Buildings contribute to more than 40% of global carbon emissions, and one key scalable solution is to reuse and upgrade existing buildings and materials instead of constructing new ones. This session showcases how Autodesk Research is exploring artificial intelligence (AI) for net-zero buildings in the context of existing building projects. The team is exploring two AI-driven prototypes: one is about assessing a building’s existing conditions with limited and multimodal data. This enables AECO professionals to "see inside walls"—similarly to an “x-ray view”—and cataloging hidden materials including their potential for reusability without destructive testing. The second AI-driven prototype involves creating new low-carbon assemblies using repurposed materials. With this workflow users can specify high-level goals like “reuse materials”, “reduce carbon” and “minimize cost” and interactively explore many different options. The presentation highlights potential integration opportunities with relevant Autodesk platform features, demonstrating how designers, contractors, and building owners can make informed decisions that significantly minimize carbon footprint while creating new economic value from existing assets.

A survey conducted in 2020 revealed that 83% of construction professionals are faced with mental health conditions1 and over 200,000 people in construction are registered as disabled in the United Kingdom alone2. The Mercury Commissioning Digital Environment (CxDE) uses bespoke processes, workflows, and procedures, designed by Mercury and built within Autodesk Forma. The system enhances the Mercury project teams' abilities to plan, execute, measure, and control all commissioning deliverables on data center projects. At the forefront of the Mercury CxDE design is user experience, collaboration, and transparency that will see all data center projects achieve heightened levels of consistency in commissioning and greater predictability on key milestones. The system provides all project stakeholders with access to review, update, and sign off on their elements of the works in a collaborative digital environment. Bespoke insights are provided daily within Power BI via the Autodesk Forma Data Connector.

Copachisa is a general contractor of projects ranging from 100,000 sq. ft. to 1 million sq. ft. from schematic design to as-built documentation. In this session, we will share our experience moving forward working in a collaborative environment using Autodesk Forma. Before the pandemic, we usually worked with our information in a physical server. Due the necessity of working remotely, we decided to use BIM 360 software. The challenge was to move 40+ subcontractors and about 42 active projects very quickly (roughly two weeks). The most relevant part was first training the design teams, and then the whole organization. In a short time, we noticed the benefits of working in a web-based environment—for instance, extracting project data to conduct analytics—so we decided to expand our design workflows to precon and construction teams covering the entire project lifecycle. In 2023, we're redefining our internal processes, and by the beginning of 2024, the complete project cycle will be running in this environment.
