Join us for a journey through the convergence of hybrid manufacturing and architecture. In this talk, 2 European partners—Fosters and Partners, an architectural design company based in London, and Concrenetics who blend art with urban needs to create architectural installations—will cover how architects are using large-scale hybrid manufacturing to introduce modern manufacturing processes to create cost-effective complex parts that are also environmentally friendly.

You don't often take an additive part directly from print bed to installation. Tolerance requirements almost always dictate the need for subtractive postmachining to ensure surfaces meet design specs and tolerances. In this class, we'll take a generativity-designed part from design to preparation for hybrid manufacturing. Along the way, we'll explore optimization with generative design, design for manufacturing, and work-holding design, and we'll see how the mechanical design tools, FEA capabilities, and hybrid manufacturing environment in Fusion 360 software can reduce friction and streamline the process from design to manufactured part.

In this talk, we’ll explore the application of hybrid manufacturing to injection mold tools for both modification and repair, demonstrating a circular economy where tools can be modular, reusable, and rapidly modified. Hybrid manufacturing uses machine tools that combine additive and subtractive operations, and provide particular value to the modification and life extension of mold tools. We'll demonstrate a workflow using Autodesk software to (a) identify unwanted features or damage on a mold, (b) capture physical geometric data, (c) program processes to remove and repair features and damage, (d) redeposit material, and (e) machine new features. We'll demonstrate both the digital and physical aspects of the workflow, and aim to present the final physical output—a brand-new injection-molded component, made in the Autodesk Moldflow Laboratory in Kilsyth, Australia. This project is a collaboration between the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Autodesk.

New manufacturing processes and hardware are changing the way products are designed and made. This class will focus on how companies can use innovative DED (directed energy deposition) additive processes in their businesses to respond faster, produce more efficiently, and produce parts they couldn't have through traditional manufacturing techniques. We'll be focusing primarily on PowerMill 2019 software's support for additive/hybrid manufacturing processes, and the Diversified Machine Systems (DMS) Hybrid Machining Center that combines 5-axis additive and 5-axis subtractive machining. You'll learn which industries have lead the way in adopting these technologies and how they've implemented them, which applications in your shop could benefit from DED hybrid technology, how to most effectively plan for hybrid processes, and how to best utilize the new Additive tools in PowerMill.

Modern manufacturing technology has given designers a large selection of possible avenues for the manufacturing of a component. However, with this variety, it’s difficult to know which method would provide the most-sustainable results. By maximizing manufacturing sustainability metrics, in this session, we’ll showcase how Autodesk Fusion 360 users can select a manufacturing workflow to ensure a reduced impact for their manufactured component. Focusing on additive, subtractive, and hybrid manufacturing workflows, our case study will highlight how to use manufacturing energy consumption and waste metrics to select the most sustainable manufacturing method for designs. Furthermore, this session will dive into ongoing research on how these decisions can be made within the design phase of product development, through maximizing predictive manufacturing energy and waste models.

In this class, we’ll cover four topics of automotive manufacturing: mold simulation and CAM, factory planning, automated manufacturing, and emerging design and manufacturing technology. We’ll begin with the challenges that automotive tooling companies face, and how the use of new technology and increased machine utilization can address the needs of more-complex and accurate tooling. From there we’ll move to factory planning and ways in which to address the challenges that drive change in manufacturing facilities; the problems that arise because of change; and the use of a unified digital model to manage this. We’ll then look at how manufacturing productivity can be increased using intelligent automation, and how it can improve consistency and component reliability. And we’ll finish discussing the use of emerging technology like generative design and additive and hybrid manufacturing, as manufacturers look to improve performance and efficiency of vehicles to meet sustainability and regulatory requirements.

With the release of Inventor 2023 software, users can now send their CAD data directly from Inventor to Autodesk Fusion 360 software. This opens a host of new capabilities for Inventor users in generative design, simulation, and subtractive and additive manufacturing. This presentation will demonstrate, through compelling customer case studies, how Inventor users can now take advantage of this workflow to explore the benefits of using metal additive manufacturing to manufacture their products. Metal additive and hybrid manufacturing can offer tangible advantages in product performance due to the design freedoms the process enables, manufacturing sustainability, supply lead time, and component cost. In addition, the advances in accessible hardware and software is making this technology feasible for nearly all industrial sectors. In this cross-industry collaboration between Northumbrian Water Group (NWG) and the Autodesk Technology Centre in Birmingham, England, we're solving the challenges NWG has maintaining water infrastructure. By employing advanced manufacturing techniques—such as laser scanning, reverse engineering, and hybrid manufacturing—NWG can work with its supply chain to repair broken parts and extend the operating lives of the assets they maintain. NWG is responsible for many assets that were manufactured decades ago, and the original design data is no longer available, causing excessively long lead times for replacement parts. As a result, the downtime for key national infrastructure water systems is prolonged and costly. We will show how this important collaboration between the water and manufacturing industries will reduce the downtime and extend product life, improving NWG's resilience, and ultimately saving money for customers.

As workpieces become more complex with the need to bring them to market at a faster rate, hybrid multitasking machines help manufacturers deliver quality products in less time. This session will briefly touch on the history of multitasking, and how it paved the way to hybrid multitasking. We will also discuss the hybrid machine platforms and the technology each offers, along with examples.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is bringing new innovations to traditional methods of manufacturing. AM is now being used to manufacture composite tooling, saving composite manufacturers cost and lead time over traditional tooling methods and materials. Composite tooling is typically an expensive process, due to the materials required to survive the various manufacturing processes involved. Tooling is exposed to excessive temperatures, pressures, and forces, causing tools to be unusable after a period of time. Manufacturing problems like warpage can render an expensive tool useless. This course will inform composite manufacturers about which AM methods, materials, and optimization techniques can be used to substitute traditional tooling. It will also cover the various composite manufacturing methods that can take advantage of additive tooling, and how to verify that the tooling will be appropriate for the design manufacturing process.

A hybrid cloud is a cloud-computing environment that uses a mix of applications on different infrastructures relying on orchestrated integration between the platforms. The infrastructures can be on-premise services; private cloud services; and third-party, public cloud services. This a legitimate option even if all the components are not pure cloud. Our Fusion Lifecycle implementations are typically hybrid cloud; we use Vault data management software (deployed as either on premise or private cloud) and Fusion Lifecycle software (pure cloud). These environments come with their own challenges. In this class, we'll discuss these challenges and provide recommendations on how to optimize these heterogeneous environments.

Hear the story of how Cascadia Structural Timber Solutions went from being a small hand fabrication and truss manufacturer to a fast-growing glulam fabricator, looking to lead the way in new mass timber buildings using Informed Design in Inventor software. The mass timber industry is on the rise, and with it comes unique challenges on the jobsite. As many projects move to a hybrid of steel and wood, we need to be able to provide products that can be easily used and understood early in the design process. With Informed Design we can predefine structural members—from columns to beams to preassembled trusses—that can be added at the beginning of the design process. We can provide flexibility for our customers by giving them specific parameters they can change while still allowing the design to be easy to manufacture. With our push to implement lean manufacturing principles, these designs allow us to scale our business and increase profitability while providing a great experience for our customers.

Design advancements are exciting and offer solutions previously unthought-of to complex problems. But we can’t forget the manufacturing processes needed to fabricate and eventually implement that new and optimized design. This class will focus on the emerging Generative Design technology in Fusion 360, and multiple ways to manufacture those designs, capitalizing on additive manufacturing, subtractive manufacturing, and a combination of both. The goal will be to explore design and manufacturing workflows to bring this emerging technology into the fold for potential users with varying levels of manufacturing capability. This class will address the workflow from initial generation to final part, focusing on the best practices found along the way.

This class will describe the workflows that Optomec uses to translate CAD designs into printed features on existing parts or surfaces. We will cover specific additive-manufacturing challenges that are related to Aerosol Jet printing and how we have used Autodesk, Inc., packages to address our needs. We will further explore the subtle differences between additive and subtractive manufacturing and how Autodesk has worked to address the philosophical differences in an easy-to-understand way. Attendees will develop a deeper knowledge of the use of Autodesk products for additive manufacturing and how they can be adapted to suit their specific additive requirements. Attendees will also learn about the differences between additive and subtractive methodologies and how they apply to CAD and CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) development as a whole. Generative Design opens up new solution spaces because there is more than one way to solve problems. Fusion software’s powerful CAM tools have been extended by additive manufacturing (AM) capabilities to enable workflows directly from design to additive, subtractive, or hybrid production of parts. This class will show an example workflow to apply subtractive preparations, add support structures, and calculate the toolpath for an Aconity Metal AM machine with a generatively designed model—all inside Fusion software. Metal AM processes produce parts of limited surface quality that need subtractive postprocessing. Putting data in the center allows for exploring design options, adding offsets/stock for milling, and calculating laser paths in the same software.

Product lifecycle management (PLM) systems such as Autodesk Fusion 360 Manage software or Upchain run in the cloud while Vault software and most enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are still installed on-premises. Hidden behind firewalls, on-premises software cannot directly receive update notifications from cloud applications, and have difficulty synchronizing with changes from cloud systems. Polling data from large data sets is time consuming and inefficient. Automated synchronization and digital transformation of data between hybrid PDM, PLM, and ERP systems require more-sophisticated solutions. This class will demonstrate how to efficiently send data from cloud to on-premise systems. We’ll use different examples to demonstrate how the Autodesk Forge Webhooks API and Autodesk Fusion 360 Manage Action Scripts are used to automatically update entities in Vault software, or how cloud PLM systems automatically send Bill of Materials (BOM) data to on-premise ERP systems without the need for the on-premise software to poll for data.
