When reading modern engineering articles about infrastructure and the built environment, it is difficult to find an occurance where Digital Twins are not mentioned. By all accounts, a digital twin of a fixed asset or real-world system is immensely valuable and can be used to support a number of use cases. But, building a digital twin requires a significant amount of data. So, how does one start to build a digital twin? Three-dimensional (3D) basemaps produced from high resolution aerial imagery serve as the foundation and fabric for digital twins. Automated feature extraction from AI uniquely identifies critical infrastructure and can be used to grow an urban digital twin, removes the guess work and shortening the digital twin development time. For engineering professionals interested in exploring the world of digital twins, Nearmap offers a variety of foundational products for getting started.

The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector has steadily integrated building information modeling (BIM) and design technology specialist roles throughout the last decade. As the market matures, how will specialization and collaborative cross-industry understanding inform the evolution of these roles, teams, and the construction industry? This talk will consider how the role of the specialist will need to evolve and diversify to encourage broader understanding and adaptability. In the session, we’ll evaluate how the current and future need for increased levels of information—simultaneously by varied stakeholders and disciplines—has driven a need and desire for enhanced communication, connection, and comprehension outside of our respective specializations. This talk will explore opportunities for individuals and teams to scale, foster efficiency, collaborate, grow international networks, and recognize the need for knowledge and data beyond the specialization of the current BIM and design technology roles.

Although the structure of any design is its backbone, it is also one of the top areas in construction that adversely impacts the environment. But with the technology available today, we can reduce this environmental impact. Whether it’s eliminating wastage or minimizing embodied carbon, we have the means to reduce both short- and long-term environmental impacts and make structural design and engineering sustainable for our planet. This class will focus on the technologies available to structural designers and engineers today to work on connected and collaborative workflows and reduce waste, optimize material use, and make decisions to minimize embodied carbon. This class will also look at one of the top examples of using alternate structural materials in a commercial building, heavily reducing the environmental footprint of production and manufacturing.

Khatib & Alami (K&A)'s standardization and implementation of building information modeling (BIM) has promoted staff based on merit and effectiveness, and the firm is proud to be an equal opportunities employer. The success of women colleagues is highly visible across the company’s digital services activities. Of the three streams designed in the BIM road map, two created within the BIM unit (BIM for building and BIM for infrastructure) are led by women. In the BIM development stream women are dominant, in term of effectiveness. Amira ElSaeed—our “40 Under 40” awarded star—is one of the computational design heroes, while Vijaya Venkata is leading the BIM implementation in the Bangalore office. Furthermore, the BIM coordinator community has a strong mix of genders.

The Federal Reserve Board is renovating, preserving, and expanding a pair of large, adjacent historic buildings at the same time. The joint venture FORTUS assembled a 200-person, 23-consultant design team for this project. The team went on to develop 40+ Revit models totaling more than 15 GB with an additional 4,295 scans of point cloud data. To facilitate such a large endeavor, FORTUS employs common best practices for Revit and BIM 360 software. In this class, we’ll discuss the best practices that held up, expose the ones that struggled, and reveal newly discovered ones. The best practices we’ll cover focus on project setup, collaboration and communication standards, division of models and teams, alternate design options, point clouds, building orientation, BIM 360 Model Coordination, and QA\QC tools.

All projects have a cost and climate impact. It’s in the early stages that you have the opportunity to make decisions that have the biggest impact on costs and climate. Trends, compliance, and legal requirements necessitate rethinking and evaluating environmental impact at an earlier stage in a project. The traditional way of counting everything together at the end of the project is no longer enough. How can you make a decision before you have the full picture? How can you weigh the impact of different options before all the design work is done? How can you do this multiple times and in multiple ways? And how can you make this more fun? You can do this by changing the way you think about the role of sustainability, data, and how to engage the customer differently in the early, pivotal stages of a project.

This session will discuss how building information modeling (BIM) should fit into a company’s digital transformation strategy, drawing on the experiences and lessons learned from undertaking this exercise at multidisciplinary design consultancy Khatib & Alami (K&A). For K&A, BIM has been well-established across all types of building projects since 2011. In 2018, we developed a further road map to drive quality and consistency across all levels of the organization as part of the company’s digital transformation. This road map included assessing current staff; building a strong team of modelers, auditors, and developers to achieve an internal critical mass; implementing BIM across all four K&A design centers; and ensuring one consistent set of standards, in accordance with ISO 19650. BIM implementation has been a cornerstone of K&A’s digital transformation, and its success has established strong momentum across the wider program.
