Transformers: Revit in Disguise
Become an adopted member of our design team for the session. Encounter a hands-on experience of the different stages of our transition from AutoCAD software to Revit software, and discover the benefits and potential pitfalls along the way. SSEN Transmission projects play a leading role in reducing carbon emissions through infrastructure investment. We're embracing technology to help deliver the large-scale infrastructure growth required to make a decarbonized electricity network a reality. For the design teams, this involves growing our digital design and collaboration capabilities using the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection and Autodesk Forma. This workshop will focus on our design process for high-voltage substations across a portfolio of live projects. The SSEN Transmission team will demonstrate steps taken to grow a more traditional 2D AutoCAD design process into a collaborative design approach using Revit and Autodesk Forma. There will be opportunities to interact with models using various applications and hardware.

A BIM Strategy for an Architectural Firm: By a BIM Manager Who’s Also an Architect

Ishimoto Architects and Engineers, founded in 1927, is an architectural design firm with experts in architecture, structure, and MEP. To achieve better architecture, it’s essential to integrate intelligent models across disciplines and adopt a holistic design approach. We use Revit software to create simulation environments and optimize overall designs. Currently, Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism is accelerating BIM-based building permit submissions, requiring intelligent models with vast amounts of data. As BIM managers who also practice design, we can immediately address real-world challenges and provide feedback. For mid-sized firms without dedicated BIM teams, this agile approach is a practical way to integrate BIM smoothly. This session will share how our practices have transformed our project processes.

Public Restroom Design Transformed by Automated Design Systems Using Forge
We developed A-SPEC, a computational design tool that aims to be a partner for architectural designers, based on the concept of "thinking together about RESTROOMS.” For any specified space, the cloud-based A-SPEC program will run multiple simulations and propose some better restroom-layout plans from tens of thousands of ideas. The design know-how that we’ve proposed in the past is utilized throughout the program to evaluate both the automatic calculations and the layout of the automatic design results derived from those calculations. The design results are converted into a 3D model using Forge Viewer, with veracity confirmable by the human eye. Finally, the results can be linked to Revit software and AutoCAD software via the Design Automation API. In addition to reducing design work time, this tool enables generalization and uniformity of design accuracy without relying on the individual know-how of designers.

Two Weeks to Four Hours: How Populous Built Efficiency with Generative Design
Exhibition design of any sort has a unique set of needs based on event diversity, and equine and livestock venues are no different. The frequent transition of layouts demands a wide variety of designs. The Populous Equine and Expo team recently implemented Dynamo and Generative Design in Revit software to provide optimized outcomes driven by underlying data and customer requirements for future growth. Through this effort, Populous was able to produce detailed higher-quality layouts at 95% efficiency. This panel discussion will review the outcome of this exercise, focusing on time savings during stall and pen layouts at the conceptual phase, and providing a look into planned developments around automation and resulting BIM (Building Information Modeling) content. We will highlight the value of building your own tools and maximizing automation workflows, and discuss our plans for the next steps in expanding the applicability to other market sectors.

new approach to teaching engineering drawing to engineering students
Current the method of teaching engineering drawing consists of teaching the fundamentals such as orthographic projection of views and asking thee students to visualize what the object will look like in 3 D. this makes it very challenging and often times difficult for the students to comprehend the principles. A new method is developed by a group of faculty members at an engineering college in India under the mentorship of the speaker and Dr. Rio D'Souza, the Principal of the engineering college. The method was then validated with faculty in other engineering colleges and the students. All of them have found the new approach to be far superior in achieving the outcomes of better educated students and more motivated faculty..

Model-Make-Measure: Connecting the Studio to the Workshop
University College London at Here East, a new manufacturing center in east London opened in 2018, hosts a new master’s degree in design for manufacture uniquely within a school of architecture. Equipped with industrial robots, computer numerical control (CNC) milling and turning machines for fabrication and structural frames, large-scale metrology, and climate chambers for testing, UCL at Here East strives to cultivate an environment with students at the interface between a design studio and the point of industrial production. How might the well-established methods for manufacturing in automotive and aerospace be used in construction? This session will present an educator’s approach of “model-make-measure,” showing how the course connects students with the properties of materials used to construct buildings and the fabrication processes these materials undergo existing as nominal digital design intent. Examples will show how this approach has suggested novel design outcomes and ways of working, offering skills transferrable to the construction industry.

Rapid Fusion Lifecycle Deployment When Time Is of the Essence
Fusion Lifecycle software can be deployed faster than any other PLM (product lifecycle management) tool on the market. This was tested for a company that wanted to take its ventilator project to production in the shortest time possible due to the COVID-19 ventilator shortage. A prototype of the ventilator was completed using Fusion 360 software. Now it is time to take it into mass production using Items and BOMs, ECO, and NPI Workspace of Fusion Lifecycle.

Sustainable Construction Solutions That Reduce Time, Labor, and Cost
The traditional method of building walls using studs is labor and time intensive, and results in a fundamentally flawed product, with a substantial percentage of the wall being thermally and acoustically bridged. BamCore has developed a wood-bamboo hybrid panel that is structural and load bearing. It enables the firm to build walls from panels that are prefabbed to customer specifications. It eliminates 80-90% of the internal framing, along with the thermal and acoustic bridges that framing creates in traditional walls. It also reduces the need for hard-to-find job-site labor. This class will cover the design steps we use, CAD-CAM workflows, the marking of MEP locations, and our job-site app, providing a comprehensive view of our industrialized construction processes. We will also talk about the tremendous sustainability of the BamCore system, which comes both from the use of incredibly fast-growing timber bamboo and also the dramatically improved thermal envelopes that our walls provide.

Automate Site Specific Models within Revit and ACA Utilizing LotSpec
This session will introduce LotSpec, an Option Management add-in which automates “Lot-Specifics” within Revit and AutoCAD Architecture. We will be interviewing a LotSpec user from Smith Douglas Homes. The session will discuss the pain points home builders face and how LotSpec can help ease the burden of site specific architecture. We will cover how LotSpec can automate the process to improve organization, project management, and estimating by providing concise drawings. LotSpec uses a rules-based workflow to assign logic to project elements. The automation process assists in eliminating combination errors and reduced red-lines.
