What are the benefits of the integration between BIM (Building Information Modeling) and geographic information system (GIS) in infrastructure facility management? This class will demonstrate how combined usage of Esri GIS data and tools and the as-built intelligent models enables your organization to do the following: monitor the entire railway or road integrating the intelligent model into the environment. The use of GIS data like geological surveys, interferometric data, and historical data regarding hydrogeological risks can let us prevent infrastructure damages; plan preventive and corrective maintenance merging data from intelligent models and GIS information, for example, choosing the optimal route to reach the point of interest; choose optimal solutions that respect the environment by exploiting the functionality of specific tools (for example, solar exposure and irradiation); and communicate effectively with the team distributed throughout the territory.

For many within the oil and gas sector, being able to track and store asset data is paramount in calculating and verifying the maximum operating pressures (MOP) of pipeline infrastructure. This class defines how AutoCAD Plant 3D software can be used to build a facility model to house specific asset data and then use that data to calculate MOP information for a given segment of the facility piping or for the facility as a whole. This data set can then be used for regulatory audits and compliance assurance. Once a site model has been completed, it can then be used for future design changes and infrastructure management.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is a state agency responsible for more than 550 miles of highway. As design and construction projects increase in complexity, the Commission faces multiple challenges with data management and variations in project deliverables. With advancing technology, their final goal is to implement digital models as a requirement for project bidding. In congruence with current challenges and goals, they partnered with Microdesk to integrate organization standards and initiate the process of building intelligent 3D model designs using Civil 3D software. The solutions included creating master files of all 550+ miles of highway, CAD/BIM standards for project deliverables, and development of intelligent modeling workflows for Corridors, Drainage, and ROW, all with intelligence that is used to feed geographic information systems (GIS) and asset management systems. These solutions provided a reduction in rework, easier access to data, and an integrated system between departments.

Globally, Architecture, Engineering and Consulting (AEC) firms are being asked to conform to mandates for the use of risk-based triple bottom line (TBL) analysis into design decisions starting in the conceptual planning stage. There is an awareness that infrastructure serves the public good and that lowest cost solutions are not sustainable, resilient, or adding to the quality of life of our society. The objective of infrastructure proponents in imposing TBL mandates is to shift from the lowest cost approach to a highest sustainable return on investment approach. The ability to monetize the public benefits of infrastructure via a triple bottom line economic assessment means that designs can be vetted more quickly, stakeholder push-back is reduced, and there is faster approval for the building of more sustainable and resilient infrastructure. The only way to meet this demand today, and for future generations, is to invest heavily in the UK's rail infrastructure. However, in today’s economic climate, rail infrastructure owners have to spend available capital wisely and ensure better outcomes, based on quality design and construction. This class looks at how UK rail infrastructure owners are adopting Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a key enabler to making informed business decisions throughout the life of the asset, based on accurate, complete, and unambiguous information. To achieve this, they are developing standardized processes and providing client leadership for their supply chain to build integrated teams with the capability and capacity to deliver their requirements.

This lecture will cover the process of creating striking videos designed to communicate complex infrastructure projects within a Building Information Modeling (BIM) pipeline. The year is 2021, and BIM is steadily becoming the norm in the industry. While Building projects have welcomed BIM, there still is a lot to explore when it comes to Infrastructure projects in India, especially in the case of higher levels of details (LOD) model requirements. In this talk, we will look at some case studies from large Indian construction projects where Autodesk tools were successfully utilized for taking BIM to a new level, with construction and fabrication workflows in mind. Additionally, aspects of modern, cloud-based project management using tools from Autodesk Construction Cloud shall be discussed and how the data within the models can be connected to other applications by leveraging the power of Autodesk Forge platform will be covered.

Due to their nature, rail infrastructure projects greatly benefit from the adoption of workflows based on intelligent models and point clouds to allow off-site analyses without the need of the physical presence on the field. FSTechnology, a division of the Italian Railways, set up this workflow based on an integration of Autodesk software—including Autodesk Construction Cloud, Revit software, and Civil 3D software—with Esri ArcGIS GeoBIM. We combined CAD, building information modeling (BIM), point clouds, and orthophotos with geographic information system (GIS) and game engine technologies and added the construction program in a browser-based 4D solution with issue tracking. This is not only intended to monitor the progress of the physical works being executed, but also to achieve better control during the maintenance phase of the railways. All these combined and advanced technologies help us to monitor the most-critical infrastructures like viaducts and bridges, and factors of environmental interest and relevance, supported by artificial intelligence.

This session will provide an overview of 2 new Stormwater Modeling Solutions—Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) and AutoCASE software—that will help civil engineers and landscape architects design for the future. For decades cities drained stormwater with sewers, but these systems are fraught with pollution and flooding issues. In response cities have embraced a new “green infrastructure” approach to managing stormwater—partnering with developers to install absorptive rain gardens and green roofs to harvest water, filter pollutants, and provide a host of other social and environmental benefits. Autodesk, Inc., and its partner Impact Infrastructure have introduced these solutions to support this revolution. As green infrastructure is still a relatively new concept, GSI and AutoCASE software eliminate the learning curve by providing an easy way to design these techniques and analyze their benefits.
