Bills of materials (BOMs) serve several purposes throughout a product lifecycle. While BOM data is usually created by CAD designers and managed in product data management (PDM) systems such as Vault software, it also needs to be shared with departments outside engineering where BOM information is used for production planning, assembling, or purchasing. Each of these steps requires a different view of the same BOM. Product data is not exclusively used by development teams, but should also be available outside the engineering department. On the other hand, the engineers require data from upstream processes such as sales orders and specifications. And that's where a product lifecycle management (PLM) system like Fusion Lifecycle software comes into the play. Fusion Lifecycle serves as a company-wide information source for activities before, during, and after development actions, supported by automated processes. In this class, we will have a look at how both worlds (PDM and PLM) can be tied together to streamline the workflows throughout the whole product development cycle.

There are so many enterprise-level technologies and business tools in use. Which one is the right one to use? Doesn't ERP do everything? And I'm sure I heard that new CRM tools can do more than everything as well. But what about PDM and PLM, where do they fit? Do they fit? Aren't they the complicated tools used only in engineering? This class aims to lift the confusion around enterprise technologies, where and how they fit together, and how they can be used collaborativley to provide the right tools for the job.

Product lifecycle management (PLM) systems such as Autodesk Fusion 360 Manage software or Upchain run in the cloud while Vault software and most enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are still installed on-premises. Hidden behind firewalls, on-premises software cannot directly receive update notifications from cloud applications, and have difficulty synchronizing with changes from cloud systems. Polling data from large data sets is time consuming and inefficient. Automated synchronization and digital transformation of data between hybrid PDM, PLM, and ERP systems require more-sophisticated solutions. This class will demonstrate how to efficiently send data from cloud to on-premise systems. We’ll use different examples to demonstrate how the Autodesk Forge Webhooks API and Autodesk Fusion 360 Manage Action Scripts are used to automatically update entities in Vault software, or how cloud PLM systems automatically send Bill of Materials (BOM) data to on-premise ERP systems without the need for the on-premise software to poll for data.

The bill of materials (BOM) is at the heart of any manufacturing company, but each department (design, purchasing, production) and each system (PDM, ERP, MES, PLM) has its own view, understanding, and expectation of what the BOM should look like. Data is usually transferred manually from one system to another, which is time consuming and error prone. This session will explain where the BOM is created, how it moves between teams, how and why it is transformed, and what tool should do what to support this transition. We'll use practical examples to show how a BOM starts in Inventor and Vault software and moves between the above systems, and how these systems can be integrated with each other.
