credit card and foreign exchange rates were proven to be costly. With more jobs and artists onboard, they were looking at expanding the usage of Shotgun and reducing the current subscription cost.

Design Centre Enmore Streamlines Shot and Project Management with Autodesk Shotgun

Established in 1994 in the inner-city suburb of Enmore, the award-winning TAFE NSW Design Centre Enmore (DCE) is one of Australia’s leading design schools. With facilities that include purpose-built exhibition spaces, studios and professional workshops, DCE has produced some extraordinary Australian and International creative talents in the past 27 years. DCE has a great reputation for industry and business partnerships. As well as their internal projects for the 3D art and animation curriculum, Bachelor students get to work on real projects producing films and content for external 3rd party clients such as studios and art houses. With a team of students, staff and clients all needing to work together on collaborative projects, a shot/project management tool was identified as the best way forward to enable effective team management.
