Design Centre Enmore Streamlines Shot and Project Management with Autodesk Shotgun

Design Centre Enmore Streamlines Shot and Project Management with Autodesk Shotgun

Customer challenge

Established in 1994 in the inner-city suburb of Enmore, the award-winning TAFE NSW Design Centre Enmore (DCE) is one of Australia’s leading design schools. With facilities that include purpose-built exhibition spaces, studios and professional workshops, DCE has produced some extraordinary Australian and International creative talents in the past 27 years. DCE has a great reputation for industry and business partnerships. As well as their internal projects for the 3D art and animation curriculum, Bachelor students get to work on real projects producing films and content for external 3rd party clients such as studios and art houses. With a team of students, staff and clients all needing to work together on collaborative projects, a shot/project management tool was identified as the best way forward to enable effective team management.

Project goals

DCE had the following key goals in mind: 1) Improve communication between students and staff on workflow, scheduling and status of projects associated with their studies 2) Improve communication with 3rd party external clients and enable feedback to the design team 3) Ensure that students are industry-ready upon completion of their studies in all aspects of production management

Solution

After initially going down the path of teaching staff to develop their own internal project management system, DCE engaged industry partners to discover what tools were being used in the commercial Film and Television industry. This was where Autodesk Shotgun came to their attention. It’s out of the box capability, along with its ability to be customised and integrated, was a key factor in its selection as the tool of choice. STORM FX has served the creative education industry for over 25 years. Supporting and bridging the gap from classroom to studio for graduates has always been a key focus for the team at STORM FX. That along with our commercial industry experience, workflow and technology expertise is what DCE have valued throughout what has been a long-term relationship.

Business outcome

Soon after Autodesk Shotgun was deployed, DCE found tremendous success in using the toolset to manage the whole production workflow. It enables their teams to work collaboratively, keep track of the status and progress of artists and assets, and communicate and manage feedback with all stakeholders. This management of workflows and processes with the Shotgun environment at DCE mirrors the experience students will encounter in real-world production studios and prepares them for the workforce. With each project, DCE improves their workflow and efficiency, via the use of templates within Shotgun.

Conclusion

“Our experience with STORM FX has only ever been positive. They provide the highest-quality service from purchase to implementation and support, ensuring our software, hardware, and pipelines are robust and meet current industry requirements. We would recommend STORM FX to others who require software and hardware solutions for the film, VFX and games industry. We look forward to doing business with STORM FX for years to come.” -- Vincent Rossini, Course Coordinator | Head Teacher 3D Art and Animation | Concept Art TAFE NSW Design Centre Enmore

Scale up Shotgun Usage at a Reduced Cost

Flying Bark Productions is an internationally recognised Australian animation studio. Known for its high-quality children’s animated entertainment productions, Flying Bark has produced some of the world’s most popular films and TV shows like Maya the Bee, Blinky Bill, 100% Wolf, and much more. With hundreds of artists working collaboratively on multiple projects at the same time, Flying Bark has been using Autodesk Shotgun as their production management tool to allocate tasks, track progress and deadlines, share assets and review. It is an invaluable tool for the studio. When Shotgun was first implemented, the studio chose the monthly subscription option and it was transacted in US dollars via their credit card. While they’re pleased with the software, the extra fees associated with credit card and foreign exchange rates were proven to be costly. With more jobs and artists onboard, they were looking at expanding the usage of Shotgun and reducing the current subscription cost.
