An often-overlooked sustainability challenge in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is: What should we do with all existing individual houses? Current technology enables sustainable design of new houses. However, climate change cannot be addressed without tackling the existing building stock. More than 62 million single-family houses need thorough renovation if we are to fulfill the EU climate ambitions by 2050. This means tackling 6,000 houses per day, starting today—in Europe alone! We'll demonstrate how artificial intelligence (AI), and generative design will support building owners and architects to quickly come up with new sustainable design options, ready for industrialized prefabrication with standardized elements. In this session, you'll learn how AI can add flexibility in the design with standardized elements. You'll find inspiration for a new balance between standardization and flexibility. We'll show applications for detached houses as well as terraced houses with complex shapes and requirements.

Architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) professionals want to create cost-effective, sustainable projects and are looking for technologies, standards, and processes to help them make trade-offs between financial and environmental costs during design and preconstruction. Forward-looking firms—including Walsh Construction and SNHA (a Woolpert Company)—took part in a pilot to test new integration between Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) and Autodesk Takeoff, the 2D and 3D quantification solution. Using quantities from Autodesk Takeoff, EC3 users can review the embodied carbon emissions of proposed building materials. Further, it can connect the quantities and carbon emissions to the International Cost Management Standard (ICMS), a framework that provides mythology for reporting and for classifying project costs and carbon emissions in a structured format. We don't often get new shop equipment. When we do, it's often difficult to configure Fabrication CAMduct software to work with it, or we need to pay for an expensive consultant. This lab is designed to take the fear out of machine setup in Fabrication CAMduct software by walking you through the process, including how to figure out what to do—as well as what to do when things don't go as planned. This session features Fabrication CAMduct.

When it comes to ITM content for Autodesk, Inc.’s, Fabrication software manufacturers and contractors, both struggle with creating and managing good ITM content. There are subscription-based or "managed" solutions on the market, but they are costly. This panel will discuss what good content consists of. It's more than just dimensional data—it's connection rules, pricing codes, labor units, and so on. In addition, the panel is going to discuss how the responsibility of creating content will be moving from contractors to manufacturers and wholesale distributors. This will lead to a free/open-source content database made up of manufacturer-provided ITMs. This panel is going to consist of industry-leading contractors, manufacturers, and wholesale distributors.

If you are new to Fabrication software, there's a lot of road between installing the software and deploying and implementing the product across an enterprise. How do you point all your users to the same database? How do you implement security so that not everybody can change your database? How do you upgrade a Fabrication software database to the next release? All these common questions have easy answers that are not easy to come by if you are a new user. This lab will walk you through taking the configuration that installs to deploying the software to all users in your company in a safe and effective manner.

Leeds Station Southern Entrance (LSSE) is a signature new gateway entrance to the existing station in Leeds, United Kingdom. Constructed over the existing river between 2 residential tower blocks, and supported from the existing station structure and Victorian masonry arched viaduct, the site constraints alone make this a challenging scheme. When combined with the multiple curves of the architectural form, it presents a unique set of engineering challenges. This class will be a case study covering how we’ve successfully used multiple Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools (including Rhino software, Grasshopper software, Robot Structural Analysis software, Revit software, and Navisworks software) to engineer a scheme that would be impossible without today's technology and to bring the existing and new build elements together seamlessly. We will discuss the project constraints, the workflows used, and some of the challenges we overcame in design and construction.

In August 2015, Arkansas Children's, Inc. announced plans to build a freestanding children's hospital in Springdale, Arkansas. The new building, Arkansas Children's Northwest, will include 235,000 square feet of inpatient beds, emergency care, diagnostic services and clinical space. The hospital's construction and facilities team assembled a detailed set of data specifications to streamline the handover of the building and jumpstart operations & maintenance. The goal was to have all equipment data populated in the CMMS (maintenance management system) by substantial completion in the fall of 2017, to allow for critical maintenance processes to be in place prior to completion. To realize that vision, TME led an initiative to drive the successful transition and handover of asset data before the end of the project. This presentation walks through the planning, design, and construction phases of the project as well as the beginning of operations.

Mark has 21 years of construction and engineering design experience. He has played a key role in the implementation of Autodesk BIM tools at Bernhard TME.Mark has shared his BIM knowledge at events such as Autodesk University, BIM Forum, ASHE, AHA, ASHRAE, FIATECH and numerous Revit User Groups.Mark got his start in the industry as a fire sprinkler designer. Mark has been leading the BIM Services Group at Bernhard TME. This group focuses on project delivery for the building lifecycle. Mark is also an adjunct Professor at Arizona State University and was involved with the development of the VLC Collaboration Space at Arizona State University and lectures on the subject of Building Startup and Commissioning using BIM tools.

This class will explain current methods of base plate and anchoring design in steel structures, and look at their limitations. Then it will introduce a new approach to designing and checking base plates and anchoring of any shape, loaded in any direction. It is based on a new method called component-based finite element model (CBFEM) and has been implemented into the new version of Hilti PROFIS. We'll demonstrate this new approach that lets structural engineers design base plates and anchoring more accurately and efficiently. We'll show various examples and verification studies. We'll also introduce a new workflow from Robot Structural Analysis Professional software via PROFIS into Revit software and Advanced Steel software.

MWH are a global engineering and construction management company who build some of the world’s largest wastewater treatment plants. MWH in conjunction with Autodesk Consulting have implemented an innovative method to embed the construction Inspection Test Plan (ITP) inside BIM 360 Field. This method makes ITP completion intuitive for the site manager and enables the off-site quality management team and project manager to monitor its progress. Zoe Robertson from MWH and Anthony Neal from Autodesk Consulting will demonstrate how an ITP that has been documented in MS Excel can be generated into Autodesk BIM 360 Field clearly showing the building elements that require inspection and what quality inspections need to be conducted. We will also demonstrate how the ITP process can be further streamlined by embedding it in the BIM model during design. We will also discuss the people aspects that need to be understood and considered when driving QA/QC completion on-site.

3ds Max software comes with Infrastructure Design Suite software, but are you capitalizing on it? The Civil View tool in 3ds Max software enables designers to add roadways, vehicles, trees, and signage to their civil projects. Learn the best practices for importing AutoCAD Civil 3D software drawings into 3ds Max software, as well as the optimal settings in AutoCAD Civil 3D software that will result in the most productive workflow. We will also discuss setting up cameras, lighting, and animation in 3ds Max software.

Utilizing the Frame Generator within Inventor Professional software, we will open a machine support structure to demonstrate an improved workflow for design. First we will suppress the machine model elements and then we’ll modify the frame to show how to improve timeliness of the analysis. Next we will perform a quick frame study within Inventor Professional software for the natural frequency and stress analysis. Then we will push the model directly to Robot Structural Analysis software to do some advanced analysis and loading. Finally, we will discuss optimization of the support structure. Throughout the presentation the discussion will focus on how to design a “stout” structure while not wasting time or material. This workflow will prove to be repeatable and efficient back at the office.

In this class, we will introduce Sensequake sensing-based structural analysis. We have developed advanced software and sensors to provide professional services and a turnkey solution to engineers and asset owners. Our patented technology performs structural health monitoring and seismic assessment solely based on actual data from highly sensitive vibration sensors—saving engineers time, effort, and money—all while providing superior results. This allows for the detection of hidden defects and undocumented structural modifications not detected by visual inspection and traditional engineering practices. In this class, we will explain how sensing technologies can be used for periodic and permanent structural-health monitoring. The assessments are based on very accurate sensing tests, without the need for a finite element (FE) analysis. In fact, our sensing results can be used to calibrate FE simulations build by Revit software, Robot Structural Analysis software, or other FE packages.
