Annotation of shop drawings in Fabrication CADmep software can be a time-consuming process, and if it is not done properly, it can have devastating results. This class will cover these struggles in detail, along with looking at solutions in the Fabrication CADmep 2016 software release. We will describe the best practices for getting shop drawings produced with the correct annotation sizes per viewport, as well as tips for moving text in a single viewport and NOT the others. We will also touch on best practices when using CTEXT—creating the block and report to go along with it—to ensure proper scaling within viewports. Fabrication CADmep 2016 software also has a new command for text placement location using LISP routines. We will show examples of each of these advanced tips and tricks, and we will have discussion time at the end.

Autodesk Inventor software can be used to save time, money, and scrap in manufacturing. Successfully manufacturing a product is not only about the final product, it also includes how you get there. In this class, we will show you how to use Inventor to work backwards to develop all the process steps of manufacturing a part. You first design the finished part you need, then use iParts and iLogic to engineer all the steps that are needed to get from a block of steel to a finished part. We will show you a workflow that takes advantage of the associative abilities of the "i" tools. As your finished product evolves, all of the production steps change as well. This workflow enables you to develop documentation for inspection, fabrication, work holding, fixturing, and machining 3D models of each progression. You can use stress analysis of parts in process to ensure that the process won't damage the final product. We will also offer tips and tricks that will help manufacturing engineers incorporate Inventor on the shop floor.

How should a design surface be expressed through panels? How can the architect ensure that a facade-design intent is honored all the way through to fabrication? Learn from Building Information Modeling (BIM)-oriented and computational strategies used by Safdie Architects in the context of Revit software and the Dynamo extension. Examples are chosen from the recently completed Marina Bay Sands in Singapore and Project Jewel at Changi Airport (now under construction). For design surfaces that are flat, simply curved, or optimized for myriad constraints, learn how to control panel families and types in Revit software using Dynamo. We will cover methods for laying out panels, managing edge conditions, and embedding panel elements with rich data for downstream consumption. We will share how we have used computational techniques in Revit software to cut out concerns for cost and risk to fabricators by providing well-studied, straightforward design documentation. The workflow begins in Revit where a building will be prepared for export to Inventor. The prepared view will then be opened in Inventor where it will be populated with true-to-life and actual manufacturable detail. Tools such as the frame generator and sheet metal parts can be used to achieve this. The model will then be wrapped up and published back to the original Revit model via the BIM exchange. COBis parameters may also be added during this process adhering to BIM Level 2 compliancy.

U.S.-style reinforced concrete design is a unique workflow that currently has no direct support in Revit software. In the class you will learn how you can accomplish a full U.S.-style concrete design workflow without leaving the Revit environment. Learn how you can capitalize on analysis information and Autodesk’s Code Checking Framework to drive calculation of required reinforcing per ACI 318. Harness new technologies to drive schedule-based design of reinforced concrete members according to a layout schema that you can customize to your own company standards.

This class will enable you to better understand how this technology, and the technology behind the Autodesk Fabrication products, can help contractors develop holistic knowledge around the portfolio to improve their business practices, increase productivity, and save money.

This class will cover the use of Revit Structure software as a reinforcement detailing platform. We will examine the various reinforcement tools available in Revit software, including rebar extensions, area reinforcement, path reinforcement, 3D rebar, assemblies, and a few add-in programs. We will also touch on some best practices, workarounds, shortcuts, limitations, and advantages. We will show you several examples of actual projects where Revit software reinforcement has been used, and share the models themselves, methods employed for presenting quantities, and placement drawings.

A repeat of a well-received Autodesk University 2017 class, this class will cover how to create concrete lift drawings in Revit software. We will cover the people who need to be engaged; the processes (from developing an estimate to providing field layout data); and the final product of quality-lift drawings that add value for the entire project team. Attendees will learn how the concrete Revit model can become the hub for the whole concrete team and second-tier subs, and how it can also greatly enhance communication with the design team and the general contractor. This class will discuss the technical aspects of creating and maintaining a construction-level concrete model, including families, parts, and the use of pour-sequence parameters. We will demonstrate what information is important to concrete field crews, and how to effectively communicate that through Revit software-based lift drawings. Attendees will also learn how to use geometry in Revit to create point data, and then how to use that point data downstream in the layout process.

This class will present a Revit software plug-in developed collaboratively by Stanford University and Autodesk, Inc., that enables architects and engineers to receive real-time feedback on the installed cost, lead time, and environmental impact of steel structural design options. The estimates are based on current data provided by members of the structural steel supply chain, including mills, fabricators, and erectors. The IP required to produce the estimate is stored and maintained by each party in a secure online database; information authorized for release to the designer is accessed by the Revit plug-in via web services and visualized in the context of the Building Information Modeling (BIM). We will share 2 industry case-study applications of the technology in collaboration with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM); Rutherford + Chekene; and Herrick. We will discuss the business benefits and process changes required to on-board the technology for design engineers, fabricators, and erectors, and we will cover future plans for the development of the technology.

This session will cover how SSOE Group has changed its delivery process on retrofit projects to reduce waste in the engineering and construction process as a standard of care for its clients. The key point of this entire process is reliance on the laser scan and all team members working with the data in ReCap software, Navisworks software, and the modeling platform (Revit software, AutoCAD Plant 3D software, AutoCAD Civil 3D software, or AutoCAD software). This presentation will explore the process and workflow of a BIM Coordinator before, during, and after construction. Our team’s established methods not only help construction teams with issues before they ever happen on the jobsite, but for everyone involved with the life of the project. Learn how to utilize BIM coordination to its fullest while we explain the processes used with BIM 360 Glue, Revit, AutoCAD, Dynamo, and more. In order to meet construction demand, the industry needs more people devoted to technology. How do you become the person in your company who challenges processes, researches new tools, and pushes innovation? Perspectives provided by an industry association, a trade contractor, and a union training center are working together to address this issue.

Engineers will be interested in the conversion of an MEP mechanical room with numerous pump connections to a construction-ready model. Installers will be interested in our 3D Fab map with identified pieces and indication of the field connections. The mechanical room will be divided in several sections, to optimise fabrication in the workshop. Cut length sheets and bill of materials will be generated, allowing for spool labeling per zone to minimise material handling and increase job-site efficiency. All this will be realised using Revit, ReCap Pro (retrofit jobs and job-site scanning), Revizto (issue tracking and virtual reality) and the Victaulic Tools For Revit. This session will be presented in an interactive way by combining presentations and movies with live demonstrations.

Have you ever found yourself working on an architecture, engineering, and construction project with incomplete information about the existing conditions around which you will install new work? In this class, we will explore laser-scanning reality capture workflows that bring honest and accurate measurements to the drafting and coordination tables. This class will focus on needs for implementing laser scanning on your jobsite. We will look at the setup, challenges, and time requirements of using laser scanners on jobsites. Then we will look at postprocessing techniques where raw data is transformed into a coherent point cloud. Next, we will explore the combination point cloud / photo collection product via ReCap software. Last, we will see how to pull the point cloud into design software like Revit software and AutoCAD software for modeling purposes, and how to overlay the point cloud onto 3D models of building elements through Navisworks software and ReCap software (we will review the ReCap software capability to represent models within the photosphere view).

Dynamo is great for inputting information, linking parameters together, and performing calculations. However, Dynamo can also be a great tool for tracking the information and components in intelligent models. For example, with large projects, there can be hundreds of spaces with thousands of components. Revit software can track this information in schedules, but only to a certain extent. With Dynamo, you can track the information and ensure that it’s correct. You can also write the data to Microsoft Excel or use custom packages to visualize the data in various ways. You can use Dynamo to extract information from architectural models, or check for model conditions when beginning a design. Then, you can track information in the MEP model as the design progresses. You can simply visualize this data, or you can compare it to other information for quality assurance. With Dynamo, all the information in a model is available to you.

Should you consider adding this tool to your workflow? While there are some very powerful laser scanners that are accurate and fast for larger spaces, and photogrammetry that is cost-effective but not as accurate, there is a growing number of more-affordable handheld scanners that can be capitalized on to augment the as-built conditions, and in some cases they are more effective the other alternatives. We will discuss the current and forthcoming technology that may augment current scanning methods. This class will address the following questions: What is a reasonable expectation from a handheld scanner and return on investment? What is the workflow for maximizing the scanner’s use for as-built and quality assurance / quality control uses? How can we best capitalize on scanning at this scale? When is the right time to consider handheld versus other scanning technology? Where can this scanning method be most effective? This session features ReCap and Navisworks Manage.

This session will demonstrate the Greenlee Bendworks add-in for Revit software. We’ll explore how the add-in enables prefabrication of conduits using Greenlee benders, and saves time on the documentation of prefabrication documents and conduit coupling placement. Learn to take your conceptual designs beyond the marketing image through to fabrication. This class describes the solution that we implemented for one of our clients recently where we took an Autodesk Revit conceptual mass to fabrication using Autodesk® Inventor® software. The class will demonstrate the workflow developed to take us from the design brief (a marketing image and five sections), into the conceptual massing environment in Revit software. Here we defined, panelized, and optimized the façade design before coordinating with the proposed steelwork design. This coordinated design was then taken into Inventor to create the fabrication detail necessary for automated fabrication and delivery to site. The final stage of this workflow saw the panels transferred back into Revit to coordinate and design the final supporting bracketry. This class showcases the workflow from Revit to Inventor and back again and highlights the benefits of adaptive components and massing tools to realize your designs.

Learn advanced skills capitalizing on the new Fabrication functionality in Revit 2017 software. Using Revit schedules, assemblies, tags, views, interference checking, and new features in Revit 2017 software, we can produce fabrication documentation inside of the Revit software interface, which enables us to be fully coordinated with design consultants. While Fabrication Parts was introduced in 2016, it was in Revit 2017 software that they became fully functional while remaining in a single interface. We’ll cover how to model using Fabrication Parts; how to convert the design model into Fabrication Parts; how to use assembly views to create spools sheets and details; how to annotate Fabrication Parts in plan view and 3D; how to coordinate with other consultants in Revit software; how new Revit 2017 software features relate to Fabrication Parts; and how to import existing as-built conditions from Fabrication CADmep software into a new renovation project.
