This session will present the new DeWalt Corporation Hanger Design plug-in for Revit software, which automates the placement and design of hangers and trapeze assemblies for common MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) systems, such as pipe, duct, conduit, and cable trays. The placement of these assemblies has historically been based on “rule of thumb” sizing and spacing and/or prescriptive rules from various trade-specific handbooks that do not necessarily comply with current building-code requirements or structural point-load limitations. Modeling MEP systems in Revit software offers many advantages for coordination, prefabrication, consolidation of parallel runs, and placement of cast-in-place hanger inserts. This new tool analyzes these systems, and automatically places hanger/trapeze assemblies, anchors, and seismic bracing per building-code requirements with engineering calculation reports automatically generated. With the adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM), projects have benefited from model collaboration and improved communication. These intelligent models solve one problem by providing a conduit for earlier coordination, while fostering another, because the purpose of structural design and manufacturing models differ. The difference in the purpose behind each model—design versus manufacturing—can create limitations in how they can be used. The idea of Building Information Manufacturing (B.I.MFG.) is to enhance the design-centric intelligent model with manufacturing information, improving structural design and benefiting structural manufacturing. We will demonstrate how the SDS/2 Connect Add-in for Autodesk® Revit® Structure software improves structural design by incorporating manufacturing considerations. In this class, you will discover how to approve and review connections inside the Revit Structure model in accordance with codes of standard practice. This class shows users how Revit® MEP building design software uses lookup tables to automatically size pipe, conduit, and cable tray fittings properly. We look at how lookup tables are formatted and how the Revit family references the lookup table. Users will better understand the role of lookup tables in Revit and be able to use lookup tables when creating and editing families.

It's no secret that industry-sponsored software user groups are a powerful resource to your staff, but what are you doing to promote company-based communities of practice (CoP), why it is important to encourage these communities, and how can you support an internal community? In this roundtable session, we will explore the steps you need to take to develop company-wide communities of users. These communities encourage collaboration and peer-to-peer mentoring and ultimately provide a company with a viable conduit to communicate company-specific best practices. Examples will be from a multi-office company with a global membership.

The Content Center is an invaluable Inventor tool primarily used to store standard components and drive design accelerators, such as Frame Generator, Tube and Pipe, and Bolted Connections. Due to the Content Center database structure, there are several advantages for product design and data manipulation. One advantage is to replace large iPart tables with Content Center families. Simply publishing these large families to a custom Content Center Library will greatly reduce the amount of time required to place and modify these components versus placing them via the iPart table. We’ll also explore customization techniques offered in the Family table, but particularly via the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet linking. Editing Family tables within Excel unleashes all the power the spreadsheet tools have to offer, simplifying data coordination. Finally, we’ll use iLogic to extend the data within the Family table to solve the vexing problem of automatically establishing part numbers for Tube and Pipe Conduit parts.

Underground utilities such as cables and conduits are rarely seen, and underground electrical vaults are complicated, dangerous, badly lit, and sometimes full of water or ice. Vaults are hard to access and records of what is inside of them will often be missing. Using cameras and ReCap 360 software, the Locates, Engineering, and Operations personnel at Anchorage Municipal Light & Power are creating 3D models of these assets in hard-to-reach underground vaults. They then use ReCap 360 software to make these 3D models available to utility personnel out in the field or back in the office.

This class presents a real-life case study of a successful power substation design project using Autodesk Revit MEP software. It not only covers normal mechanical, lighting, power, security, hydraulic, and fire protection design, modeling, and documentation, but also introduces innovative ways of designing high-voltage cables in tight 3D building and tunnel spaces to meet the strict bending radius requirements. The solution provided some unprecedented methodology for high-voltage substation designers to resolve coordinated multidisciplinary 3D design issues. The methodology readily takes into account bending radius, electrical clearance, cable joints, site work, high-voltage cable position alternating and penetration in tunnels, high-voltage cable connections to Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and transformers through conduits and cable trays, lighting, and ventilation design.

This class will show you how to work programmatically with Autodesk Revit MEP software models. We will provide an overview of the entire Revit MEP API and specifically focus on the major enhancements in Revit 2013. The most important 2013 feature is the routing preference functionality. The 2013 light and light group API will also addressed. An overview of the available samples will be provided. All MEP domains including HVAC, electrical, and plumbing will be addressed. We will show how to analyze existing systems and create new MEP models from scratch. We will cover mechanical and electrical system traversal; display of system hierarchies in a tree view; components such as circuits, ducts, pipes, fittings, connectors, cable trays, and conduits; and automatic calculation and sizing based on room and space requirements. Note that prior .NET programming and Revit MEP product experience is required and that this class is not suitable for beginners.

Civil 3D Pressure Pipe is not a topic covered in many books or online tutorials. It assumes a basic understanding of piping, but in order to fully utilize all the intricacies of the software, you need to dive in and explore. This class will help novice users avoid pitfalls the speaker experienced when first using the program. We’ll also highlight many shortcuts you can use to help speed your model creation. We’ll then explain how our group was able to coordinate other outside sources’ piping, electrical, and/or public utility models with our pressure pipe models within BIM 360 software utilizing the Desktop Connector to find clashes and quickly deliver a final design to a client within very short deadlines. We were able to quickly create a site design for electrical conduits, storm, sanitary, and chilled water, within two months.

Integrated cross-disciplinary engineering requires integrated modeling. In turn, this necessitates a computational environment that promotes automation and facilitates collaboration and interoperability. At BuroHappold Engineering, Revit software is the principal Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, used across the organization for model coordination and deliverable production. Based on this, BuroHappold has developed global protocols for interdisciplinary collaboration, information exchange, and retention and reusability of computational knowledge. Drawing on the Revit software database, a visual programming environment such as the Dynamo extension platform can act as conduit and integrator between modeling, analysis, and production. We can use Dynamo extension’s built-in package manager in conjunction with resources such as a company intranet for dissemination of workflows as well as for version and dependency tracking. The effectiveness of such sharing of computational protocols and standards is a major component for collaboration in design practice.
