Optima Consulting Engineers are a small Sydney-based engineering consultancy, delivering structural, as well as civil and drainage projects. They undertook a design project for a car storage and vehicle processing facility for 20,000 vehicles in Southern Sydney. The 60ha site was in a flood-prone area, with a requirement to grade the area to withstand a 100yr flood event, with no impacts on any neighboring properties. In addition, there were numerous building structures and bridges which also required design and drafting as part of the project. This required significant Autodesk Civil 3D modelling as well as flood studies to be able to meet all project requirements and deadlines.
There were numerous goals associated with this project, of which Autodesk provided a robust solution. This included an intuitive and rapid model generation to meet tight time constraints. Next would be able to minimize rework and seamless integration between multiple systems and software. Lastly, upskilling in civil and drainage design software, which was done through the Civil Survey Solutions technical team.
Working closely with Civil Survey Solutions, Optima adopted a solution built on Autodesk Civil 3D and Autodesk AutoCAD. Large re-grading work was required for the project, with an optimal solution modelled in Civil 3D which required 24,000 cu.m of cut and 1,070,000 cu.m of fill. On top of that, there was an innovative open drainage channel designed for the perimeters of the facility, with three onsite detention ponds capable of storing up to 76,000L of water. In total, the land was raised by up to 3m to protect the site from up to 100year floods.
With the support of the team at Civil Survey Solutions, Optima was able to harness the power of Autodesk Civil 3D to accurately model the grading and drainage requirements of the site. The project was delivered on time to an accelerated timeframe. Post construction, it was found that the estimates of earthwork requirements modelled were incredibly accurate. Optima has been able to leverage the skills and knowledge learnt about the Autodesk collection of software from this project, to further grow the business.
Optima Consulting Engineers undertook a large project, and leveraged the expertise of the team at Civil Survey Solutions, combined with the products of Autodesk, to deliver their largest project to date.
