Collaboration of Revit with Baker Garden Architects with CCM Partner to Produce Award Winning Design

Collaboration of Revit with Baker Garden Architects with CCM Partner to Produce Award Winning Design

Customer challenge

The project comprised the creation of state-of-the-art teaching and performing facilities for the University of Otago School of Performing Arts and Music. The challenge was to design new world class recording studios and performance spaces in a new soundproof concrete clad building, and reconfigure out-of-date 1960s campus buildings to create an integrated new facility. The use of Autodesk Revit 3D modelling provided a most effective tool to envision and document the highly technical and complex new recording studio building and integrate adaptive reuse of the adjacent existing buildings. Challenges included: 1. Developing the design in close unison with partner architects CCM based 400 miles away. 2. Linking the new building seamlessly to the existing building structure to create a single unified complex. Existing floor levels had to be accurately modelled to achieve accessible ramping between existing and new floor levels. 3. Modelling and documenting a complex shaped building

Project goals

To provide responsive Autodesk BIM capability for Baker Garden Architects that would allow the practice to clearly communicate an evolving design with engineering consultants and university stakeholder representatives. The University of Otago required a LOD 300 BIM model to be handed over at the end of the project to facilitate property and asset management. Revit effectively provided that capability. The software provided a solution that gave flexibility during the design and construction process to accommodate modifications required by the client. Visualization using Autodesk Revit allowed the client to view these changes as work progressed and helped keep the project progressing on time. Because of the large number of technical services and consultants involved, a solution needed to be able to provide a way of linking all the data together into a single model to provide a single source of truth to enable clash detection to resolve servicing issues.

Solution

Following discussions and advice from MCD Cad Consultancy Ltd, Baker Garden Architects Ltd utilised Autodesk Revit software for this project. The software allowed the architects to communicate visually with their clients. Through the design process client representatives were able to readily perceive interior and exterior design evolution through use of 3D modelling and rendering. 3D renderings played a pivotal role in conveying the design to stakeholders which included Maori cultural consultation. Through this process cultural design input was able to be incorporated in the design using the Revit model. With Autodesk Revit’s ability to incorporate and manage many linked files at once, the consultants model files were linked into a central file model to give a continually updated single source point of truth to check for clash detection of services. Autodesk Revit allowed the scheduling of critical construction elements such as precast cladding panels and interior acoustic panels.

Business outcome

The expectations of Baker Garden Architects Ltd requirements were fulfilled with the use of the Autodesk Revit software for the project. Additional architectural features were readily able to be incorporated into the design, such as the late addition of an overhead service gantry in the main recording studio. Autodesk Revit allowed the client to view the outcome before it happened and helped keep the project on time. Integration of all the adjacent buildings and levels with the new complex was able to be carried out with clever planning to minimize extra construction work saving time money. The linked coordination of the engineering consultants models resulted in early clash detection of services and structure resulting in a huge gain, minimizing delays and construction costs during the project timeline.

Conclusion

The project has been a big success and has been awarded Architecture and Property Awards. Project images generated by Autodesk Revit during the design process bear a very close resemblance to the building that has been constructed on site. Autodesk Revit played a key role in allowing the vision to be realized with few surprises.

McAuliffe Stevens Architects Ltd – Design, Document, and Coordinate Linear Accelerator for Healthcare SDHB

The project comprised of the swap out and refurbishment of a Linear Accelerator upgrade together with bunker and control room refurbishments for the local SDHB. The challenges included 1. Reconcile Control Room and Bunker to the client’s brief. 2. 3D Model the Linear Accelerator based on information supplied by the vendor. 3. Collaborate within the 3D environment with the consultants as the lead architect to manage coordination and clash detection of services 4. Need to visually show outcomes before the project went to tender. 5. Comply with the high level of accuracy required for all services. 6. Manage the long lead delivery times of highly complex equipment. Due to the highly technical nature of the project, Autodesk Revit became the obvious choice of software to deal with various challenges presented with it’s ability to work within the 3D environment and produce real time data and images as the project progressed.
