See how a repository of quick solutions to real-time design-tool challenges enhances Autodesk software skills and increases expertise. This class will demonstrate how bite-size nuggets of know-how enable designers at Perkins+Will to expand their knowledge of Autodesk’s tools in parallel with project work. You’ll follow strategies illustrating how to reduce the time needed to communicate answers through a system favoring brevity, visual communication, and real-time learning. Google is great when you’re searching for answers, but it is also a source of endless distractions. Having an alternative for common questions helps keep teams on task. We will demonstrate how easily knowledge can be captured and shared for future use. We will highlight the importance of convenience and quick consumption as we discuss packaging know-how into appropriate portions. To finalize the presentation, a method for breaking down larger questions and workflows will demonstrate how portioning knowledge can aid in comprehension.

Many designers often feel it can be difficult to create models that accurately express their design intents, often trying to "beat Revit software into submission." This often leads to poor modeling habits, and in some cases, a complete lack of necessary model geometry, causing coordination issues. In this course, we'll discuss the common challenges encountered when modeling various types of building elements, and we'll cover some tips and tricks for overcoming them. We'll find some solutions are hidden right within Revit, and others may be solved with creative modeling hacks and techniques. We'll discuss modeling tips that overcome common challenges related to curtain wall and stairs/railings, as well as discuss families/content created that enable special workflow-related code compliance, site plans, and hybrid detailing. All of these techniques can contribute to increased model reliability, better-coordinated designs, and overall increased efficiency and project profits.

Are you a Building Information Modeling (BIM) manager seeking to increase the efficiency of your company and project teams? Are you a model manager struggling through workflow issues? Or maybe you’re neither of those, but you work in Revit software every day and want to learn ways to work smarter. This class will focus on using visual programming in the Dynamo extension to bridge everyday workflow gaps within Revit software. The class will provide a brief overview of Dynamo and the many available packages that the Dynamo community has already created that can be used to automate many tasks. The class will also go over some basic tips and tricks you can use when setting up Dynamo, and we’ll troubleshoot. The remainder of the class will focus on specific examples that bridge workflow gaps and/or increase automation within Revit software. Example scripts will include the following: finding annotation styles within legends for model cleanup; coordinating dummy view tags across linked models; binding models without losing workset/phase information; swapping ceiling-based lights for face-based lights.
