This hands-on class will look at advanced manufacturing workflows by additive manufacturing within Fusion 360 software. Within the additive manufacturing workspace, Fusion 360 lets the users design and then manufacture their parts additively, either via powder bed or fused filament fabrication. Metal powder-bed manufacture (for example, SLM or DMLS) is a relatively new addition to Fusion 360, with fused filament fabrication being newer still. Hence, to many Fusion 360 users, the workflows may seem undefined. This class will take the audience on a journey to clarify these workflows. This journey will move from initial generatively designed part design, involving design for both types of additive manufacturing, right through to the final printing of the part—drawing on customer projects as examples. This class will conclude by teaching you how to combine powder bed and fused filament fabrication to work in tandem, enabling an extremely effective and powerful project workflow.

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is one of the most predominantly used additive manufacturing (AM) technologies today, producing functional metallic parts in several industries such as aerospace, medical, and automotive. As an emerging and complex technology, the manufacturing design guidelines and rules of LPBF along with its impact on sustainability are not well understood. This session builds off design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) principles as they apply to specific process parameters and machine dynamics defined in LPBF. These include recoater blade interference, support structure, and part distortion. This session also provides insight into the impact of AM on sustainability, as well as highlighting key design considerations to improving the implications on sustainability. With these considerations in mind, the session will explore how a user can implement design variables into their workflow using Autodesk Netfabb and its Simulation Utility.

Additive manufacturing (AM), better known as 3D printing, is disrupting the manufacturing industry. Its capabilities and build processes make additive technologies ideal for applications such as light-weighting and component consolidation. In order to fully capitalize on the awesome power of AM, an understanding of the technology and its limitations is crucial. However, this is not a natural skill for most designers and engineers. Since AM is so new and different from traditional manufacturing, it comes with a completely different set of design considerations. When properly understood and applied, design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) can vastly improve printing times and it results in higher-quality parts. As additive manufacturing (AM) gains greater industrial exposure, there's a drive toward defining practical, high-value processes and products. Defining viable business cases is critical to ensure successful technology adoption. Focusing on the marine industry and using a "propeller" as a familiar marine object for a case study, we'll explore 4 different design/manufacturing iterations aimed at highlighting the opportunities that AM offers. By fabricating these 4 components with wire and arc additive, a considerable portion of the process chain will be revealed from both hardware and software perspectives. We'll be exploring the designs and investigating design features facilitated by AM; looking at preparing these components for manufacture; seeing how these components are built considering the distortion and stress, geometric fidelity, and thermal management; and, finally, looking at post-processing techniques to bring these components to final form.

Desktop-scale 3D printing has become ubiquitous in many industries today. As this growth continues, the demand for ever-larger printed parts has increased exponentially. The move to large-format additive manufacturing (AM[ad1] ) is not as simple as just scaling up. Large-format AM delivers a whole new set of challenges not widely understood by the average designer or engineer. In this class, we will demonstrate how to create 3D-printing toolpaths in Fusion 360 software for both typical desktop-scale 3D prints, and large-scale robot-based printing using the new Fusion 360 robot post processor. We will compare and contrast these two workflows and discuss the additional strategies necessary for successful large-format AM. To close the class, we will summarize the three major categories of difficulties faced and how to mitigate them when moving into large-format additive: access to software tools and simulation solutions; process physics and material properties; and machine selection and equipment.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is bringing new innovations to traditional methods of manufacturing. AM is now being used to manufacture composite tooling, saving composite manufacturers cost and lead time over traditional tooling methods and materials. Composite tooling is typically an expensive process, due to the materials required to survive the various manufacturing processes involved. Tooling is exposed to excessive temperatures, pressures, and forces, causing tools to be unusable after a period of time. Manufacturing problems like warpage can render an expensive tool useless. This course will inform composite manufacturers about which AM methods, materials, and optimization techniques can be used to substitute traditional tooling. It will also cover the various composite manufacturing methods that can take advantage of additive tooling, and how to verify that the tooling will be appropriate for the design manufacturing process.

The additive manufacturing (AM) industry continues to grow, doubling in size roughly every five years. With this also comes an increasing environmental footprint. AM holds many promised environmental benefits. From lightweight parts for electric vehicles and reduced material consumption through optimized designs and flexible localized production, there’s no shortage of potential. However, many caveats remain. How do you print parts that perform better and last longer? Is the lightest part necessarily the most sustainable? How can we design not just for the printing process, but also for post processing, shipping, and the entire product lifecycle? In this class, we’ll look at design technology and case studies that will provide insight into these questions. We’ll also cover how you can start putting these technologies and workflows into practice to turn promised sustainability ideas into reality—while avoiding common pitfalls.

This seminar will cover design for digital manufacturing (DfDM) with a focus on additive manufacturing (DfAM). Capitalizing on the learnings from more than 1,000 projects posted on the You3Dit marketplace, we’ll walk our attendees through a DfAM process for translating customer needs into a design optimized for additive manufacturing, enabling performance, process, and product breakthroughs. We will describe high-level DfDM implications for common digital manufacturing tools, such as laser cutters, computer numerical control (CNC) machines, waterjet, and more. We will describe the overall DfDM process in the context of Fusion 360 software and how that workflow is optimized to support DfAM and other digital manufacturing technologies. Lastly, as a group we’ll create a set of design rules related to a new and powerful manufacturing process: “X.” The class will last 60 minutes, including 15 minutes at the end for questions and answers.

Generative Design opens up new solution spaces because there is more than one way to solve problems. Fusion software’s powerful CAM tools have been extended by additive manufacturing (AM) capabilities to enable workflows directly from design to additive, subtractive, or hybrid production of parts. This class will show an example workflow to apply subtractive preparations, add support structures, and calculate the toolpath for an Aconity Metal AM machine with a generatively designed model—all inside Fusion software. Metal AM processes produce parts of limited surface quality that need subtractive postprocessing. Putting data in the center allows for exploring design options, adding offsets/stock for milling, and calculating laser paths in the same software.

Autodesk has historically developed software and provided consulting services for metal additively manufactured (AM) lattice-type structures. Common powder-bed processes include SLM (Selective Laser Melting) / DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering), and EBM (Electron Beam Melting). When considering real-life applications of these structures, many assumptions are made about the characteristics of the manufactured material. Among others, these include strength, elastic moduli, thermal properties, material density, surface finish, and structural stability.
