The dilemma of choosing to open a startup or a nonprofit is always present in the mind of entrepreneurs. In this age, where small startups are raising money and there are huge investments in the architecture, engineering, construction, and owner/operator (AECO) industry, what is missing and what can be an opportunity? In this panel, the San Francisco Computational Design Institute will try to find the winning formula. This effort aims to promote cooperation under the same umbrella and help the AECO community as a whole. We will focus on how we, as experts, can help our community to share our knowledge and provide better solutions. There are many different types of 3D reality-capture sensors and software in the marketplace today, and they all have a laundry list of industry jargon to go along with them. This presentation is a vendor-neutral overview of what technologies are out there for the consumer to choose. This includes sensors that range from high-accuracy metrology-type instruments to static laser scanners to aerial-mounted or unmanned aerial vehicles systems to handheld sensors. All of these have different accuracies and other components built into the systems that can prove to be confusing to a potential consumer. There is also a larger group of software products that consumes the 3D data where the user creates end deliverables. This session will provide an overview of all these topics so consumers know what kinds of conversations to have with vendors to make good buying decisions. AIA Approved

After discussing where tolerance problems come from, and discovering how tolerancing problems can affect assembly of manufactured parts, we’ll show how to analyze assemblies using Inventor Tolerance Analysis. Augmented reality—or supplementing real-life experiences with computer-generated images (think Google Glasses)—is a rapidly evolving market. A recent study released by CCS Insight predicts that the augmented-reality hardware market alone will reach $4 billion by 2018. As design studios consider how they can become more inventive and effective in the future, augmented reality is definitely playing a role as they consider how to blur the lines between physical and digital prototypes. In this class Brian Pene, director of emerging technology at the office of the CTO at Autodesk, Inc., shares insights into the trends and new technology that his team is researching and involved with. Specifically, Brian will talk about the new types of both input and display interfaces that have recently become available, as well as the possibilities with interactive real-time 3D experiences. He’ll also talk about how you can apply this technology to design problems of particular concern to automotive design, such as the improvement of perceived quality.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has selected the design of its new Southern California headquarters located on a 19-acre site near the campus of University of California Riverside. The approximately 380,000-square-foot facility will be one of the largest and most advanced vehicle-emissions testing and research facilities in the world. It will also be the largest “net-zero energy” structure (producing as much energy as it uses) of its type in the nation. Learn how Hensel Phelps and U.S. CAD used the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection to procure, win, and manage a project through design into construction. Topics will include using Navisworks software as a starting point in design validation for AR/VR environments, using 3ds Max software with drone data to implant design in existing spaces, managing detailed level trade partner files for field validation using drone data and laser scans, using Civil 3D files to help quantify and manage earthwork, and validating coordinated 3D models in the field via use of tablets and BIM 360 Glue software.

Product development is a pain, right? It doesn't have to be. Let us walk you through it. We're 2 industrial designers with a knack for teaching. Design Thinking is a great process to move a team quickly from problem space to solutions. But it's just that: a cognitive process. What do you do with all those great ideas? This class will be a hands-on introduction to Design Thinking and Making. In small teams, we'll work rapidly through a design challenge, using a human-centered approach, and develop virtual prototypes using Fusion 360 software. Participants will be given a project brief, and we'll select teams at random. The focus of this highly engaging workshop is to rapidly develop a product solution (as a team) through Design Thinking and conceptual realization using Fusion 360. Teams will prepare and present their solutions in an informal share.
