Success Story

131 Queens Street Auckland

131 Queens Street Auckland

Customer challenge

Workspace Architects is medium sized architectural practice specialising in commercial office building refurbishments and fitouts.

Workspace Architects have used Autodesk products for over 25 years transitioning from 2D AutoCAD workflows to Autodesk Revit approximately seven years ago.

The main challenges facing Workspace Architects for this project, a nine-storey concrete heritage building located at 131 Queens Street Auckland, is the client’s requirement for an exposed services ceiling and how to provide detailed visuals to the client along with coordinating between the MEP services consultants involved.

Project goals

Workspace Architects has the followings goals for this project:

  1. Ability to easily interface and coordinate with various MEP services consultants.
  2. Need to provide clear 3D visualisation to the client for design approval and sign off.
  3. Manage coordination and clash detection of exposed services between trades (very important for exposed ceilings) during the design stages before construction commences on site.

Solution

Graphic Dimensions Limited were invited to discuss the project needs and their recommendation to Workspace Architects as the principal stakeholder was to specify that the project team are required to use Autodesk Revit for modelling authoring and documentation.

Autodesk Revit caters for the in-house team collaboration utilizing work-sharing as well as the collaboration and model coordination functionality between disciplines when MEP services models are linked into the architectural model.

Autodesk Revit also allows Workspace Architects the ability to interface with rendering software of choice by way of plugins to provide the detailed visualisation to gain approval from the main stakeholders of the exposed MEP ceiling services.

Business outcome

Autodesk Revit provides greater clarity and certainty of content and documentation between disciplines during the design stages to then provide accurate construction documentation to the contractors mitigating costly variations and time delays on site.

By involving other MEP consultants early in the prebuild design stages of the project using Autodesk Revit it provided clarity between building structure and necessary MEP service routes to avoid clashes enabling greater control over final project delivery on site.

Conclusion

“Autodesk Revit is an essential tool for Workspace Architects that allows our design team to execute ideas and perform on work shared projects effectively, particularly in a collaborative environment in our office.

Throughout the many projects we have used Autodesk Revit, we have successfully delivered an accurate and detailed 3D model for design and construction documentation.

Autodesk Revit also allows us to collaborate with a wider consultant project team of Services and Structural Consulting Engineers, as it is the preferred software platform most used in our industry, locally and nationally. Allowing us to share, collaborate and coordinate design documentation across disciplines enabling us to understand other consultant’s design intent clearly through the software.” – Barryn Westfield, Director, Workspace Architects.

Wellington College Memorial Hall

The Wellington College Memorial Hall project created significant design challenges for the structural design team at Clendon Burns & Park due to the project’s complex structural and seismic standards requirements. Using Autodesk solutions Clendon Burns and Park needed to collaborate with the other consultants Autodesk Revit models.

Cuba Precinct Redevelopment

Like many New Zealand companies, Covid19 lockdowns in 2020 provided many challenges for Athfield Architects. With the assistance of Graphic Dimensions, preplanning for major events by their IT staff and Autodesk solutions, Athfield Architects’ design teams were able to seamlessly work remotely across their three offices.

a.k.a Architecture Ltd is an architectural practise based in Wellington New Zealand specialising in residential and small commercial projects. a.k.a Architecture Ltd has a particular interest in buildings that employ a strong sense of materiality, simple but clever composition of form, and a controlled use of light to redefine spaces.a.k.a Architecture Ltd historically used Bentley Systems MicroStation throughout the practise and then transitioned to Autodesk Revit LT as the first step into BIM capable software several years ago. As the practise has now expanded, they have identified some of the Autodesk Revit LT limitations such as standalone only models preventing model collaboration, no Autodesk Revit API functionality preventing the use of add-ins, and no in place family option.a.k.a Architecture Ltd now requires the ability for their users to collaborate on larger projects and recognise that they need to provide more high quality rendering to their clients with virtual reality.a.k.a Architecture Ltd approached Graphic Dimensions Limited as their Autodesk Reseller for a solution to these issues.
