Success Story

The City of Monash is a local government area Southeast of Melbourne, comprising a population of over 200,000 residents. Within its boundaries is a vibrant mix of residential, commercial, industry, as well as the main campus for Monash University. Natural wetlands and rivers also traverse through the council, providing unique challenges with respect to the natural and built environment. The Council undertook an internal design and construction project to upgrade pedestrian access through a steep parkland area, that presented challenges with respect to land topography and overland flood routes.
The project scope required a thoroughfare that was compliant to DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) requirements, had to suit the natural landscape, and provide as minimal impact as possible on the natural environment. This environment included a lot of trees, as well as a natural water creek and spring, as well as residential housing. On top of the thoroughfare, a rejuvenation of the local area was required to provide space for additional public parkland and picnic areas.
The design was completed using predominantly Autodesk Civil 3D, in addition to the Civil Site Design package. This provided a robust method to blend the new pedestrian path with the naturally steep landscape, and also incorporate water management features such as a pipe culvert and a gabion weir. The 3D model viewing tool was used extensively to provide a live visual representation of the complex geometry of the area, as well as incorporate the tricky DDA requirements around vertical grading, ramp landing areas and curve radii. In total, there were 10 concept designs and revisions, with minimal rework required due to the intuitive nature of the 3D model that was produced. The outputs from Civil 3D were then used for multiple public consultation sessions, with the feedback from the public being incredibly positive.
With the support of the entire team at Civil Survey Solutions, and the Autodesk solutions provided, the City of Monash was able to efficiently design a pedestrian path and associated public parkland areas in an area of incredibly complex geometry and natural features. The 3D modelling tools and visualisations that are available allowed the designers to fit a DDA compliant pedestrian path which will benefit the local community and provide safe access for decades to come.
The ability to visualise the local landscape and geometry through the design process was imperative for this project. Autodesk software provided the perfect environment to generate an intuitive 3D model incorporating all the elements of the pedestrian path, local parklands, and waterways. Without the features of Civil 3D and Civil Site Design, the outcomes of this project would not have been possible given the complexity and constraints of the environment.

Lanigan Civil – Touching Down using the Autodesk AEC Collection
Geoff Lanigan (Lanigan Civil) explained some of the challenges of this design work. “Most of Australia’s regional airports are maintained by Local Councils – Scone, Shell Harbour, Newcastle, Broome, Hobart, Launceston, Coffs Harbour airports, etc. The Councils are very budget conscious and demanding the most cost-effective design solution.”
Barker Ryan Stewart Delivers Major Projects with BIM Coordination
Barker Ryan Stewart is a dynamic engineering consultancy located in Sydney, delivering subdivision, commercial and industrial civil engineering projects. Barker Ryan Stewart switched from AutoCAD LT to using Civil 3D over 10 years ago to improve efficiencies and project coordination. Now, a multi-disciplinary, multimillion-dollar government project required design for major sections of a road network, with multiple intersections and coordinating with other designers. BIM modelling was mandated.
A small firm leveraged on Autodesk Civil 3D to go big!
Optima Consulting Engineers are a small Sydney-based engineering consultancy, delivering structural, as well as civil and drainage projects. They undertook a design project for a car storage and vehicle processing facility for 20,000 vehicles in Southern Sydney. The 60ha site was in a flood-prone area, with a requirement to grade the area to withstand a 100yr flood event, with no impacts on any neighboring properties. In addition, there were numerous building structures and bridges which also required design and drafting as part of the project. This required significant Autodesk Civil 3D modelling as well as flood studies to be able to meet all project requirements and deadlines.
