Autodesk’s MSI V2 for Fusion boosts sustainable design with precise material overrides, hybrid process analysis, custom materials, and easy CSV exports, helping designers assess carbon impact.
MSI add-on for Fusion
At Autodesk, we’re committed to empowering designers with tools that make sustainability an integral part of the design process. The Manufacturing Sustainability Insights (MSI) add-on for Fusion has been instrumental in this journey, providing real-time carbon impact assessments directly within the design environment. With the release of MSI V2, we’ve introduced several enhancements to further support sustainable design decisions.
- Enhanced Stock Material Overrides
In MSI V2, users can now specify the exact stock material dimensions for their projects. Whether working with CNC machining or additive manufacturing, this feature ensures accurate calculations of material usage, waste, and carbon emissions. By selecting the precise volume or billet size, designers can achieve more precise data and a clearer picture of their project’s environmental impact.

- Hybrid Manufacturing Process Analysis
Recognizing the diverse manufacturing methods employed in modern design, MSI V2 supports a hybrid approach for additive manufacturing processes. Designers can select a body or volume for additive methods, accounting for near-net shape printing and subsequent post-machining required to achieve tight tolerances. This hybrid calculation integrates both additive and subtractive processes, offering a comprehensive view of the manufacturing impact.
- Expanded Material Insights
MSI V2 introduces custom material overrides, allowing users to input their own materials with specific carbon footprint data and density values. By selecting the closest similar material from the existing library, MSI maintains accurate processing parameters while offering flexibility across different manufacturing scenarios. This enhancement empowers designers to tailor MSI’s calculations to their unique material needs, resulting in more accurate and personalized sustainability insights.

- Streamlined Data Export Options
To facilitate the integration of sustainability data into broader workflows, MSI V2 offers two streamlined export options. Users can export the entire body history as a CSV file, providing a detailed, timestamped record of every design decision, manufacturing process, and associated carbon footprint. Alternatively, exporting an entire assembly as a CSV captures the most recently saved calculations for each component. These options simplify the process of generating charts and comprehensive impact reports, enhancing the usability and flexibility of MSI.
