Robots are the most univeral machines in terms of manufacturing. At the cost of being harder to configure / use / program. As the CAM tools such as Fusion360 are improving on a regular basis, the potential to use robots in the machining world is steadly growing. The initially published postprocessor for KUKA (KRL - kuka robot language) is a first step to bring the power of fusion to a milling robot. Based on that post, I developed and tested a postprocessor for milling applications. Since robots are intrinsicly prone to vibrations, all cutting path should be as smooth as possible. This is achived by bypassing the regular motion planning algorithm in the kuka contol. The results are very promising.

At Autodesk University 2018, the speaker successfully delivered 101 tips in 90 minutes. This year, we’re changing it up by starting with a blank canvas and building up a design from scratch, ending with documentation and manufacturing tips and tricks. Sketching, modeling, assemblies, third-party CAD models, generative-designed parts, sheet metal, and CAM will be part of the workflow. Everyone loves a quick-fire class full of productivity and power-user tips and tricks, and this class will deliver on that with context. Autodesk Generative Design in Fusion 360 software has been a fast-moving train for more than a year. In this session, the Product Team would like to review the solution thus far and provide insight into our future development plans. This will be an opportunity to provide feedback on our plans, as well as share input on opportunities where you see generative design playing a role in your design-to-make workflows.

The goal of the engineering process is to strike the right balance of performance and cost to produce. One of the primary goals of Autodesk Generative Design in Fusion 360 software is to support the design exploration of the solution space for complex engineering problems with this challenge in mind. This exploration can come in the form of geometry requirements, manufacturing process, and materials. With a large number of potential solutions, the decision-making process becomes critical to getting the most out of generative design. In this session, Autodesk and aPriori will talk about best practices leveraging the cost information provided through the partnership with aPriori to support decision making and tradeoff analysis, and moving it forward in the design to make workflow.

This class explores workflows for taking bodies modeled in Fusion 360 and converting them to more complex topologies via Voronoi-based patterns. These types of patters are organic and visually striking, resembling nature-based structures. This process is achieved by exporting bodies from Fusion into programs like Meshmixer, ReCap Pro and Voronator, where it’s easy to apply different types of patterns. The resulting meshes can be brought back into Fusion and turn them back into T-Splines for further development. A big benefit of this workflow is that designs combine different types of geometries (i.e. solid faces with Voronoi-based patterns) in a single body. Part One is a roundtable discussion about the theories and tactics of Generative Design. Attendees will be presented with a problem to optimize an existing component in a larger system. The problem definition will be examined while also considering how to extrapolate the performance of the existing part without having prior FEA data. Part Two is a hands-on lab where attendees will take their written plan and build the Generative studies to solve the problem. This lab will allow attendees to fully explore the Fusion 360 interface and to develop all needed geometry, boundary conditions, and study parameters. Part Three is also a lab where the generated results will be compared in the “Explore” environment and then successful solution candidates downloaded from the cloud. Results will then be modified using modeling tools and validated with Fusion 360’s FEA solver. Finally, results will be run through the CAM tools inside Fusion 360 to generate valid toolpaths for end-product machining. Part Four is a workshop that will take place in the Factory on the One Autodesk Expo floor and provide boot camp attendees with a first-hand look at the processes that go into manufacturing parts created with generative design. Attendees will get up close to 5-axis CNC machinery and the various workholding, tooling, and operational considerations involved.

Autodesk Fusion360 is continuously pushing boundaries of what's possible with Generative Design technology. With each release, new features and improvements are added to the product. In this hands-on lab you will step through the end-to-end generative workflow, with special focus put on the new features introduced in 2019. You will learn how to set up the generative problem, use automatic obstacle creation tool and explore new manufacturing constraints like 5-axis, 3-axis, 2.5-axis milling, 2D cutting, frame method and more. You will learn how to use the preview feature to validate your setup, how to review, compare and select outcomes, how to export them end further modify and how to validate final designs in the Fusion 360 Simulation workspace. This hands-on lab is created and led by the software development team behind the product. You will have opportunity to get your questions answered and to provide feedback directly to the people creating new features.

With the announcement of Autodesk Generative Design, we take one of the most common structural engineering problems and turn it on its head. This class will teach you how to use AGD to discover unthought-of designs for a structural aerospace bracket. Learn how to go from seed geometry definition in Fusion 360, to problem definition, design generation, and results exploration in Autodesk Generative Design. Select from generated designs of different materials, safety factors and build constraints. Next, we use detailed non-linear finite element analysis in Fusion 360 to verify the selected Generative Design solution. Learn how to input non-linear properties for AM metals and correctly interpret finite element results. Once verified we will discuss AM (metal powder bed) build preparation with the help of Autodesk NetFabb. Finally, we will compare the performance of our new Generatively Designed bracket with that of the baseline (subtractive manufactured) bracket by physically breaking both of them!

This class will show you how to use Revit software to create 3D mold drawings that are used to produce large-format 3D printed molds. We’ll cover the process of going from conceptual design to production mold tickets then to programming specific mold files with Revit and Inventor software. We’ll demonstrate a real-life project that went from a dream to reality in less than a year. You’ll see a real-world R&D project, the use of generative design, and the effects in production on a project that now highlights the New York City skyline.

Discover how Fusion Production software (a cloud-based tool for scheduling, tracking, and machine monitoring) works as part of a wider Autodesk manufacturing ecosystem and can give contract manufacturers and job shops a digital workflow to begin smart manufacturing. Establishing a connected network of processes within a job shop not only gives an overview of performance data, but also can be shared in upstream processes to unify the disciplines of design and manufacturing. We will demonstrate a workflow starting in CAD, moving to CAM, and ending with production management within Fusion Production. This will involve showing how we create and populate digital work instructions for process definition, conduct production tracking and quality assurance, and perform CNC machine monitoring. Finally, we will see how production data can be fed back into design and manufacturing teams to identify underperforming processes and make informed decisions to improve the return on existing assets.

This class presents several real-world examples using Fusion 360 software as a platform for making things using a Tormach PCNC milling machine. We will look in depth at case studies in rapid prototyping, mass customization, tool making, and specialty manufacturing.

From cataloging tooling to final post processing, this class will walk through the world of Inventor CAM software. We’ll review several real-world examples to see the different machining operations and their options. For anyone from hobbyist to professional, Inventor CAM really is the one-size-fits-all software for your machining needs. We’ll then turn to Inventor Nesting and look at how Inventor quickly creates nested sheets from assemblies, as well as from other 2D profiles. Examples will include sheet metal and woodworking projects. In both workflows, we’ll modify the source files to show that the machining paths and nestings automatically update.
