Description

Generative design, Internet of Things, deep learning, advanced visualization, and cloud-based collaboration are all technologies that Autodesk, Inc., is pioneering to facilitate its customers in the imagining, designing, and creating of a better world. But how can these technologies disrupt the current education model? This session will facilitate an energetic and informational discussion among industry experts and educators.

Key Learnings

  • Learn about key technologies that will influence pedagogical change
  • Learn how to evaluate the potential impact technologies can/will create
  • Predict how these technologies can influence respective fields of study
  • Formulate a plan to enable students to take advantage of future technologies

David Weightman is a Professor teaching Industrial design at the University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign. Way longer ago than he cares to mention he graduated from the Royal College of Art in London with a MDesRCA in Industrial Design ( Engineering ). Since then he has worked in a number of Universities in the UK teaching ID and Transportation design, before coming to the US in 2003. In addition to teaching he has worked as a design consultant for various organisations including Yamaha motorcycles, British Rail, Massey Ferguson, the BBC and Tate Gallery. His teaching activities now involve ID students in studio projects, and in teams with Engineering students and this has involved a long history of collaboration with Autodesk. His efforts to become competent with Alias were challenging, but he is convinced that Fusion 360 gives sliced bread reason to worry about its pre-eminent position. Time spent as an IDEA studio fellow with Autodesk in SF cemented that view….
