Lanigan Civil – Touching Down using the Autodesk AEC Collection

Lanigan Civil – Touching Down using the Autodesk AEC Collection

Customer challenge

Geoff Lanigan (Lanigan Civil) explained some of the challenges of this design work. “Most of Australia’s regional airports are maintained by Local Councils – Scone, Shell Harbour, Newcastle, Broome, Hobart, Launceston, Coffs Harbour airports, etc. The Councils are very budget conscious and demanding the most cost-effective design solution.”

Project goals

In a recent project for at Scone Airport in NSW, Autodesk Civil 3D was utilised to optimise the design of upgrading the runways, taxiways, apron and a new museum within a limited developable area. The airport had flood issues and the whole design had to be carried out in conjunction with a flood study which utilised the Civil 3D surfaces and made interaction between the geometric design and flood constraints a breeze.

Solution

Geoff Lanigan is convinced that Autodesk provides the answer to the company’s civil design needs. “Having used a number of civil engineering programs during my career – they have all suffered from being separate from the drafting program – you typically have to export the civil design into the drafting or CAD program to complete the project. Should there be a change to the design, then the drafting has to be re-done. Civil 3D provides both civil engineering tools inside the CAD environment."

Business outcome

By combining years of industry experience and modern civil design tools, Lanigan Civil have been able to deliver many design projects for Australia’s regional airports. “Training staff is always an issue for business owners – the good news is that everyone has AutoCAD skills, so with this under their belt, it is not too hard a step for staff to become familiar with Civil 3D. The modern interface and model-based design puts it well ahead of the competition”.

Conclusion

“Lanigan Civil is typical of the shift by civil engineering companies from using older generations of civil engineering software to the modern approach of integrating design and drafting using Civil 3D” notes Andrew English, Director of Civil Survey Solutions – who provides Autodesk software to civil engineering consultancies and local government through out Australia. “These organisations have set themselves up for the next ten to fifteen years of high productivity and low training costs.”

Barker Ryan Stewart Delivers Major Projects with BIM Coordination

Barker Ryan Stewart is a dynamic engineering consultancy located in Sydney, delivering subdivision, commercial and industrial civil engineering projects. Barker Ryan Stewart switched from AutoCAD LT to using Civil 3D over 10 years ago to improve efficiencies and project coordination. Now, a multi-disciplinary, multimillion-dollar government project required design for major sections of a road network, with multiple intersections and coordinating with other designers. BIM modelling was mandated.

A small firm leveraged on Autodesk Civil 3D to go big!

Optima Consulting Engineers are a small Sydney-based engineering consultancy, delivering structural, as well as civil and drainage projects. They undertook a design project for a car storage and vehicle processing facility for 20,000 vehicles in Southern Sydney. The 60ha site was in a flood-prone area, with a requirement to grade the area to withstand a 100yr flood event, with no impacts on any neighboring properties. In addition, there were numerous building structures and bridges which also required design and drafting as part of the project. This required significant Autodesk Civil 3D modelling as well as flood studies to be able to meet all project requirements and deadlines.
