This is an introduction to hackathons and how we can use them successfully to drive innovation and team performance in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) environment. We will talk about the origins of hackathons, how they have been driving innovation in the tech industry, and why companies of all types have been embracing this process. We will talk briefly about the growing trend of holding hackathons in the AEC industry and how NBBJ specifically has adapted this process to drive innovation within the Design Computation Group. This includes a brief demonstration of past outcomes as well as a discussion of how hackathon projects can take on lives of their own long after the event has concluded. We will also discuss marketing opportunities, as well as and the cultural benefits of hackathons that have intangible positive effects on the organization.

Much of the early work around generative design at Autodesk was focused on manufactured products. Increasingly, though, it is being applied to design problems in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). Autodesk Research—mainly through its New York-based architectural studio, The Living—is exploring how one can use generative design to solve a variety of problems in the AEC space. Recent examples include Project Discover, where survey data from Autodesk's Toronto-based employees was used to help choose the layout for our new office in the MaRS Discovery District. Generative design was also used in the design of the Autodesk University 2017 exhibit hall. During this session we'll take a look at the tools available from Autodesk to apply generative design in the AEC industry. And we'll show how to get started with generative design by driving Dynamo with Refinery, Autodesk's new optimization engine.

Leading this shift, Autodesk offers a comprehensive suite of APIs and services, unlocking new ways to connect workflows with data. This class, aimed at intermediate-level users, dives into Dynamo software's connectors and the new AEC Data Model API, facilitating seamless integration of cloud-based functionalities. We start with an overview of the AEC Data Model nodes and GraphQL nodes, enabling navigation to Autodesk hubs, projects, and data sources. Attendees will learn how to connect Dynamo graphs with cloud data and efficiently unpack and filter data using a variety of nodes. The AEC Data Model API enables access to data that is more detailed than anticipated, significantly enhancing possibilities for data verification and data management. In our session, we will present several case studies on data verification using the AEC Data Model APIwith Excel and Power BI, as well as data management using the AEC Data Model API and the Revit API. Additionally, data verification is also possible with the Data Exchange API,and we will briefly explain the differences between the Data Exchange API and the AEC Data Model API.

One Team leads the development of the Digital Building Logbook (DBL) in the context of Horizon Europe's BuildON project. Serving as a centralized repository, it aids the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry's journey toward climate neutrality and a more circular economy. The DBL captures diverse building data, from general details, administrative records, construction data, and energy performance metrics to operational information and smart building data—collected throughout the building's lifespan. This effort aims to streamline the organization of diverse data types and address challenges related to disconnected data. Using the AEC Data Model API, the DBL will enable efficient data queries and powerful search capabilities to extract rich data from models without the need of authoring tools, effectively mitigating disconnected data issues common in the AEC industry. The DBL enhances user experience by breaking down data for various user personas across the building's lifecycle.
