This class will demonstrate various reality capture strategies and use cases in different architecture, engineering, and construction project phases. We'll focus both on strategies that can be implemented in-house as well as options for integrating outsourced deliverables into in-house workflows. We have integrated point clouds from laser scans and unmanned autonomous systems (UAS) photogrammetry, and we'll show our workflows and results. We'll talk about the setup process for attaining accurate shared coordinates for automated GPS placement within Revit software. We'll also demonstrate how we created and implemented affordable UAS photogrammetric scans into our Revit workflows, and how they compare to laser scan point clouds. This class will showcase several case study projects in which we used laser and photogrammetric scans for various needs, ranging from developing design concepts for small residential additions to new large-scale health care projects and multimillion-dollar departmental relocations inside existing facilities.

After this class attendees will be able to exploit virtual reality in the realm of construction—particularly, the way and flow of utilizing Samsung Gear VR. Exploring virtual worlds through this device at the construction site or during meetings without other machines is a forte. This drove me to make a deep study of how to utilize it. There are 2 approaches to accomplish virtual reality by utilizing Gear VR during construction phases and facility management purposes. Two paths—Building Information Modeling (BIM) model and construction site picture based—can be technically considered. First, when you use Gear VR with your BIM model, you need to be familiar with software such as Revit software and 3ds Max software for visualizing and rendering. If you intend to navigate your BIM model in virtual worlds, you will also need game engines like Unity3D with Android Studio. Also, regarding exploring panorama pictures, equipment for panoramic photographs and editing tools that will help convert those photos to the 3D world will be required as well.

As more multiaxis machine tools are adopted into production, there is sometimes a disconnect between what is happening in the CAM software and the G-code results and how that affects machine behavior. This session is designed to provide clarity in understanding various programming concepts that not only make programming more simplified, but, more importantly, demystify the resultant code produced from CAM software—whether the application is a 4- or 5-axis milling machine, a multifunction lathe with live tooling, or even Swiss-style machines. These concepts can be applied to any CNC-controlled application. Having a better understanding of these concepts not only will help avoid potentially damaging collisions of the machine tool, it will also help select a machine tool and control combination when purchasing new equipment.

AutoLISP is a very powerful programming language, but it doesn't offer the same knockout punch that VB.NET/C# does when combined with the AutoCAD .NET API. This class will explore the fundamentals of VB.NET and examine how you can use it to enhance existing AutoLISP routines. During this class, you will learn how to create basic commands for AutoCAD software, and discover functions that you can use with your existing AutoLISP routines. We will show examples of how to work with AutoCAD objects, get input from the user, create a basic form, and pass values between AutoLISP and .NET, plus other general programming concepts. For this class, you should know some AutoLISP, but it will be a beginner-level class for VB.NET and the AutoCAD .NET API.

This roundtable will focus on different available virtual-reality (VR) hardware options, with the purpose of implementing VR into architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) workflows. We will have an in-depth discussion both about the tethered VR options like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, as well as about more-affordable mobile options like the Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard, and others. Printing metal parts using additive manufacturing is expansive. Most of the commercialized metal 3D printers involve cutting the metal component off the metal substrate after deposition and subsequent removal of support structure, which itself could be made of metal. Incorrect design considerations can result in distorted parts and impossible-to-remove support structures. Conformal cooling molds are a prime example of where complexity involved in design requires metal additive manufacturing. As a family-owned and managed, medium-sized construction company, Grimm GmbH wanted to digitalize all their running corporate processes. Therefore, they decided to develope a collaboration platform called "Zapper". This online solution, based on Autodesk Forge technology, allows the connection of deep Autodesk Revit knowledge with standardized ERP-Systems like Microsoft Dynamics 365. The Zapper app supports the whole company’s infrastructure in a smart way. This solution allows management, project partners, all employees and clients to collaborate simply and with high efficiency. To enhance customer experience, a mobile app for clients was developed as part of the project. Customers can easily access all the current project data, at any time. In this class, you will learn how Grimm use their BIM models for planning, calculating, tendering and visualizing. Grimm contracted the internal start-up Sumoo and the software company ioLabs for the development of the Zapper app.

Coupled with traditional A/E Design, we are also in charge of developing and managing VDC workflows aimed at shortening the Schedule, reducing Cost, and optimizing Turn-over. As a sequel to last year's Great Dynamo Dig, this class will demonstrate new concepts that will help you creatively capitalize on your Revit software data with the Dynamo visual programming language extension. Dynamo extension enables users with powerful data-mining capabilities through a graphical user interface. These capabilities, once only available to Revit software’s API experts, have made it easier to get to your Revit software data, to manipulate it, and to stream it to many external sources. The class will introduce key concepts for accessing, formatting, and sharing Revit software model data using Dynamo extension and packages such as LunchBox and Slingshot.

With rapid growth in technology—especially in manufacturing processes—coordination between designers, engineers, and shop-floor CNC (computer numerical control) programmers is a challenging scenario. Manufacturers cannot always make designs created by designers and engineers, and they send the designs back to the design team for modification in the part model. Additionally, sometimes the right tools may not be available on the shop floor. To overcome these problems, designers and engineers should obtain a basic knowledge of CNC programming and CNC-code generation, which could reduce the time to market and enhance the company's return on investment. This class covers the steps involved in importing the CAD Model into Inventor HSM integrated CAM Solution for Inventor 2015 software. This process reduces the errors involved during importation and further enables designers and engineers to generate CNC codes and set up models for manufacturability. We will also discuss workflow regarding sending the codes to a machine.
