McAuliffe Stevens Architects Ltd – Design, Document, and Coordinate Linear Accelerator for Healthcare SDHB

McAuliffe Stevens Architects Ltd – Design, Document, and Coordinate Linear Accelerator for Healthcare SDHB

Customer challenge

The project comprised of the swap out and refurbishment of a Linear Accelerator upgrade together with bunker and control room refurbishments for the local SDHB. The challenges included 1. Reconcile Control Room and Bunker to the client’s brief. 2. 3D Model the Linear Accelerator based on information supplied by the vendor. 3. Collaborate within the 3D environment with the consultants as the lead architect to manage coordination and clash detection of services 4. Need to visually show outcomes before the project went to tender. 5. Comply with the high level of accuracy required for all services. 6. Manage the long lead delivery times of highly complex equipment. Due to the highly technical nature of the project, Autodesk Revit became the obvious choice of software to deal with various challenges presented with it’s ability to work within the 3D environment and produce real time data and images as the project progressed.

Project goals

As lead Architect, McAuliffe Stevens Architects Ltd were required to provide a very high level of documentation with very high accuracy as a requirement for the high-value equipment to be installed. Revit provided the capability to do this, along with assisting in providing full coordination with all consultants with full clash detection for the large number of services required for this project. Continually liaise with the client during the duration of the project with updates and modifications through the use of 3D visualization with images and virtual reality equipment which Revit could provide through it’s 3D interface. Due to the high technical nature of the equipment such as Linear Accelerator and Photo Neutron Doors which had long lead times, the project needed careful management to allow for a smooth continuation and coordination of the work flow. Revit could provide this with 3D spatial planning to ensure that the fitting of equipment could be staged later in the contract.

Solution

Following discussions and advice from MCD Cad Consultancy Ltd, McAuliffe Stevens Architects Ltd utilized Autodesk Revit software for this project. Autodesk Revit software gave the architects the ability to prepare documents to a very high level with a great deal of accuracy. Views were created on the fly to resolve potential problem areas and eliminate the risk of clashing of the many services especially to the ceiling areas. Autodesk Revit was able to provide highly rendered images giving the stakeholders up to date detailed Information when modifications were required. Decisions could be made very quickly on modifications and how much effect these would have on the project.

Business outcome

The expectations of McAuliffe Stevens Architects Ltd requirements were fulfilled with the use of the Autodesk Revit software for the project. Due to the highly complex nature of the project, Autodesk Revit was able to, through the use of the linked coordination of the consultant’s models, resolve early clash detection of services resulting in a huge gain, minimizing delays and construction costs during the project timeline. The use of visual imagery to help the client better understand the layout of the project also reduced time in obtaining faster turnaround in decisions from the client which resulted in a smoother workflow and keep the project running to programmed

Conclusion

The project has been a big success fulfilling the clients brief, being completed on time and within budget. Images generated by Autodesk Revit during the design and construction process bear a very close resemblance to the control and bunker room actually constructed. Autodesk Revit played a key role in allowing the vision to be realized with minimal surprises.

Collaboration of Revit with Baker Garden Architects with CCM Partner to Produce Award Winning Design

The project comprised the creation of state-of-the-art teaching and performing facilities for the University of Otago School of Performing Arts and Music. The challenge was to design new world class recording studios and performance spaces in a new soundproof concrete clad building, and reconfigure out-of-date 1960s campus buildings to create an integrated new facility. The use of Autodesk Revit 3D modelling provided a most effective tool to envision and document the highly technical and complex new recording studio building and integrate adaptive reuse of the adjacent existing buildings. Challenges included: 1. Developing the design in close unison with partner architects CCM based 400 miles away. 2. Linking the new building seamlessly to the existing building structure to create a single unified complex. Existing floor levels had to be accurately modelled to achieve accessible ramping between existing and new floor levels. 3. Modelling and documenting a complex shaped building
