Since the U.K. government Level 2 Building Information Modeling (BIM) mandate, BDP has actively pursued greater BIM adoption centered on Autodesk, Inc., software and the emerging British Standards. In autumn of 2014 BDP became the first U.K. business to achieve BIM Level 2 certification. This class will reveal workflows that BDP adopted in a multidisciplinary approach to address this mandate, enabled by the use of BIM technologies. In a critical analysis of a £330 million project, we will divulge the BDP BIM toolbox from inception to construction (with a tested strategy for facilities management), highlighting how the process has evolved over the past decade, as well as showing proven efficiencies and further development priorities to deliver a better product for our clients.

Automated plan review that is integrated into Building Information Modeling (BIM) can ease the pain of achieving compliance with building codes. It also can have a big impact on an architect's bottom line, an enormous impact on your client's bottom line through expediting the permit and commissioning processes, and it can even impact city revenue by accelerating property and sales tax receipts. In this presentation, you will see an innovative process designed for using Revit software with software for automated plan review. After adding building code information to the BIM model, the add-in acts as a client to send data to a cloud service that assesses whether the building complies with particular sections of the International Building Code. Results are displayed as annotations of the BIM model, enabling quick alteration to achieve compliance. A plan-review report aids authorities in assuring that the building is ready for a permit. The Grand Paris Express (GPE) is a major infrastructure in Paris, with 200 kilometers of tunnel line and 65 stations in a future-automated project. At Autodesk University 2 years ago, we presented Systra’s first Building Information Modeling (BIM) initiative on the project. During this session, we will show you the evolution of our own practice together with the evolution of the BIM requirements of the GPE client. For example, we will describe the impact of the BIM requirements on our design (structure, architecture, and MEP modeling), and the evolution of BIM uses, such as the development of the 3D model of the entire project at the city level. This global 3D model integrating the Station Revit software models will be used for communication purposes for all project stakeholders, such as city representative, local bodies, or future users. Thanks to the network’s adoption of BIM at different stages of the project, the interactions between the different stakeholders were matured, empowering them for future projects. What are the elements to consider when comparing bids side by side that enable general contractors to identify the best subcontractor to work with? Join Angela Santurbano (lead product manager) and Cooper Jobling (customer success manager) as they talk about the best ways to compare bids in an apples-to-apples fashion, while maintaining all project information front and center. They’ll also help you identify the best subcontractor to work with even if that subcontractor has submitted a proposal that’s higher than their competitors’ proposals.

This class is for individuals involved in design and construction seeking to use BIM coordination clash data. The workflow presented aims to facilitate instant clash metrics reporting and make model data meaningful and accessible for various project stakeholders using Navisworks software and Microsoft Power BI. We will focus on various elements in the workflow that include general clash test setup in Clash Detective, managing clash status and flow of changes throughout the coordination process, and exporting Clash Detective data with a custom plug-in using Navisworks API. Then, we will demonstrate how to use the exported data to visualize custom clash metrics in Microsoft Power BI and its effectiveness in strategizing BIM coordination and communication.

Most people in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry know how to use levels of detail (LODs) but what about managing the level of commitment a project is going to require? Sometimes a project is really simple but would benefit greatly from a short coordination effort. Others require a large effort over the course of several weeks and need more from everybody involved. This session will focus on strategies to help manage all project stakeholders’ expectations, from design through construction, along with ideas for communicating the level of commitment your project will require.

This session will focus on how to encourage the use of the model in low-adoption sectors and get the most out of the models during preconstruction. Andy Gajbhiye and Daniel Olivares from Joeris General Contractors will cover how you can use models during preconstruction in low-adoption sectors, or when the BIM (Building Information Modeling) process is not required. We will share best practices for quickly conditioning models, performing takeoff, comparing versions, monitoring design progress, and collaborating with Assemble Insight software to greatly improve preconstruction workflows and gain a competitive edge in a competitive market. The team will also focus on the route to developing an implementation strategy and bringing a change in mindset for using models effectively.

"Stephen Hamil will present how project teams can collaborate to develop information on a BIM project. The class will initially look at setting up an execution plan to give clarity on which team members are delivering what information and when. The core part of the class will then look at how Autodesk Forge can be used as the platform to develop a collaborative cloud based solution to allow models and associated information to be viewed through the web-browser.

NBS, based in the UK, are an Autodesk Solutions Associate and members of the Autodesk Developers Network. Stephen will give examples of the solutions that have been developed to make existing desktop applications 'cloud-connected' and also demonstrate new solutions that have been developed using Autodesk Forge to make what was previously impossible possible.Real-life customer example projects will be provided that focus on the benefits that construction professionals can unlock for both their own practice and their clients."

This course will present a novel framework and development works for enhancing building asset management, particularly operations and maintenance (O&M), by visually intuitive integration among Building Information Modeling (BIM), asset management (AM), and various electronics systems. A newly developed BIM-AM system provides an intuitive way to access heterogeneous O&M information of assets such as photos, attributes, equipment relationships, manuals, drawings, maintenance records, live views of closed circuit television (CCTV) systems, real-time sensing data from building management systems (BMS) and wireless ad-hoc sensors, as well as location information from a real-time location system (RTLS) in an integrated mobile platform. All of this information is accessible simply by asset repository, the maneuvering throughout a BIM model, or even a handheld radio frequency identification (RFID) scanning tool. The results have successfully demonstrated the use of BIM in O&M workflow, responsive incident handling, and enhancing building sustainability.
