However, the Federal Highway Administration is engaging highway owners in the United States to help them adopt 3D modeling as a standard business practice through an 'Every Day Counts 2' initiative. Highways owners leading the charge are releasing 3D data to contractors prebid for use in estimating and planning construction. This data usually takes the form of 3D linestrings and LandXML. This lab is for contractors who want to create a subassembly that will work with the 2D or 3D linestrings to build an AMG-ready roadway model that will output surfaces for earthwork, fine grading, and paving.

Unfortunately, owners rarely volunteer data that contractors need. This class will discuss information that contractors need in order to estimate, plan, and ultimately lay out and construct designs. We will look at the processes of interacting with designs in 3D to plan construction means and methods, building models to create the data needed for AMG, and being sure that the ground truth and site control network has the necessary coverage to support a robust site calibration. Participants will leave with a checklist of the information that they should request from the owner in order to be sure that they have all the data they need. This is a workflow-oriented class that provides context to the way that contractors consume design data. We will identify software tools with examples, but they will not be the primary focus.

This class will discuss and demonstrate the new features and tools in Revit 2015 software that enable structural engineers to create far more accurate physical models. Whether the intent of the model is comprehensive design or as-built conditions, the new features in Revit 2015 software greatly enhance the user's ability to achieve greater precision and accuracy. This class will cover these many new features, from fine-tuning the ends of framing members to controlling the joining of members. Intended for structural engineers, this class covers an integrated process for the rapid analysis of complete concrete buildings and the detailed design of concrete floor and foundation systems modeled in Autodesk Revit Structure software. We will demonstrate a workflow through a step-by-step process of extracting concrete building information from a Revit model, creating a 3D finite element model of the building, and generating structural analysis results—all within minutes and without having to first fine-tune an analytical model. Analysis results include member forces, floor system deflections, building modal vibration responses, and load takedowns. This process saves time and gives engineers an easy method for quickly checking the structural response of concrete models. The class will also cover options that are available to carry out detailed design of the concrete floor and foundation systems of any building. We will use the latest concrete building design software from ADAPT and Revit Structure in this class.

InfraWorks software has grown from being a 3D visualization tool used to help win bids, to a core tool used throughout a project's lifecycle. It's now a powerful software system that enables the civil designer to take a proposal in InfraWorks software and run with it to AutoCAD Civil 3D software. Gone are the days of creating preliminary drawings just to have to create the final design from a blank sheet. InfraWorks software will run the first leg of the race and then hand off the baton to AutoCAD Civil 3D software, which will complete the next leg of the race. This lab will walk attendees through the process of creating a design proposal in InfraWorks software, starting with a base map and then adding intersecting design roads. From there we will create points of vertical intersection (PVIs) for each road, add widenings, adjust curb returns for typical vehicle types, and add turn lanes in the intersection. We will then export the data out and bring it into AutoCAD Civil 3D software where we can fine-tune it and complete the rest of the project.
