With that in mind, the democratization of reality capture has the potential to change the way we design and engineer buildings and structures because it enables us to start our design process with something that already exists in the real world. In this class, our panel elaborates on this concept and discusses how advances in reality capture can be an agent of change in the Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflow in architecture, engineering, and construction.

This class shares a project that was completed for investigative engineering purposes—not for building design. The original goal of this project was to generate a visual aid of an engineering failure to be used as part of an expert witness report; however, the project evolved into much more. The families and corresponding model that were created incorporated structural engineering such that the model not only provided a visual aid to show deflection of roof members due to ponding water, but actually calculated the amount of deflection that could be expected due to a given amount of rain. We cover how these families (1 structural framing family and 1 adaptive component) and the model were created, as well as the lessons learned after completing such a project.

This class presents a case study of the design of the new Casement Park stadium in West Belfast, Ireland. Located on a tight site, this new Gaelic Athletics site posed numerous design challenges. We explore the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) throughout the MEP and structural design of this project, with particular focus on how the integrated design team used the entire Building Design Suite to benefit all parties. The engineering models were linked to Vico Office for 5D and to Navisworks® for the 4D construction planning. Structural analysis was assisted by links to Robot™ Structural Analysis, and the model was used for lighting analysis and people flow modeling. These workflows facilitated a more efficient design process for all parties. This class also looks at anticipated future directions for workflows that will improve the design process.

Contemporary shifts in technology and environmental concerns are changing the circumstances of building performance. Integrated teams that employ interdisciplinary design and construction personnel are responding to this changed set of conditions. The foundation of interdisciplinary architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) practices begins with the education of the next generation of AEC practitioners. In this class, we will discuss how students engaged in an iterative design and learning process build knowledge and communication skills toward an integrated design-build studio. This integrated design-build studio uses a series of assignments housed in dedicated design labs where students solve realistic design problems. Faculty-implemented Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies and established ecological accounting methods increase interaction and innovation in the interdisciplinary design-build studio.

This class will demonstrate a workflow where the 3D intelligent model in Revit software serves as a central hub for setting up the analysis and design of buildings in construction engineering. The analytical model in Revit is enhanced with additional properties beyond the already existing analytical properties; the analysis and the design of members is controlled and organized directly within Revit. We are also going to demonstrate how different analysis variants can be set up within different views, like setting up a 3D model for dynamic analysis, separated 2D slab models for calculating the vertical load transfer, or local models for detailed analysis. As all this information is stored within the Revit database, consistency is ensured, structural information can be combined with other data in the intelligent model, and all information can be shared with others via Collaboration for Revit and BIM 360 software.

A transformation of an organization's legacy engineering design systems first requires a vision. This class will discuss the vision of using Building Information Modeling (BIM) for 3D intelligent design to transform San Diego Gas & Electric's transmission and substation engineering design and construction process. The transformation includes the implementation of a number of Autodesk, Inc., Solutions in an integrated mosaic of engineering design workflows. We start with conceptual design using InfraWorks software. We will follow this with detailed design and analysis with AutoCAD Civil 3D software, Inventor software, AutoCAD Electrical software, and Substation Design Solution software. A fundamental concept is the adoption of 3D model components for engineering design standardization and construction standards publishing and training. The implementation of BIM 360 software for construction quality assurance / quality control management will complete the transformation. We will discuss a strategic 3-year plan, and we will demonstrate visuals that are being used to convey the vision and build consensus across the organization.

But with the technology available today, we can reduce this environmental impact. Whether it is eliminating wastage, to minimizing embodied carbon, we have the means to reduce both short and long term environmental impacts and make structural design and engineering sustainable for our planet. This class focuses on the technologies available to structural designers and engineers today to work on connected and collaborative workflows and reduce waste, optimize material use, and make decisions to minimize embodied carbon. This class also looks at one of the top examples of using alternate Structural materials in a commercial building, heavily reducing the environmental footprint of production and manufacturing.

A major gas utility client recognized the benefits of 3D design and engaged Autodesk consulting to develop a strategy and solution to replace their existing 2D CAD tools. The project introduces Building Information Modeling (BIM) for pipeline engineering design with an agile implementation plan to accelerate adoption. The recommended solution used Plant Design Suite, including AutoCAD® P&ID software and AutoCAD® Structural Detailing software, in combination with AutoCAD® Electrical software, AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software, and Vault software to completely replace the existing systems and provide significant productivity improvements. Design-driven modeling is a common occurrence in the engineering world, but seldom is this process adopted or taken advantage of downstream in Revit software for producing detailed constructible models—which is surprising considering the age of Building Information Modeling (BIM). By simply transferring (or manually adding) intelligent Finite Element Meshing (FEM) results data from your chosen design software to your Revit software model (better: analytical model), you begin to open a world of new possibilities. For instance, you can automatically generate 3D reinforcement based on the actual “design and loads” information now held in the Revit software analytical model. Autonomous construction assembly and 3D printing of concrete are becoming promising technologies for building structures in the near future. However, such technologies require design professionals to optimize the building design for constructability constraints imposed by the robots and 3D-printed material parameters, in addition to traditional design criteria. Recent advances in generative design showcase promising potential to use BIM (Building Information Modeling) for optimizing the building design for multiple objectives. Pennsylvania State University participated in the NASA 3D-Printed Habitat challenge (for Mars), which had a virtual construction level focusing on using BIM for the design of a Martian habitat, and an actual construction level focusing on the autonomous construction of a subscaled version of the design. This class will demonstrate the underlying BIM process that our team developed to identify the optimal design and perform 4D simulation of the robotic construction process.
