Chulalongkorn University: Modelling Campuses with Infraworks

Chulalongkorn University: Modelling Campuses with Infraworks

Customer challenge

The Office of Physical Resources Management at Chulalongkorn University has started to collect information on building modelling as part of its process of constructing new buildings on campus. They currently have a significant number of buildings with BIM models. They were looking for a way to consolidate these BIM models into a master plan for the campus grounds – originally a 2D AutoCAD drawing.

Project goals

VR Digital was consulted to assist the Office of Physical Resource Management together with teams from the Faculty of Architecture and the Faculty of Engineering to integrate the information from the BIM model by updating their 2D master plan into a 3D model of Chulalongkorn University. VR Digital proposed to use 3D mobile laser scanning (MLS) technologies with the Autodesk AEC Collection to capture current conditions and prepare a 3D base map to enable the incorporation of their BIM Models.

Solution

VR Digital, with guidance from the teams involved, captured 3D point cloud data using an MLS scanner of existing internal roads, street furniture, trees and vegetation, and buildings. This 3D point cloud data was then processed and combined in Autodesk Recap, inserted into Autodesk Infraworks and used as the basis for creating a 3D base map model. Existing BIM models from Chulalongkorn University were then inserted into the 3D map and will be used for planning and management purposes.

Business outcome

VR Digital was able to provide a functional 3D infrastructure base map model for Chulalongkorn University for use in its infrastructure planning and management processes. Existing BIM models from Chula could then be inserted into the Autodesk Infraworks model of the site, with non-graphical details of individual buildings and the ability to update these BIM models as the university builds new buildings.

Conclusion

The Office of Physical Resources Management, Chulalongkorn University is currently using the Infraworks base map model in its planning and management processes and has thus been able to make good use of the multitude of programmes that are included in the Autodesk AEC Collection.
