This class will cover the use of Revit software and Point Layout software in construction field layout. We will examine the history of theodolites and the growing use of robotic total stations. We will discuss the process involved in field layout, including control points, resections, offsets, and so on, and how we use them on our construction projects. Learn how to best adopt Autodesk's Point Layout plug-in for Revit software, AutoCAD software, and BIM 360 software. Hear about a general contractor's lessons learned from using the software and difficulties that arise out in the field-from working with civil engineer's files to working with several different robotic total stations on one site. Attendees will learn how to create a proper workflow using naming and numbering standards set forth by the field, and how to ensure a streamlined approach for importing and exporting points to their robotic total stations. We'll explore how to work with real-world coordinates as well as create our own, and we'll look at the best way to track the coordinate system across a project's lifecycle. We'll also learn how to approach difficult projects that encompass large sites, and how to maintain vertical control on high-rise projects.

This class will explore the fundamentals of Point Layout software and how to manage 3D points in the field with a simple workflow. The class will start with an overview of the process and the basic tools and features involved. Then we will take a deep dive into operating Point Layout software. Next the class will give step-by-step instructions for using Robotic Total Station hardware to capture points in the field and bring them back to the model. Lastly, the presenter will discuss findings and lessons learned regarding implementation of Robotic Quality Control.

This class will be delivered by Topcon Corporation and a European BIM 360 software customer and will show the impact of using Point Layout software and BIM 360 tools combined with Topcon's LN-100 Layout Navigator to achieve improved efficiencies for integrated construction layout and as-built validation. The project was defined as part of the Topcon/Autodesk, Inc., BIM Implementation program, and will demonstrate new workflows using Revit software, Navisworks software, and Point Layout software, and subsequent use of BIM 360 Layout software on a connected iPad. Why model as-built conditions when you can work directly with a high-resolution point cloud? In this very hands-on class we will stake out the foundations for a new addition to our Autodesk University (AU) classroom using a remarkably easy, cloud-enabled workflow. First, participants will import a point cloud of our AU classroom into Navisworks Manage software. We will then use Point Layout software to place points on a number of modeled objects that we intend to stake out as part of a small classroom renovation. The model will be shared with the field using BIM 360 Glue cloud service. Finally, we will connect the BIM 360 Layout iPad application to a robotic total station to enable field users to stake out and verify the exact position of the points. All of this will happen using a contextual model of our surroundings.

This class will focus on one of the major issues that the Building Information Modeling (BIM) / virtual design and construction industry faces today: the use of the 3D models in the field. Attendees will learn the process of how to create a field-ready model that would give them the ability to extract information directly from the model to be used in the field, contrary to a designer’s model, whose information if tailored to the production of construction documents drawings. What if we—Autodesk, Inc.—would use our own technologies for our own needs? In this class we will show you how we applied interesting workflows involving the following software: ReCap software, Revit software, BIM 360 Glue software, BIM 360 Layout software, and Point Layout to retrofit the Autodesk Paris office. After having generated a 3D model in Revit software based on point clouds reflecting existing conditions that we got from 3D scans, we made a retrofit proposal and used BIM 360 Layout software to stake out data into the field with a robotic total station. As a general contractor, quality control of building layout and verification is necessary to minimize the risk of rework and additional costs or schedule delays. The Meisi Lake City Island is the world’s largest twin-helix steel structure. It is very difficult to install elements onto the site precisely with traditional methods. Working with BIM 360 Glue software and Point Layout software, users can generate the set points from Building Information Modeling (BIM) models directly, laying out the data with the total station automatically. The class will show the best practice to set the points to space elements, and run the site survey with a standards procedure. We'll capture the physical condition to ensure designs are accurate and constructible by transferring our designs back into the physical world. First, we'll cover the digitization of the physical condition. We'll fully explore the laser-scanning process using the Leica BLK360 and ReCap Mobile software. Then, we'll learn how to use that data efficiently in Autodesk design environments such as AutoCAD Civil 3D software, Revit software, and Navisworks software. We'll collaborate our designs with the field using multiple digital approaches such as PDF, DXF, and BIM 360 Glue software. Finally, we'll transfer our digital designs back into the real world using the Leica iCon Robotic Total station, which we'll feed data from simple DXFs and outputs from Point Layout software, or we'll control it directly by BIM 360 Glue software.
