Laser scanning is nothing new. The tools have been around for years now, but the spread of incomplete knowledge about the technology has created a stigma that devalues its true capabilities. As with any “new” piece of technology, the value is limited by the implementation and workflow more than the tool itself. This class will provide five examples of uses demonstrated on projects this past year. The focus will be on practicality—where time and labor are often short on construction sites—and simplicity. Whether we want to determine the plumbness of a wall, or the flatness of a slab, or we want to back check as-builts of brick ledges, tie utilities into an existing building, or create a template of a repetitive room for quick modeling and coordination purposes, this class will explore what it takes and what we got from it—unfiltered.

This class will show you how to get the most out of the powerful graphic features of Autodesk Revit software and incorporate all of the exiting new features in Revit 2013. You will learn valuable tips and tricks and time-proven visualization techniques to make your drawings look great. You will learn how to enhance non-rendered and rendered views with out-of-the-box advanced graphic techniques, how to improve the trees and plants used in Revit for non-rendered views, how to add photo backgrounds to renderings using a unique overlay approach, how to add a fully controllable gradient color background behind multiple views, as well as tips for improving interior and exterior rendered views. And finally, you will learn how to use old-world hand drafting techniques to add visual clarity and make your construction documents communicate and look better. Techniques include poche and surface shading patterns, profiling, transparency, and toning to create graphical layering and sheet layout.

This class will explore the implementation of an efficient workflow for 3D scanning of large plants. From laser scanning at the field until a point cloud, which can be combined with a 2D layout and 3D models, our scan projects count regularly more than 100 scans. After the scans are taken, the scans are removed from noise and then divided in layers according to the flow sheet. The buildings are also on a separate layer and divided into roof, walls, and floor. These scans are then combined in Navisworks software with a 3D model of a new line generated at our company. The 3D models are made with Inventor software. A 2D layout, which we receive from the customer, is also attached. This workflow has been improved on a lot since the start, and this is what we want to teach in this class. Recently we purchased a drone to capture photos at places that are not reachable for our scanner (for example, ducting on a roof). A 3D point cloud can then be derived from those photos and combined with the laser scan point cloud This session features ReCap, Inventor Professional, and Navisworks Manage.

Parameters and the valuable data they contain make up one of the more powerful functions at the core of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Revit-based software products. In this class, we cover parameters and their many uses in Revit in detail. This information is of special interest to MEP engineers and users who will learn how working with parameters in Revit MEP affects project workflow, construction documentation, and the transfer of valuable data.

Today, dedicated 3D visualization is a common practice in medium-to-large architecture and design firms. Inherent to its in-house nature, the specialization particularly focuses on supporting projects iteratively through the design process. For those of us who use 3D as a key tool for validating design decisions quickly and interactively, we see the design process at the center of the 3D artist’s workflow. This class will guide Autodesk 3ds Max software users through the steps involved in creating a proven 3D workflow that takes advantage of linking capabilities of Autodesk Revit software models inside 3ds Max. You will learn useful practices and tips and tricks that facilitate design exploration and subsequent production-level design visualization.

Renovation work is challenging when you’re trying to capture all the necessary details via hand sketches and pictures to complete the new work with as little field conflicts as possible. This is where the laser scanning of existing spaces is best utilized. Laser scanning enables the design and construction teams to collect 3D color images that, when assembled using ReCap software into a single file, enable users to "walk-through" the 3D space as though they were actually in the space in person. Users are able to navigate through the spaces as well as take relevant dimensions without ever having to get on a ladder or even leave their desks. Laser scanning saves time and provides additional levels of detail that pictures alone can't achieve. This roundtable will discuss how companies are currently utilizing point cloud data along with best workflows to maximize the value provided, along with industry trends. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has adopted a just-in-time laser-scanning protocol for the Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal One (EWR T1) Redevelopment project—a 33-gate, innovative terminal that is part of the largest design-build project of New Jersey’s history. The construction team of Tutor Perini / Parsons, JV is continually scanning all of the construction as it happens, from the foundations through to the finished product, ensuring that nothing is missed as the building progresses. EWR T1 is a fantastic case study to show how we’re scanning on such an aggressive schedule, combined with working on a site of more than 1 million square feet. This class will cover our laser-scanning execution plan, including: laser-scanner technical specifications, PC hardware specs, scan data and deliverable management, advanced registration techniques, location of scan setups and targets, DIY target fabrication, survey control application, and much more.

Advanced composite materials are replacing more and more metal components in a variety of industries, most notably, the aerospace industry. While there are many benefits to using composite materials, there are also inherent challenges when working with composite materials. Composite structures are often formed into complex organic shapes, and they're subject to tighter tolerancing and accuracy requirements than is a similar component made from plastic or another material. This creates the need for highly accurate, often complex mold tools and patterns to be machined. PowerMill software and PowerShape software are uniquely suited for rapidly producing high-quality composite tooling, as we'll demonstrate in this course. Another significant manufacturing challenge is machining the completed composite piece. Companies often employ the use of highly complex and expensive fixtures in attempts to accurately align and set up the part for machining while minimizing the time they have in non-productive, manual setup processes. This course will demonstrate how PowerInspect software can make possible the use of simple, inexpensive work holding while increasing accuracy and repeatability of the part setup. This tool can also be used to verify the machining operations before the part is moved from the machine, making any required rework much faster and simpler, and significantly reducing the common bottleneck at the quality department.

This class will show you how to use Google Earth™ to import GIS information using AutoCAD® Civil 3D® and Autodesk® Revit® software. Autodesk Revit and Autodesk® Ecotect® Analysis software will be used to properly analyze, place, and orient the design of the building. Autodesk® Revit® MEP and Autodesk® Revit® Structure software will be used to design the energy analysis and cost analysis for the class. Upon completion of any structural-related building within Autodesk Revit, an energy analysis template will be used to track all electrical and heating costs for the owner’s operational use. A second template will dictate the cost of building construction using Autodesk Revit and Autodesk® Navisworks® software. Upon completion of the Revit 3D model and cost analysis templates, Autodesk Navisworks will be used to simulate the IDP construction process. The audience will see documentation on how 3D IDP is integrated, from the Civil GIS phase to the construction and bidding phase.
