BIM Professional Services for Coastal Ports

BIM Professional Services for Coastal Ports

Customer challenge

Marine Department is a regulatory agency entrusted with the development of water transportation systems and maritime commerce to connect to other transportation systems including passenger and cargo ports, shipyards, Thai Shipping fleet and related businesses.

The Engineering Division within Marine Dept is responsible for the construction of waterways, various related buildings and the maintenance of more than 73 Coastal ports with a service life ranging from 10 to 30 years.

Project goals

The Engineering Division is implementing a digital application to assist in the maintenance of coastal ports across Thailand.

This project comprises of 2 parts:

1) Creating BIM Models for 73 coastal ports by integrating paper-based drawings, CAD drawings, laser scans, drone photogrammetry, and field survey work together.

2) Programming for a mobile application to lodge maintenance requests, provide initial repair costs and reference BIM data for accuracy.

Their main goal is to increase efficiency for maintenance repair jobs together with upgrading their drawing database as a digital model into BIM.

Solution

Autodesk Solution Provider VR Digital Co., Ltd provided services for laser scans, drone photogrammetry, field work and the production of BIM Models for all 73 coastal ports.  In addition, the team provided training for Autodesk Revit and Autodesk Docs for all related staff within the Engineering Department.

VR Digital also assisted in software budgeting and solutions support for the Autodesk Architecture, Engineering & Construction (AEC) Collection and Autodesk Docs as a three-year term project.

Business outcome

The Marine Department now uses the Autodesk AEC Collection together with Autodesk Docs in their Engineering Division and has an Autodesk Revit Model of all coastal ports for use in their maintenance and repair work.

They are currently using the application to lodge maintenance repairs on their coastal ports throughout Thailand.  The Revit Model is being used as reference as a master database.

Conclusion

The Marine Department now has digital twins of all 73 coastal ports for use in their work processes to maintain coastal ports. This initial project digitalizes drawing information and forms the basis for the mobile application to reference for maintenance and repair jobs. The program is now going live and will be implemented into their maintenance workflows as part of their routine to lodge repair work.

Igloo Studio won a contract with an international network and wanted to create opportunities for Thai Animators to work and compete internationally given the current economic uncertainties and pandemic situation in the world. They needed support in creating their team to establish software planning for use that could readily expand as they grew their business. Igloo Studio uses Autodesk Maya in their workflow and needed a process to expand their software requirements going forward.

Chulalongkorn University: Modelling Campuses with Infraworks

The Office of Physical Resources Management at Chulalongkorn University has started to collect information on building modelling as part of its process of constructing new buildings on campus. They currently have a significant number of buildings with BIM models. They were looking for a way to consolidate these BIM models into a master plan for the campus grounds – originally a 2D AutoCAD drawing.
